    Sengoku Era Personalities

Id really like to see them in the game, this is a mod proposal to create the historic characters that made the Sengoku era what it was, its a proposal to create the historic Heroes, Agents and Generals of the era.

Im not sure if they would be best as units, traits for the generals or agents, or perhaps a combination of these depending on the individual, if that possible. I dont know how to to do this myself, but id be willing to contribute extensive research, creative design and statistics, with historical accuracy and fun in mind.

    So lets begin...

    Heroes

The following are the most celebrated and legendary canidates for this in no particular order.

Miyamoto Musashi (宮本 武蔵?) (c. 1584–June 13 (Japanese calendar: May 19), 1645), also known as Shinmen Takezō, Miyamoto Bennosuke, or by his Buddhist name Niten Dōraku,[1] was a Japanese swordsman and samurai famed for his duels and distinctive style. Musashi, as he was often simply known, became renowned through stories of his excellent swordsmanship in numerous duels, even from a very young age. He was the founder of the Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū or Niten-ryū style of swordsmanship and the author of The Book of Five Rings (五輪書, Go Rin No Sho?), a book on strategy, tactics, and philosophy that is still studied today.

A hero sword unit or trait

Sasaki Kojirō (佐々木 小次郎?, also known as Ganryū Kojirō) (1585? - April 13, 1612) was a prominent Japanese swordsman, born in Fukui Prefecture. He lived during the Sengoku and early Edo periods and is most remembered for his death while battling Miyamoto Musashi in 1612. The first reliable account of his life states that in 1610, because of the fame of his school and his many successful duels, including once when he fended off three opponents with a tessen, Kojirō was honored by Lord Hosokawa Tadaoki as the chief weapons master of the Hosokawa fief north of Kyūshū. Sasaki later became skilled in the wielding of a nōdachi, and used one he called "The Laundry-Drying Pole" as his main weapon.

A hero Nodachi unit for Oda Nobunaga or Trait

Kamiizumi Ise-no-kami Fujiwara-no-Nobutsuna (上泉伊勢守藤原信綱 1508(?) - ???) was a samurai in Japan’s Sengoku Period famous for creating the Shinkage-ryū school of combat.
In 1555, Hōjō Ujiyasu ordered an attack on Ōgo castle, now commanded by Kamiizumi. Kamiizumi surrendered the castle without a fight, and joined Ujiyasu. This same year, Uesugi Kenshin invaded western Kōzuke in order to re-take Hirai Castle. Kamiizumi abandoned the Hōjō side, and sent messages to the Uesugi. He became one of Uesugi's generals, and helped the Uesugi drive out the Hōjō forces.[1] Kenshin seized total control of Kōzuke, installed Nagano Narimasa as governor in Minowa Castle, and returned to his base in Echigo.

    Hojo General unit

Yagyū Sekishūsai Taira-no-Munetoshi (柳生石舟斎平宗厳 1529 - May 25, 1606) was a samurai in Japan’s Sengoku period famous for mastering the Shinkage-ryū school of combat, and introducing it to the Tokugawa clan.

    General Unit under Matsunaga

Yagyū Munenori (柳生 宗矩?, 1571 - May 11, 1646) was a Japanese swordsman, founder of the Edo branch of Yagyū Shinkage-ryū, which he learned from his father Yagyū "Sekishusai" Muneyoshi. This was one of two official sword styles patronized by the Tokugawa Shogunate (the other one being Ittō-ryū). Munenori began his career in the Tokugawa administration as a hatamoto, a direct retainer of the Tokugawa house, and later had his income raised to 10,000 koku, making him a minor fudai daimyo (vassal lord serving the Tokugawa), with landholdings around his ancestral village of Yagyū-zato. He also received the title of Tajima no Kami (但馬守).

    General Trait

Yagyū Hyōgonosuke (柳生兵庫助?, 1579–1650) or — Toshiyoshi (利厳) was the founder of the Owari mainline of the Yagyū Shinkage-ryū style of swordsmanship in the early Edo period. He was a son of Yagyū Toshikatsu and a grandson of Yagyū Muneyoshi (Sekishūsai).
From 1603 to 1607, he served Kato Kiyomasa. Thereafter, he became an itinerant warrior. Beginning in 1615, he served Tokugawa Yoshinao, the founder of the Owari branch of the Tokugawa clan. He directly instructed Yoshinao in the Yagyū Shinkage-ryū.

