umm, actually modern wars were fought over ideas. look at the world war 2, it was fought cause of nazi idea, one nation who is on higher level. so as revolutions in russia, china and cuba, they were fought for idea of equal society, where's no hierarchy. so as war in balkans, bosnians' idea of their nation, serbian idea of great serbia, and croatian idea of great croatia.

medieval wars were fought for territories, there was no such nationalistic or idealistic wars, cause nationalism and ideas like communism, socialism, fascism nazism etc. are modern ones

Hmm, you know, that's actually a great idea. Quotes from the plethora of folk songs from the Marko epic cycle could actually be quite useful in the mod. Especially since they fit for at least two factions - both Serbs and Bulgarians have songs about him.
