Thread: Chronobomb's Guide to Retainers

    Default Chronobomb's Guide to Retainers

So I have an incomplete list of retainers. Please Help make this list complete. This is also my first guide ever, so please critique.

It seems that you can actually get the same retainer twice. Especially with the monk's monkey. I have gotten it 3 times before.

The Daimyo gets special Legendary Retainers that are pretty rare and so far aren't available for anyone else. So either don't level the Heir till the old man dies or bump him off quickly to allow the heir to get these retainers and not the standard general's retainers.

One of my generals was given the option of choosing between Biwa player (+1 morale for army) and Joro (+1 morale for army -5% movement). I couldn't help but wonder if there were any other possible combinations out there that were seriously imbalanced, and it looks like there might be.

    - foxy mistress vs heroic samurai
    - boyhood companion vs soldier mistress vs drinking companion
    - taiko drum master vs master netsuke carver

There are several ways to seriously gimp yourself with retainers. Over Ambitious wife could cause your general to become a turncoat and be able to run away faster with your army. But please add any I am missing.

Nice list mate, any chance you could make the character headings a bit bolder (or put the lists in spoilers for each character), the whole thing is confusing my brain a little

Add Disgraced Yakuza for Metsuke - AFAIK it's +2 for repression in the region where Metsuke is.

For the Metsuke/Monk/Ninja what does the +1 do to cunning/zeal/subterfuge.. I understand the % chances of the other ones. But what does +1 cunning actually do in the game?

Its provides the base chance/skill when the Metsuke bribes, apprehends, repress a region, or detects enemy agents. Higher the level makes it more likely to succeed.

You should consider adding the missionaries too. They have quite different retainers.

I have yet to use missionaries and would be glad to add them to my list if anyone wants to post them. Thanks for reminding me about them.

    Got some more for ninjas....

Apocryphal Ninjato: +1 to subterfuge when assassinating. A single thrust and life is gone.

Blowpipe: +5% to the change that the ninja will avoid detection when unsuccessful. Nothing is what it seems.

Love the guide! If I see any new ones I will post em. ^^

Best retainer I have gotten so far:

    Uesugi Kenshin (Daimyo)
    Sword of Amaterasu:

Instills fear in the enemy (reduces Morale)
+5% to the effect of the inspire ability.

Maybe you should add Wives to this:

Beautiful Wife gives +1 Defense on land battles.
Greedy Wife gives +1 morale and +10% upkeep?
there are more, but right now I have all Beautiful wives and one Fecund wife.

    I updated.

So far it seems that the real special retainers are restricted to only one and then you can't get anymore of the others. Like the Legendary Koto player. If it gives +2 to your entire army, or debuffs the enemy, you can only have one per general. Still testing.

Does anyone know how your choice of retainers is determined ? Is it entirely random or does it depend on the provinces your control/buildings your have in your cities/actions on the campaign or battle map ?

    Cheers !

The only action that reliably determines retainers is fleet battles. 70% of the times I gained a retainer that was admiral based retainer. Otherwise it seems completely random so far. In order to see what all the retainers were I just kept reloading before I fought and was able to get most of them after about 30 reloads.
