The installation procedure can vary with the mods. Check the opening post of the thread for the mod you're interested in, as installation instructions are usually given there. The downloaded mod file is often compressed and needs to be decompressed (extracted) first and then as a rule put in the data folder of the game, but sometimes there's more to be done before it's operational and all mods do not work well together. Their creators know best any issues connected with them.
