My general has the ability to force a nighttime attack, but I looked everywhere in the encyclopedia for what that does - couldn't find anything. I assume it hampers archers ability and probably makes it easier to hid, but I'm not sure.

They talk about it here. Look under "night battles" I hope it helps! ^^
Only definitive use I found for night battle is that the enemy cannot be reinforced, so it's a great way to pick apart a huge multiple full stack armies.
Ty Daria for that link, I was wondering the same thing.
"The art of war is of vital importance to the state. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected" - Sun Tzu
Night battles also cause morale drops in armies not under command of a general who knows night battles, I think.
If you rep me, leave your name. I'll look more kindly on your future transgressions.
So to sum up:
Night battles lowers visibility and projectile range for both sides.
If the opposing army does not have the ability to attack at night, then...
The enemy will have a morale penalty and will not be able to receive reinforcements.
FYI: even if one side has Two stacks with the night fighter trait, they won't be able to reinforce.
