Spearmen supremacy?

In my many battles in this wonderful mod, I have noticed that spearmen type units prove time and time again to be very reliable troops. They are kings against horses, and solid against other infantry. I notice that sometimes well trained swordsmen like Crusader knight mercs or basic european swordsman unit can perform rather poorly in infantry/infantry fights while spearmen seem to be great at it.

Does anyone else notice this in the battles? Spearmen seem to be the perfect package.(

As a side note, what is your favorite spearmen unit? Mine is, without a doubt Eastern Spearmen. I LOVE them!

Scoutatoi is really one of the best early spearmen in the game if not the best (stats, numbers and cost)

I like everything about them. Their cost, their stats, and they look pretty sweet when fully upgraded not to mention the free upkeep in cities.

Pikes and halberds are kings against horses.

I haven't used them yet, but the Dismounted Khagan Druzhina appear to be very good. They might be the only Elite spearmen in the game. Scutatoi are only Superior.

Spearmen are the Bees Knees....

In early Era beginings...spear militia with padded amour and a few mercs keep the wolves away from the doors. Unless your Lithuanian, Italian, or Egyptian, then you have immediate/almost immediate access to the good stuff.

From turns 30-60 arrive the armored sergeants, Italian/Saracen Militia to hold down your battle line and ensure that your campaign has a positive outcome....

Spearmen are really the best unit holder type in game (aside the pike units). Hammer and Anvil ftw.

Italian militia and Novgorod Home Guard... although the Kievan Palace Guard or Scoutati are probably the best stat/cost wise.
