Can someone give a step by step on how to unlock all factions? I want to play the Asai.
Btw I am greatly enjoying the game and the optimization of the retail version is first class!!!

Moved to the Mod Workshop/Text Editing & Scripting.
I wouldn't mind playing as the Ikko-Ikki either. Anyone take a look at this yet?
Long live the Old Guard! Sic Semper Tyrannis!
This is something im looking into although i cant find the descr-strat like the old game i go to data and only find campaign maps click on that and get display hmm it must be somewhere else or they stopped it
UPDATE!
Searched my pc for descr_strat and only got stuff for medieval and rome might have to wait for a mod but i heard they made this game basically unmoddable =/

thats because if you look around at the file setup --
Shogun2 file setup will resemble empire and napoleon ... NOT Rome and medieval1&2...
never played empire or napoleon to a great extent so i wouldnt have a clue how were they unlocked or was it impossible?
Use pack file managers to open the game packs. For example, the data.pack will have a bunch of different documents to edit. They are all similar to medieval and rome, just packed neatly.
Obviously, Shogun 2 does not have a startpos.esf file, as Empire and Napoleon do (at least I couldn't find it). Then it was relatively easy to make minor factions playable.
However, since the special and collector's editions of Shogun 2 contain an additional clan made playable (the Hattori), many people who bought those editions would be pretty pissed if a simple mod would do for what they paid extra money (already for Empire mods added way more units than any DLC could offer).
Accordingly, I'm afraid there's a good chance that it's hard-coded this time around.
Please, someone tell me I'm wrong on this one...
EDIT: Oops... maybe should have read YD's post more closely. Going to try to find something in the pack files...
In fact there is a startpos.esf. You can find it - as YD said - in the data.pack by unpacking it.
Yeah...I don't think it's just about the Hattori clan. Obviously that can be avoided as a public download. I think people just want access to other factions that are of historical interest (Asai, Ikko-Ikki, Ashikaga Shogunate, Imagawa, etc).

so can u guys manage to do this or is it impossible?
oke i unpackt it and now how can i get it to work in the game
A question concerning unlocking factions, upon investigation there are at least three startpos.esf's that I've found, one in the campaigns folder under benchmarks, one in the data pack, and one in the patch pack. Would all three require changes or would the one located in the patch pack override the others, also would changes need to be made to the correspoding lua? What other changes that I'm not aware of, might be required?
Admittedly, I know very little about this topic, but would at least like to initiate a serious conversation concerning getting the factions unlocked. Any thoughts?
Also, as part of the dialogue, potentially what's at issue here, has CA gone beyond simply not going out of there way to make the game modder friendly or have they actively taken steps to prohibit modding?
You always use the latest version of the file to mod it. So in the latest patch you would use that startpos.esf.
Most of the scripting within the scripting.lua's that accompany the esf set the game up depending on what of the 9/10 factions you are playing as, so the script doesn't take into account the possibilty that the player is another faction.
That said the game will still work without the altering any of the scripting, you just won't have things like the camera being set up correctly, missions and events, etc, All of the things that fine tune a campaign.
If you are looking at doing any type of campaign mod, I would advise you learn to mod the scripting too, though as said, it isn't a must.
As for getting the factions unlocked, modders are currently attempting to do just that.
Thanks for the quick response. I've just attempted to modify the startpos.esf in the patch.pack to no availe, neither the esf editor 1.48 or s2c would open or convert the file.
Edit: A thought ... if the startpos.esf in the patch.pack can't be opened or converted, if it was simply deleted would the primary startpos.esf revert to the one contained in the data pack?

I am going to chime in for a moment. I have read several threads about unlocking factions and whether or not the other factions are really factions or scripted reactionist. Rather than search them all out, this is as good a place as any to comment.
The other factions are all complete factions. Yes, they are unlockable, we know this because of the bonus clan. Stop and think a moment, in ETW the bonus content were units and the DLC were units. If you stop to think about it, the AUM for ETW really took a bite out of Creative's intent to continually offer newer and more units. As the units turned out so easy to mod for a select few brilliant people here, the bonus content for S2TW is now an extra clan. Who wants to bet the DLC for S2TW is going to be unlockable clans???!!!
As a note as this is also as good a place as any...
Getting attacked by a full stack within just a few turns from the beginning is not due to some scripted fake army. Yes, starting positions are scripted at different places determined by the faction/clan you choose to begin as. This can be seen between the Oda and Tokagawa clans as they start in direct opposition of one another. Both factions start with the same units as best I can tell, just scattered differently. The reason you get hit by a full stack so fast is the number of starting units, the number of recruitment slots used, and how badly the attacking or defending clan hates (or is afraid of) you seem to all come into direct play. If someone can confirm this for me I would appreciate the reply! LOL
If seeking instant gratification without thought to repercussions, take a shotgun to it!
so can you guys unlock it ?
Any News or progress?

I am afraid not atleast to what I have tried to find. This is pretty hard to make any other clan playable. Why I know this you ask? Well I have been working for many hours just these last couple of days just to see what I could do and so far... no avail. The problem I am having is that the startpos.esf files will simply not save and the two startpos.esf files that I am aware of need to be modded a bit for the clans to unlock but without them saving at all... well I can't do much but I am still trying a bit and I bet others are trying too. Heard of people unlocking the clans but they don't want to release them due to unknown reasons, but this is what I heard... not a fact. Just like alot of people I sure hope someone soon can crack this because I don't even play shogun 2 SP camp. anymore because I find it dull and want the other clans!!! Besides me though how is the progress with others?
