Need help with fixing a bug

As you can see the icon of the trait never appears when a character of my faction gets a new trait. I do see it on the character itself but never when I get such a message as above.

It worked in the past but the past year I believe it didn't appear anymore. I didn't get much annoyed by it but right now would love to see it fixed and get back to normal.

What of the core files must I change or edit?

Delete the references.txt and see if it comes back.

I think that was 'preferences.txt' and not 'references.txt'.....

Things like that are supposed to be in the export_descr_character_traits.txt and export_acillaries.txt.
The description files would be in the export.vnvs.txt and export.ancillaries.txt.
