Nice story. Half the time the Council will get you into trouble for a handful of florins. But then, if you intend to conquer the world what does it matter?

St Ubaid the Moor and Ubaid of Fez seem like a happy coincidence and a bit of a discovery - I guess the story about St Ubaid is real. It also seems you have not only been revising Biology and Chemistry. I hope the exams went well.

Movers and Shakers

When we look back at the beginning of the Great War of Europe we have to wonder why it ever took place. The French were facing invasion by the Genoese and had already loss two territories to them and possible invasion by England to the north. The Moors were spread far throughout Mediterranean and North Africa, with their North African provinces in the starting phases of unrest due to the little to no financial support, being considered backwater territories when once they were considered a necessary sanctuary for the Moors if they were driven out of Iberia. So why start a war with all these possible problems going on? Perhaps neither side wanted to. Rather there were people behind the scenes, in places where they could best influence the leading men of both kingdoms to engage each other in war to achieve their own ends. Who and why these men strived for war has been loss to history but evidence of their work is written in the blood of those who died on the battlefields of medieval Europe. – P.M. Smith


Secret Letter from Pope Conpangnus to Regent Rolin at Toulouse

Conpangnus, bishop, servant of the servants of God, to the faithful, Noble, Rolin, presiding in Toulouse; greeting, apostolic grace, and blessing.

My heart was rent in two when word of the death of your liege, King Louis VI, reached me here in Roma. He was a faithful servant of our Lord, and champion of the church. If it was possible I would declare him a saint, and delegate a feast day in his honor, but I write this letter with a another purpose in mind than conveying my condolences because it is a necessity. No one wants to follow a leader who has been excommunicated and with that outcome being brought continually before their eyes, I am sure they will keep their armies out of your lands.

Now remember that you do the Lord’s work. Do not do this for the glory and honor of the church but for the glory and honor of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his hand that you have been made king of the nation that is to eradicate the heathens from Western Europe forever and while you may obtain many riches from your upcoming campaign, you will be rewarded tenfold when you enter the Kingdom of Heaven where God himself dwells. Message from Yusuf to Ubaid in Toulouse

Ubaid, I am sending this from Cordoba where I am keeping an eye on the current affairs of state and our hot-headed “leader”, Norreddine. When I heard of the assassination of Louis I knew that Norreddine was behind it though there is nothing official been said about it here but the rumors all confirm my instincts. I know that this situation has made your situation in Toulouse very dangerous but we must stay the course. You must convince the new monarch to accept the agreement we have made with the late king. I have no doubt that you will succeed. We have worked too hard to only come this far and be stopped by the workings of Norreddine. I too may be in trouble as my informants have told me that he is looking for any associates of Fahkir. Two of Fahkir’s friends have been arrested and are awaiting trial in a few days so I will be leaving Cordoba soon to be on the safe side. I would rather not end up being executed as a traitor to the state.

I will not tell you how to do your job but know that Allah is with you for we are doing his work. We are fighting against usurpers of the throne that belonged to my family. As the original leaders of this country, my family was chosen by Allah to rule our people to greatness. Our people will be driven to ruin by the Norreddine and his pack of dogs. Our armies are spread thin by all the territory that we have gained in the last conflict but since the leaders cannot see past their noses most of these lands are under garrisoned and weak. The cities of the Northern Africa are in a state of unrest since Faraj’s disappearance into the desert to look for the famed city Timbuktu, but the Conclave just sits by as the citizens of Algiers and Marrakesh struggle to barely pay their taxes. We must show the people the error of their ways in following behind Qasim’s heir and if that means exposing them to war to bring them to their senses then be so. Allah sometimes brings us to hard times that we may realize our faults and thereby correct them so we are just in our actions because we do Allah’s will.

It seems crazy to allow such misfortune to fall upon our people but it is the only way without having to tear apart the fabric of our society. That was Fahkir’s mistake. He openly took the throne against the will of the people and in the end they turned against him. When this is over I will be taking over a vacant throne because no one of Miswar’s or Qasim’s royal family will be left to challenge me and when I drive the French from our lands I will be accepted and all the wrongs of the past will be righted.

