Default Making Factions Playable - Problem

So, the old way of doing this with ETW/NTW doesn't seem to work anymore.

Firstly I removed the Shimazu, made playable the Shoni. When I launched the game, the Shimazu were unplayable (gone from the list), just like I set it, but the Shoni were not playable either. Just one less faction in the list.

A good thing to note is that the UI seems to adjust itself to make space for the clans that are playable, so making more than the set amount per ESF may be possible without luac or UI file editting.

Each of the factions seems to load a Variant file to be displayed as their 'unit', I'v yet to see the link to this Variant anywhere. It might be that the fact the unplayable factions don't have one set that is preventing them being playable even when set as playable in the ESF(?).

Furthermore I noticed something troubling, the Hattori clan are set as playable within the vanilla ESF, when using my Limited Edition Redeem code, nothing file wise seemed to change (barring perhaps the .exe) to actualy make them playable. So I don't know if this is an .exe limitation of the game to make certain factions playable? I hope not.

I'm waiting for Husserl to figure it all out atm.

Could you 'duplicate' the Hattori into a new nation (the name Hatori is free. ) without tripping the DLC hardcode?

Making the Hattori playable in any form would be illegal.

I'm trying to make everyone else playable.

I just want the Ashikaga playable so I can rule Kyoto without having the entire country out for blood. :p

Mitch, it's possible (and likely) that the LE Hattori thing is done dynamically in runtime? Hopefully what that means is that everybody except the Hattori are unlockable, because it'd suck if it restricted us to the default nine.

edit: after all, there weren't actually any file differences enabling the special units in ETW and NTW, as far as I recall. What happened is that if you had the entitlements on your Steam account, the game let you use those units. That didn't stop people from modding in different, new, units so I'm hoping it also means that we can unlock other factions without running into messy restrictions because of those darned Hattori.

The Hattori are just one of the many non-playable factions in a product I legally own. If I wanted to use them illegally that option exists, but I see no reason not to unlock data I already have (a license to). I'd rather not wait the month(s) for the USD 2.99 "DLC" of a few kilobytes.

You don't have a license to that particular use of the data, though. The EULA regulates to what extent and for what purposes the software license can be used and I'm pretty sure that the law is on CA's side.

Regardless, forget about unlocking the cursèd Hattori lest ye interfere with the efforts to unlock the other, non-limited edition factions.

Well, doesnt the Limited Edition cost only $5 more, and isn't it really not "Limited" at all?

Well, it's limited to people who aren't using Steam. :p

Had I known, I might have just gotten a boxed copy but it's too late now. I have no interest in the Hattori anyway, though.

I don't think there's a section in the EULA (which I don't recall being prompted with either, but that's not really relevant >.>) regarding what we can and can't do with the game's content; if there is, please direct me to it and I'll drop the topic.

The Hattori are just another of the locked factions, to exclude them for the sake of a boolean is too much acquiescence to the on-disk DLC model.

You can't release DLC for free. You can't release software for free that the company is asking money for, fullstop.

CA have posted on these forums before in a harsh manner, reminding the modders than unlocking DLC for free is very illegal.

It won't happen, and if it does, it will be removed very quickly from TWC.

Not to mention people payed extra money to get the faction, so it's not fair on them to give it away for free to others. Regardless of how much I disagree with the DLC policy of gaming companies.

Honestly, it depends on where they sue you. They're contracts and you're specifically asked to signify your acceptance of their terms before you can install their products. The argument has been made that they're adhesion contracts, but I think even if you go down that route, that just extinguishes contractual liability--criminal liability still exists because you're performing an unauthorized use of the product and there's the possibility for civil damages for lost profits regardless of the EULA.

But alllll that aside, even if it were as legal as walking down the street, it's against the board rules and nobody wants nonsense about the Hattori ruining our chances to try to figure out how to unlock all the other factions.

Long story short, making DLC content available would piss CA off and it would go down faster than it would go up since they can threaten the existence of this site since no web host would tollerate legal actions.
