Thread: Possible to edit the keys.dat file or change console key?

Default Possible to edit the keys.dat file or change console key?

Hi, new here and registered for this specific question since i couldn't find an answer by searching.

I know console keys are different depending on your keyboard, and I know what mine is - it's the apostrophe ' key. Trouble is, that is the same key as the quotes ", so whenever I need to refer to a unit or settlement ID I can only use the ones with single names; no underscores or spaces, because they don't need quotes. As soon as I try to type " it closes the console.

Basically, this is a pain in the arse. I have tried changing my keyboard language in win 7 but it doesn't seem to change anything, and I can't find a programme to edit the keys.dat file and manually change it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers.

Cheating is sometimes too much fun.

Hmm... I think there should be an option to change that button in the controls menu but I'm not too sure. Try accessing the controls menu through the main menu while not ingame.

Nah, thre isn't an easy way I know of to do it with menus. I can bind something else to the ' key (and get the warning that 'this key is bound to show developer console' or whatever) to clear it, but then I've just got no console key.

I found you can open the .dat file in notepad, too, but the ' character does not appear anywhere in it, and changes to the file do not last past opening the programme.

Edit: worked it out! For anyone else searching this, you need to change the language controls on your keyboard to something like German, then randomly poke the keys to see what they're mapped to now. Was sure I had tried this, but apparently not

I don't have the mod installed nor am I going to install so you will have to tell me if they have the console disabled in its .cfg. Do they?

No they haven't disabled it, i used it before i had this problem i always used the ~ key to open the debug console, i use that for cheats for money. As long as i can cheat the money, its fine. Isn't there an trainer for money that works in TATW?

I haven't run across a trainer for it. Can you go back a save and see if the key works on it?

Nobody has found a way yet.

Check the language settings of your keyboard. Odds are they aren't pure English, either US or UK.

My keybard is US, and ~key doesnt work in Medival 2 Gold Edition and TATW DAC, but in for instance google chrome or windows the key just works...

Might sound nuts but try it with a different browser?

    Are you using a laptop?

I see you are posting about this even here ( LINK ) cause I gave you the answer how to change the keyboard input language.

I had this similar problem loooong ago and my cheat key is the key just under the ESC key. Also, have you tried to go to DaC Keyboard options and set to Default settings? That usually works.

Sons of *******, leave that poor, war torn country in peace.
If you are a citizen of one of these countries, then DO NOT ask any help from me on these forums, since, in protest against this aggression by your governments, I do not provide assistance/help anymore.
Let Syria be finally in peace.

Since Elvenkind and the TATW team have this figured out, I'll leave this in their hands.

text\descr_shortcuts appears to be just a general listing of key bindings - changing entries in there doesn't change anything in the options, else you could change this entry:
    Code:
    show_console GRAVE_ACCENT hidden
grave accent is the ~ symbol on the English keyboard

    Edit: it's actually very easy

Delete the hidden remark in the descr_shortcut file (place descr_shortcuts into the vanilla data\text folder)
Delete keys.dat in the preferences folder (vanilla and mods)
Start your game and change the key setting (misc)

Edit 2: just checked it by changing\adding Alt+C as key combination - works perfectly.

Edit 3: to completely get rid of the original setting TWO identical entries in descr_shortcut need to be changed

    From
    Code:
    show_console GRAVE_ACCENT hidden
    To
    Code:
    show_console C ALT
This makes the Alt+C combination the default to call up the console - the setting can then be changed via options\key setting\misc

You can change the camera buttons via the regular options, but I think it might be only for the battle camera which at the moment uses the numerical keypad. You will also have to re-assign the conflicting key settings.
