Default SS won't let me choose my heir

This is the situation: my Byzantine Emperor is 90 years old. His heir, Anastasios, is 54 and has an underage boy. I prepared everything in order to get his cousin as the next heir, but somehow the game chooses another random adopted guy. I know that the game chooses the next heir by his authority if the current heir has no sons. I cheated Anastasios' cousin so that he has a total of 9 points of authority. I quicksave the game, end my turn, the Emperor dies of old age and that random guy gets co-emperor. I looked at his authority and guess was? -1. This shouldn't be happening, should it? I've never had a problem with this neither in Vanilla nor in SS. Is this a kind of glitch? Is there something that I can do in order to fix this (and no, I can't wait for the random guy to die because he is 23 and I would not want to kill him)?

PS: I looked at the family tree and it seems that this random guy is great-great-grandson of Emperor Ioannis II (the heir of the start of the game). The cousin I want to have as heir is grandson of Ioannes' son, Emperor Efarestos.

It happens sometimes, not really sure why. What you can do is kill the 23 year old. All you have to do is get him to attack a small unit of rebels and go to battlemap, then just dont let your general attack the enemy back and he will die eventually

Use Amaranth's Next Heir Ancillary submod. It adds an ancillary that you give to the heir to the heir. I don't know if it is save game compatible, but I don't see why it wouldn't be. I'm not sure why the guy with negative authority was made heir in your game, but I think I read somewhere that negative authority is sometimes glitchy. Plus, I know that the game likes to pick the leftmost male available (on the family tree) if left to its own devices.

I'm 240+ turns/years into my Portugal AAR, and Amaranth's ancillary has not once failed me. The only trick is that you need to think ahead far enough to get it to the next guy in line before either the leader or current heir dies.

Thanks for the answers! I killed the random guy and I still didn't get the one I wanted, but his bastard brother. Anyway, he is my greatest general so it's ok. rep to both of you

Do what TheBArd told you to do. That mod is great. makes things so much easier. And thanks to it i now know that you can pass on Ancillary from character to character.

I will download it when I finish the campaign. It is not save game compatible (spelling ok?)

Also you must start a new campaign after you install NHA. It won't work with your old saved games.

NHA for 6.4 is. I tossed ancillaries around mid-campaign plenty of times - and export_descr_ancillaries.txt is what is affected by NHA.
Removing it mid-campaign... THAT would be ugly and most likely not savegame compatible. If you manage to crash your game by enabling it mid-campaign send me the system.log and I gladly accept that I am in the wrong

To clarify: Old versions of this mod made changes to descr_strat.txt. Such changes are not savegame compatible. However:
26.08.10: Triggers are fixed and shortened, mod is no longer depend on descr_strat.txt file. (Thanks Meneth for his help about that). Just replace the older descr_strat file with your back-up file, or re-run ss_setup.exe again, it should replace it to original.

Changes to the EDA file are save game compatible. The game will detect the new ancillary and its relevant trigger in mid-campaign however say if a guy already has an anc in mid-game and one removes it then the saved game is totaled.
    Just like bane said.