Now Ubaid, I stress that you remember that this is Allah’s will and if you ever feel doubt or fear remember that He is the One; Allah the eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is he begotten, and there is none like unto Him.”

1120 Toulouse Ubaid’s Journal
Things have improved since the assassination of Louis. After days of rioting, the nobles were finally able to establish order in the city but not before a great many Moors were dead or exiled. I am only alive because Rolin convinced the people that I had no involvement in the assassination and had alerted them to its possibly albeit too late. I have been given my own bodyguard and freedom to move about the city but if stares could kill I would have died a million times over. The people were very suspicious about my presence in the city and my position here seems compromised beyond repair if not for the events of the past few weeks.

It began with the nobles recognizing Rolin as regent of France, until the young Philip comes of age. As the new regent, Rolin wanted to show the Moors by way of force that the French would not allow their king’s death to go without retribution. With most of the professional armies on the eastern border, Rolin had no one but the town militia to count on so after sending messages east for more support from the border and from Marseilles where the crusader army was readying to embark for the Holy Land (may our Muslim brothers drive them from their shores), he gathered what little town militia he had and marched for French-Moor border, with other nobles in tow.



After one week without any word from the raiding party, they arrived at the city gate with a fraction of the number they were before. Rolin was seriously injured and his wounds were infected from days of being in the dirty wilderness without treatment. I inquired as to what had happened and learned that the raiders had early success but the Moor patrols caught them off guard one night with many dying in the ambush.





It was at this moment I saw a chance to gain respect in the eyes of the people and the nobles. It was risky but if the situation deteriorated any further in the city, my life would be forfeit anyway. I gathered my bodyguard, who were apprehensive about my plans but couldn’t resist the chance to get their swords bloodied, and we slipped out of the city under darkness to assault our enemies. We met up with some mercenaries who I had befriended in case I needed to escape the country quickly,and I convinced to ride to battle with us. After a few days we happened upon the patrol.



It all happened so quickly. I had never led men into battle before but at that moment it was like I became another man, a Ubaid unrecognizable to me. My bodyguard later told me that they were impressed and frightened by the sudden change that had come over me. It was not every day that they saw a “man of God” turn into a man of war.








The battle was fierce but quick. Our forces wiped out the remaining Moors that had beaten Rolin because they had not received reinforcements to make up for their losses incurred by Rolin. I returned with the mercenaries and they along with my bodyguard soon spread the word of our victory. This has helped me in gaining favor in the eyes of the people but now I most importantly need to find a way to help Rolin heal from his wounds. If he dies, Yusuf’s agreement with France may crumble which I cannot allow to happen. Rolin must live, by Allah he must.

Norreddine examined the two ivory handle daggers in his hands. After a moment he looked up at the messenger and smiled. With two quick movements of the wrists he threw them into the map of France on the wall with one of them landing on the city of Toulouse and the other on Bordeaux.

“We strike back.”

Exams was been going alright As for Ubaid, it will be interesting to seen how he becomes a saint of a religion that he is totally against.

For those who want to see the French and Moors finally duke in open combat, its coming I assure you But if you thought you would see Norreddine in battle with French think again. I have bigger plans in store for him...

Its been awhile since I last updated and I have one in the works now. However, I must announce that I will be bringing this AAR to an end soon. I had grand plans on where to take this but things are going on now that wont permit me to so I am in the process now outlining the final chapters. I hope you've enjoyed the story as much as I did and that I can deliver a satisfying ending to the Moors' chronicle.

Thank you guys for all the support! I never expected to keep this going for so long but I am glad I did. I have plotted out the final parts of the story which will in 8 parts (may change as I go along) which will follow the story of Hassan Lahfali, son of the war hero Salan and Norreddine, the new Imperial Sultan of the Moors, and also a epilogue. I will post the first update of the finale on May 1, the first year anniversary of my starting this AAR. I want to thank you all once again for reading this little story of mine and commenting!!!