    General unit or General Trait

Hikita Bungorō (疋田 文五郎?) was a swordsman during the Sengoku Period of the 16th century. Hikita Bungoro was the nephew of the famous swordsman Kamiizumi Hidetsuna, in which they were both very well versed in the ways of bujutsu. Another famous swordsman by the name of Yagyū Muneyoshi (the father of Yagyū Munenori) had seen the superb skills set by Hidetsuna.[1] Following this Hōzōin In'ei, the head monk of the Hōzōin temple in Nara, arranged for a duel between Muneyoshi and Hidetsuna. However, Hidetsuna sent Bungoro to take up the challenge as to underestimate the abilities of Muneyoshi. Throughout the course of Bungoro's duel, he had struck Muneyoshi several times with his shinai, which greatly impressed those in attendance.

    Hero sword unit

Momochi Sandayu - A leader of the Iga ninja clans, who supposedly perished during Oda Nobunaga's attack on Iga province. There is some belief that he escaped death and lived as a farmer in Kii Province.[110] Momochi is also a branch of the Hattori clan.

    Agents

Fūma Kotarō (風魔小太郎?, ?? – 1603) was the name adopted by the leader of the Fūma clan (風魔一党, Fūma-ittō?) of ninja during the Sengoku era of Japan. According to some records, his name was originally Kazama (風間).

    Ninja Agent for the Hojo

Hōzōin In'ei (宝蔵院 胤栄, 1521–1607) was a Buddhist monk, head of the Hōzō-in temple, and guardian of all the temples of Nara, who founded a school of Sōjutsu called Hōzō-in-ryū. In'ei was a connoisseur of the martial arts, having practiced Nen-ryū under Toda Yosaemon and Iizasa Chōisai Ienao's Katori Shinto-ryū. In'ei was noted for having arranged the meeting between Kamiizumi Ise no kami Nobutsuna and Yagyū Sekishusai Muneyoshi, being the catalyst for the creation of Yagyū Shinkage-ryū.

    Monk agent

Takuan Sōhō (沢庵 宗彭, 1573–1645) was a major figure in the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism.
Takuan Sōhō was born into a family of farmers in the town of Izushi, located in what was at that time called Tajima province (present-day Hyōgo Prefecture). At the age of 8 in 1581 young Takuan began his religious studies and 2 years later he entered a Buddhist monastery. By the age of 14 in 1587, Takuan started studying the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism under the tutelage of his sensei Shun-oku Soen.
By age 36 in 1608, Takuan was made abbot of the Daitoku-ji Temple in Kyoto, Japan. Unfortunately, Takuan's appointment was shortened as he left for a prolonged period of traveling. Throughout his journeys, Takuan raised and collected funds for the renovation of Daitoku-ji Temple and other Zen temples.

    Monk agent

Ishikawa Goemon (1558–1594) - (石川 五衛門 or 石川 五右衛門?, ?-1594) was a semi-legendary Japanese bandit hero who stole gold and valuables and gave them to the poor.Goemon is notable for being boiled alive in public after a failed assassination attempt on the civil war-era warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. A large iron kettle-shaped bathtub is now called a goemonburo ("Goemon bath").[1]
Goemon reputedly tried to drip poison from a thread into Oda Nobunaga's mouth through a hiding spot in the ceiling,[108] but many fanciful tales exist about Goemon, and this story cannot be confirmed.

    Ninja agent

Katō Danzō (加藤 段蔵?) was a famed 16th century ninja master during the Sengoku period Japan who was also known as Flying Katō (飛び加藤, Tobi Katō?).[1]Kenshin decided to test Danzō's abilities by challenging him to sneak into a certain castle and to retrieve a prized naginata (a sword in another version of this story) from one of his retainers, Naoe Kanetsugu. Danzō infiltrated Kanetsugu's heavily guarded castle and not only succeeding in stealing the naginata, but also captured a young servant girl. Kenshin then realized that Danzō would be a very useful ally and took him into his service. However, Kanetsugu plotted to kill Danzō (according to another version it was Kenshin himself who ordered his death, perceiving him to be too skillful and thus dangerous), forcing him to try to defect to Takeda Shingen, Kenshin's rival. Suspecting Danzō to be a double agent, Shingen however ordered him to be killed.[4] Danzō was captured by Takeda men and executed through decapitation.

    Ninja agent

Nōhime (濃姫?) also Kichō (帰蝶) or Lady/Princess Noh, was the wife of Oda Nobunaga, a major daimyo during the Sengoku period of Japanese history. Her proper name was Kichō, but since she came from Mino Province, she is most commonly referred to as Nōhime (Princess of Mino). She was renowned for her beauty and cleverness.
Nōhime's father was the daimyo Saitō Dōsan and her mother was known as Omi no Kata. Nōhime herself appears very little in any historical record, and there is not a lot of information on the dates of her birth or death; however, proposed dates for her birth fall between 1533–1535. Nohime was often believed to be a spy or assassin.

