    Does anyone know if this is possible? I imagine there are quite a few people who are just begging for the performance boost of lower detailed units while retaining the "a battle just happened here" feel that's so integral to the Total War series.

    i suspect either:

    1. the transition would require loading a special chunk of memory or thread reserved for loading low detail textures apart for those already in combat.
    2. the engine is optimized for such thing and they're already low detail.
