Default Unpacking for Windows 7 users (M2TW)

    Hi to all!

After many hours of testing i found the way to extract the pak files in windows 7. So, let's start:

    1)
Turn off the AUC ( User Account Control) and restart your computer.

    Here how to disable it:
    http://www.downloadbestsoft.com/howt...ows-7--60.html

    2)
Go to /SEGA/Medieval II Total War/tools/unpacker and click on "unpack_all" bat file.

    3)
    After the unpacking, you
    must delete these files:

    data\descr_geography_new.txt
    and data\descr_geography_new.db

You'll find them in: ../Medieval II Total War/data

    4)
    Also add this:

    [io] file_first = true
on the top of the medieval2.preference.cfg file

    That's it!

Thanks to: Userpro (If you find him give him rep guys!)

    I wish you goodluck! !

Make a tutorial for Medieval 2 Total War Gold Edition on Windows 7...
Like you did the regular one for Windows 7.

It works exactly the same way, original or Gold.

    YAY!
So I can now try to add Saxons and Normans myself and I will release it, because I will make it so that they can:
    Build ports
    Train artillery units
    Build Churches (other religous buildings)
I will make the saxons pagan (somehow)
    I will add the Irish
    I will add the Welsh
I will put them in historical location (Normans in Caen region, Welsh in Caernarvon, Saxons in London Region, Irish in Dublin, and the English capital will be York: I'll make York a large town and also let them keep nottingham)

Why do I need to turn off AUC? It doesn't matter to me if the pass thing pops up... I can type blinded and I can type pretty fast with my fingers

    Edit:
Could you please add some pictures? I am new to this type of modding and I'd like to check if I am doing things right...I know it's simple...but just so that I can have that 100% insurance that I did it right.
    I'll try it still.

    Another edit:
I noticed I have a bunch of files under the compressed folder in downloads for m2tw... maybe my dad opened it this morning...but do I need to unzip them?

Edit (this is all to prevent spam, I do not post more than 2 posts close together):
    Really weird...
    They weren't there yesterday.
All the text files are there and all the data files are there in zipped folders (compressed).

A message came up saying "The program can't start because MSVCP71.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."
    What program...
Should I run the application called "unpacker"?

nad? msvc? I am new to this stuff :S
    What do you mean by

"Yes, run it nad move all the msvc files in with the unpacker."?

Medieval2/Kingdoms is XP based. The UAC plays games with it big time. You start having problems, do the link Moon has in his post above. It will help. No matter how fast you can type gets by this pos.

I'm going to close your other thread nad keep it in here.

Look at the pic. All those in red have to be copied in with unpack_all.bat.

So right click them all selected together "copy" than paste into the batch file with the batch file closed?

I am still a little off.
Do I copy and paste them into the batch file? Because that didn't work.
Do I copy and paste them into the application file? Because that didn't work.
Or do I copy and paste them into the folder? I haven't tried that yet.

    I figured it out.
I copied and pasted the dll files into the unpacker folder and I started the batch file, did the "Y" things and it is unpacking with the words moving really fast.
    So now I wait...

    Edit:
Where do all the files go to when they unpack?
Do I have to direct them somehwere?
Oh my gosh, my 100th post
    *yay*

How long is it supposed to take?
I'm still waiting, I do have a slow laptop but it is new. Not even a dual core processor, only upside to it is the big screen and the number pad so that I can do alt codes and type numbers easily.

    Those 2 files aren't under m2tw data.
    I CAN'T FIND THEM!

If you did not unpack 36,000+ files, you did not get them alll. Number one reason for disbaling the UAC.
The unpacked files with the UAC enabled are hidden in the users\username\appdata\roaming. You ave to unhide all files and folders in Folder Options to get there. Number two reason for disabling the UAC>

Should but not good. Do you want to start over from scratch and do this right?

    Yeah,
But the UAC doesn't work, there are two admin accounts and it said I needed to be logged in as admin. So... I don't see how it's gonna work.

If you can log in as Administrator, you can disable the UAC unless your father put some restrictions on the account.

    Probably.
    This is horrible :o
I just wanted to do those things :S
I can download and move files... he said he made me administrator...but I guess there's a way to restrict some things...this admin account wasn't an admin till this morning....humph.
    I'll find someway around.
But I probably won't be able to make the Saxons have the ability to build ports and ships and artillery, but I can make the Normans build churches (by adding a church to their capital).
I can't believe there is no mod out there that doesn't have the Normans and Saxons in historical locations and have the ability to build churches, ports, ships, and artillery.
Is there a mod out there that you may know of that has that stuff?

The Saxons in my mod is the Kingdom of Georgia. The Normans slot is still open. No use for me to add them as Saxons have already taken the Normans out of the game and Saxons are now England in 1080.

Wales would make it too crowded as I already have Ireland.

How many factions does KGCM have you can only have 31 including Papal States a nd Slave.

I mostly want the Welsh and the Irish because Dublin seems so empty...
But I also want the welsh because 3/4 of me is Welsh and English. The other 1/4 is Korean.
How can I add the Saxons to the campaign starting with London as its capital?
Last night when I tried it, every time I clicked to start a campaign it would take me back to main menu, same with all factions and it only let me load and play saved games.
So I put everything back to normal.
Now I have used the unpack batch file and it unpacked things but didn't unpack others, it did take a while to unpack, about 10-15 min or less.
So how can I add Saxons to start in London and put the Normans in Caen?
