Ex Cineribus - "From the Ashes": A Roman NTW Modification
Seeing as there are many Roman mods coming up around here lately, I decided to try a stab myself. I have planned this mod since Empire: Total War and it was only recently when I realized I could actually make such a mod. Besides, after all, there is no copywright on the Romans.
The storyline:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
In 1797, Napoleon invaded Italy and established a series of puppet states such as the Cisalpine Republic around Milan. After Napoleon left for glory in Egypt, Russian general Aleksander Suvorov launched a counter-invasion that undid Napoleon's work, returning northern Italy to Austria. Many of the republics attempted to resist but failed. The remanants of the Republics' armies attempted to retake Milan and establish a fully independent Italian nation there. Austrian forces resisted and the rebel forces retreated to Florence. After a year of holding up there, the army marched to Rome in 1801. They quickly defeated the Papal Guard, the Pope was forced to flee. A kingdom under Giuseppe I was established. Giuseppe I was getting too attached to France and the rising Napoleon, something many of the nationalistic Italians didn't want. With the help of the military, nationalist rioters overthrew Giuseppe. It was agreed to that a parliament should be formed. This was where a small fringe party began growing in power. After two years, the parliament got little done besides major cutting of the already small army. The Pope meanwhile was calling for Crusade, which made matters worse. Many of the Italians began looking for alternatives. They found it in this small fringe party, the Roman Party. This party was extremely nationalistic and interested in completing unification. So far, only Rome and some of the surroundings were held by the Republic. The Romans won, taking 85 percent of the parliament. From there they started massive reforms, such as shaping parliament into a Senate like the Roman Republic of old. Meanwhile, the Pope managed to pursuade Austria and the Two Sicillies to begin a crusade on Rome. These forces were a half-hearted attempt but the Roman party thought it was an excuse enough to elect a Dictator. This came in the form of the party leader, Juliano Agostino da Trieste. As dictator, he established a spy network, the Occulos (Eyes in Latin), suspeneded habius corpus and committed breaches of other rights in search of party enemies and supporters of the Pope. The Austro-Sicillian armies were easily defeated and the Pope would live silently in exhile in Austria for the rest of his life. After the defeat of the Crusaders, he restored rights and sent his spies to foreign lands. He was hailed as a war hero. The Senate gave him the title and powers of Caesar. Juliano-Agostino proceeded to change his name to be more Roman which it became Julius August. The new Caesar secured the former Papal lands beyond Rome and now looks to the borders of the new 'empire.' To the northeast lies the Austrians, looking large and powerful but are fairly busy with France in Germany. To the northwest lies the Italian 'Kingdom' and their French masters. They falsely believe they are the kings of Italy and must be destroyed before they get out of hand, but it should be warned that France and thier mighty forces back them up. To the south lies the troublesome Two Sicillies. They are fairly cut-off but no doubt will Austria come to their aid if you attack. However, Taranto and Siracusa are good naval bases. Sardinia is to the west but isn't a worthy target despite its neutrality for attack as it'd require a navy and takes away resources that are needed on the mainland. To the east across the Adriatic Sea lies the Ottoman holdings in the Balkans. Constantinople looks tempting and would no doubt be wise to control the Second Rome to affirm our imperial power, but it'd leave us open to Austrian attack. Nor would the Russians take kindly to a True Roman regime, falsely believing they carry on the Roman traditions they think they inheritted from the Byzantines. Now it is time, Ceasar, to make your choice and rebuild the Roman Empire from the Ashes. Roma Victrix!
So the story is about a "What if" scenario of what would happen if a Roman state was reborn. Nationalism was a wild, growing concept at this time and taking hold in many places such as Spain, Russia, Germany, France and of course Italy.
