    Default Banner/Flag mod only.

hi. im new here <waves at TWC>

ive had a good look and can not find what im looking for. I would very much like tochange the ingame banners/flags but that is all i want. You know the flags that jump up and down and look (IMO) out of place in the game world. i dont want new unit skins or unit cards.

is there a mod with just this ?

There's small banner tweak downloadable as a separate mod here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=443949. But it does not include many changes yet. More will come later.

MEDEN AGAN - Nothing in excess: another precept inscribed in the aforementioned place.

Unfortunately, that mod only changes the colors of the banners the troops wear on their backs. I think the original poster was requesting something that changed the colors for the main faction banners(flags) which is something I very much want as well. That's the one thing I haven't been able to figure out how to change and it's driving me crazy. There are only a handful of factions that I'm willing to play, and it's because of those hideous/loud/clashing/garish or just plain ugly color tints. I don't know what the developers problem is but they've been managing to make their units look ass ugly no matter how good the 3D modeling is due to bad textures and awful color tints. I suspect a random number generator could be used to come up with the RGB values for those tints and the game would look better. That's how bad it is. And we all know it, too. What do they think they are up to? Giving modders something to do, or do the devs really have such bad taste? Whatever it is, whenever they release a game I spend many, many hours trying to make the least awful factions good enough that I can stomach playing them and then eventually give up on about the third faction overhaul. I suppose I'm getting my money's worth but I'd much rather not quit playing good games out of frustration over trivialities like color tints and textures. Why can't they do better? Look how much better games like King Arthur the roleplaying game look, and that was a low budget title! There's no excuse for "ugly" in a franchise that leads the market. Bah.

Anyway, on the bright side at least the icons look decent this time. No more RGB(0,255,0) tinted line infantry staring you in the face on the campaign map 24/7. Only on the battle maps! Honestly, I think these devs never even play their own game. I think this is how they do it:

Bob: "Hey, Fred, what do you think about RGB(255,0,255) for the Royal Goofballs of Death?"

Fred: "Whoa... I like the 0 in there! Very risky move! What color is that?"

Bob: "Should be purple I think. Red and Blue is purple, right? Royal Guards should be purple"

Fred: "Yeah, I guess that prolly is purple Bob. Great choice!"

    And so on.

You can turn those flags off in the game settings you know, if that's what you meant. haha.

Didn't know that only the sashimonos and noboris (the banners which the standard bearers carry) were affected by the mod. I never play with those stupid flagpoles set to show, so I never got this problem. You can avoid them in the same way, just like Ftmch said.

Yeah, that's an option on the battle map. Not a particularly GOOD option unless you like mousing around everywhere looking for a needle in a haystack when you're giving orders and trying to check morale status and etc, but it does at least remove the "my eyes are bleeding from this massively over-saturated sea of bobbing gaudily colored faction banners!" issue. Unfortunately, the same banner is used on the campaign map and those can't be turned off. As far as I know.

I don't have a problem with the faction banners themselves. In fact, I don't want to have to do without them. I'd just like to know how to change the color schemes into something I find less offensive. Even just a toned down version the existing colors (and a massive reduction in the number of factions that have white banners, period) would make me happy. I've experimented with all the RGB values in "faction_banner_tables", "faction_uniform_colours_tables", and "faction_tables". Between those three, I've found out how to tweak every tint in the game as far as I can tell. Except for the main faction flags. I thought it might be a texture, but if so I haven't found it yet. Anyone have a hint for me?

Anyway, this patch seems to have broken most the mods I had installed so now I'm back to playing at default everything. Except for my color schemes. Which makes it all the more annoying I can't make the faction flags match the more subdued and less annoying color scheme. Looking at the way they mis-spell armor and color and etc I guess these devs are British. Maybe that's the problem, though I always heard British people knew how to dress. I wonder how this game would look if the developers were French?

I haven't looked into the matter of the campaign banners yet, but in regard to those flagpoles on the battlefield, I turn them off in order to enhance the sense of visual realism there. The resulting difficulty of keeping track of all the units in the midst of the action is also the most realistic simulation of an actual battle from the perspective of a commander stuck on the ground in any period of history. Just goes to increase the challenge, tension and excitement of the game.

As much as I would like to say that this is all a matter of taste, I do believe that CA, in their attempt to make a realistic simulation of the Warring States period in Japan with properly designed landscapes, samurais and all, did not put equal effort in the colour schemes of the units. Fortunately, that's where we modders can come in.

I'd agree if units maintained some kind of pretense of formations but in my battles they all seem to just melt into one big pile after 15 or 20 seconds... which is coincidentally right about when their morale starts failing. I guess at that point there's not much left to do anyway, though. Maybe I'll give it another try and see if I can live with it

I'd rather have modders working on other improvements and additions. Doesn't seem like color schemes is something modders should have to mess with. And this is an ongoing issue.... I recall when I saw the hot-pink pants on my german tribesmen in Rome Total War I thought there must be something wrong with my graphics card. But then I saw the fluorescent-green pants on the Gauls and figured out there's just somebody working at that company with absolutely no sense of taste. I'd love to see a pic of that guy sitting in front of his computer at work. I want to see the way he dresses. Anyway, at this late date I don't think it's too much to ask that they hire an interior decorator or a fashion designer as a consultant for a couple weeks to give them some tutoring on which color combos work and which don't. What would that cost? $10k? $20k? As successful as these games have been I think they can afford it, and they obviously need a clue. I don't want to be too hard on them because I've been a huge fan of these games and they single-handedly salvaged the tactical wargame genre from the brink of extinction in my opinion. But, it's been 10 years. Color schemes aren't (or shouldn't be) that difficult. Enough is enough.
