Actually the latest find of a Niederbieber/Heddernheim/etc. type helmet is from Bulgaria and dates to the late 4th century AD, found alongside a noseguard from a probably separate helmet, most likely a Quadripartite or Bipartite ridge helmet. See Miks' book on helmets.

Furthermore there is absolutely no evidence ridge helmets offered inferior protection.

That particular book by D'Amato is actually quite nice but some of his interpretations are problematic. But some are fantastic too.

It's definitely one of his best works. Archaeologist Andrei Negin also had a major hand in the book.

It will be followed up by a second one that covers from 500 AD to 1453 AD, give or take.

I've read about Niederbieber maybe combined with nasal protector as hybrid helmet with newer styles but thought it was based on late 3rd century finds. That there is an example of helmet with strong Niederbieber features dated to late 4th century is a new information to me.By coincidence I just received my copy of that book on Cataphracts two days ago too.

In some other debate on TW center I've noticed somebody was asking how many illustrations by Boris Burandt are included in his "Die Ausrüstung der römischen Armee auf der Siegessäule des Marcus Aurelius in Rom".

I've bought digital version of that book and sadly there is not a single one(digital version even lacked that which is on hardcover version). There are illustrations in it but surprisingly none of author's own reconstructions and interpretations. Most pics in the book consists from photos of Marcus Aurelius collumn and authors re-drawings of few tombstones and archeological objects but the book's main value is in its text.

But Boris Burandt definitely did artworks to some book/s.Since two of such artworks were published in just released Czech Academy of Science book about Roman civilization which also include chapters about Marcomannic wars and presense of Roman army in what is now Czech republic(I also have few of mine works in it) and in the book summary of sources it seems those two pics by Burandt are from this work: https://www.amazon.com/Die-Armee-der.../dp/3791724134
(english translation of it was completed this year just few weeks back from now).

As I said it's in the Miks book on helmets. Miks concludes that the ridge helmet nasal fragment is unrelated to the Niederbieber helmet fragment.

IMHO it is quite fascinating that this helmet looks very similar to old Greek Hoplite helmets.