    Geisha agent

Luis Sotelo (September 6, 1574 – 1624) was a Franciscan friar who died as a martyr in Japan, in 1624, and was beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1867.
Sotelo was born in Sevilla, Spain, and studied at the University of Salamanca before entering the convent of "Calvario de los Hermanos Menores". He was sent, in 1600, to the Philippines, in order to take on the spiritual needs of the Japanese settlement of Dilao, until it was destroyed by Spanish forces, in 1608, after intense fighting.
In 1608, Pope Paul V authorized minor religious orders (Dominicans and Franciscans) to proselytize in Japan, heretofore the preserve of the Jesuits. Sotelo immediately went to Japan and took a leading role there.

    Missionary agent

Would any of the modders be interested in working on this when the game is released?

None of the people you posted in the first post played any important part in the Sengoku Jidai period. But i can assure you that we will include historic generals in the Sakura mod.

I realize this mod aims for complete historical accuracy and to eliminate fanciful elements and to a point I am with that, battlefield nija did exist but perhaps only as a few Hattori units, under Tokugawa of course and not as a seperate faction. Hero units should exist but they shouldnt be as strong as they are now, agents are to important to the game strategy and such forces did shape the Sengoku period thought they were hardly the work of a single agent. So here it is.

Perhaps I can persuade you, it really be a shame to only include the generals and leave out the possibility of unique agent and hero units. Historical is all good and all but what good is it if the mod isnt as fun as it can be?

You refer to the heroes, in a strict historical mod, they are antithesis, but in reality and fun, they are integral to the Sengoku period. To say they didnt play an important part is not so, they are more known for what they did then most generals of the period, and most important people influence the way things happen in a subtle way, it goes unrecorded in war history but thier fame lives on, so why focus only on war and its generals. Id rather have all the important character of the era featured. Having a hero sword unit, General's trait, or Agent to represent Munenori or Miyamoto is a good thing, famous ninja, monks, and kensei are part of period's history.

a few examples from the first post before I organized heroes, agents and generals

Munenori, was one of Tokugawa's most important advisors (trait), and later secret police (metsuke)

Shoud the Koga ninja clan, just be a generic ninja agent or should you include thier greatest Fuma Kotaro, it seems more accurate to me to include these famous ninja, by including Fuma as a agent.

Miyamoto, is the greatest Kensei, his disciples would be ideal for a Hero unit, his fame alone i could see attracting a following of elite swordsmen and he fought in several battles. When he killed Kojiro it was thought to be politcally motivated and he petitioned to serve Tokugawa in place of Munenori.

Takuan Soho, was a man of extreme influence, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takuan_S%C5%8Dh%C5%8D
this is what a monk agent represents.

I ask that you be mindful that the agent and heroes dont represent one individual but rather the leaders of such forces that shape diplomacy and influence war. As such they are important to a historical mod. for the sake of completeness. The most extreme example I can see is Musashi, who can be thought of only as a wandering duelist but wait..
Having a swordsmen of Miyamoto's fame would be a huge asset in war, he would attract skilled swordsmen under a Daimyo's banner, who would be trained by a true master. In game terms this is represented as a (Hero Sword Unit.)

This kind of thing is the essence of the game. To shape Japan in a way thats fun and within the possible, otherwise we all would be playing, Total War: The Tokugawa clan

Playabilty and fun is the most important part of a good mod, its got to be fun. Players who know the history of the Sengoku period will appreciate and want all of its personalities to be a part of the game experience!

I do like where you are going with this but indeed, many of them played no role in the Sengoku period, but instead flourished under the Tokugawa regime...as well many of them never served a true battlefield role....no matte rthough...it would still be nice to some some larger than life characters show up from time to time...hey I liked the Kensai

Tokugawa didn't technically exist as Tokugawa in Sengoku Jidai, if you're going that route.

In 1567, Motoyasu changed his name yet again, his new family name was Tokugawa and his given name was now Ieyasu. In so doing, he claimed descent from the Minamoto clan. No proof has actually been found for this claimed descent from Seiwa tennō, the 56th Emperor of Japan.[5]

    Just saying.

I swear some of these generals are wrong. I always thought Ranmaru Mori was Nobunaga's aid, along with Akechi Mitsuhide who later betrayed Nobunaga but Ranmaru was loyal to Nobunaga...

What id like to see is real, historical names represented in the game, giving more historical accuracy. Many of the most famous characters do not exist past the game timelines default starting years, maybe the game turns can be modded to be longer and then start at a later date? Id like to see the more famous and capable characters actually start with better traits. This would make a Great Mod!

Would love to see these famous generals in the game.

I have Tadakatsu, Kanetsugu and Naomasa in the current version. Hideyoshi will be in the next update, although I have a placeholder daimyo set up. Keiji, Masanori and, with some hopeful family tree editing, Yukimura should be in at some point. Katsuie is really the only one that doesn't fit.
