The round shields were more popular, but similar to kite (teardrop) shields existed among the early Bulgars as well, as can be seen on some of their graffiti (the left one on the third row).

In the balkans the 1st people that brought kite shields were the Avars!
Romans copied those shields but for centuries their remained "loyal" to oval and round ones. Only in the late 9th century and certainly in the middle of 10th one kite shields were adopted in mass numbers.
TGC in order to continue its development seak one or more desicated scripters to put our campaign scripts mess to an order plus to create new events and create the finall missing factions recruitment system. In return TGC will give permision to those that will help to use its material stepe by step. The result will be a fully released TGC plus many mods that will benefit TGC's material.
Despite the mod is dead does not mean that anyone can use its material

The kite shild became very popular in middle and late Medieval Bulgaria (XIII-XV century)
For TGC time raound and teardrop but the pics are good rep +
Considering the equipment and that the author is Gorelik, I think that's a Volga Bulgar.
However, I'd like to make a short note about the boots shown there, whose shape indeed fits with what the Bulgars wore. F.e. here you can see some boots from the Bulgar graffiti and that most of them have the front part higher than the rest, as in Gorelik's picture.

"...We are Bulgarians and and all suffer from one common disease [e.g., the Ottoman rule]" and "Our task is not to shed the blood of Bulgarians, of those who belong to the same people that we serve" - Gotse Delchev, Collective memory, national identity, and ethnic conflict: Greece, Bulgaria, and the Macedonian question, Victor Roudometof, Greenwood Publishing Group, 2002, ISBN 0275976483, p. 79.
"The Bulgarians, these are the people, who had everything they wished for. A nation, where the one who buys the nobility with the blood of the enemy receives titles..." - Magnus Felix Ennodius, description of battle at Margus (Morava) river 505 AD
I have to agree with you.
EDIT: Be sure my friend Tang-Ra that TGC's bulgarians are a result of the Bulgarian TW team
that made a wonderfull and extensive research and modeling.
We are honored that we work with them and you will see the results when the mod will be released.

These bulgarians are very nice looking(but also look fearsome).
Just a small request:Could you show some pics of bulgarian infantries closer. The pictures show some of them from quite far away, and can't see the detail that well.Just if you have time.

Yea now that i have CineEdit i will replace their preview pics with some same style as the other previews.
I did not have the expirience back then and both Bulgarian and Roman Thematic previews have not the images they deserve.
Soon enough my friend as imageshack has a limit of 500 pictures and i am close to that.

are a those large shield taken from a description of Svyatoslav and his men?
You mean these guys (the spearmen)? I think they were rather based either on Pseudo-Maurice's Strategikon or Leo VI's Taktika (I think it was the Taktika, but I'm not sure), which described large, board shields, like doors.
yeah, I meant on Kopienotzsi - Taktika mentions large shields, but that is copied directly from Strategikon of Maurice (like almost everything about Slavs).Anyway, Leo the Deacon says that Rus warriors of Svyatoslav were armed with spears, swords, javelins, bows and shields "the height of the man".
I love the half barding horses.
great! Thanks!
EB II is finally out! ...NOW!!!...
These units look awesome. I can't wait to try them ingame!
Just to note that these units are horribly outdated by now and will, hopefully, be improved upon before the first release of the mod.
And, btw, I'm currently preparing a large update to the historical information of the preview. I hope it will be as interesting to read, at least as it is interesting to research and write.
