Thread: Coward trait / give_trait command / "character not found" error

Default Coward trait / give_trait command / "character not found" error

I have already searched the forums extensively without success. I applied the described fix to the export_descr_character_traits.txt prior to loading the savegame just before my faction leader gets the "coward" trait (playing as Sparta when capturing Athens using auto resolve because there is no garrison besides a general unit).

I've been trying for half an hour now to use the give_trait command via console but it just won't work because I always get the "character not found error" no matter how I type the name. After that I tried to apply the trait to some other character, but regardless of which character I'm targeting, it never works, always the same error.

How, exactly, do you guys type the whole thing and is it by any chance necessary to somehow activate the cheats before they work?

Any help on this would be immensely welcome

It takes a while, but I promise you the names are all there. I struggled with these forever myself but it just took a lot of trial and error.

The Romans are the tricky ones to figure out because they repeat their names so often. Say for example your guy is Maximus Flavius Nepos...

    You have to try

give_trait "Maximus Flavius" (make sure there is a space after "trait" and also make sure to have quotations around the name. If that doesn't work then you generally have to go to "MaximusA Flavius", "MaximusA Flavius Nepos", "MaximusB Flavius", "MaximusB Flavius Nepos" and so on down to F or wherever the names stop. It's a tenuous process with the Romans. Also you sometimes have to put in a "_" in there, such as "MaximusA Flavis_Nepos" or "MaximusA_Flavius_Nepos", etc.

With other cultures they often have names like Alexander of Macedon or whatever. So the way to type those is usually like:

    give_trait "Beavis of_America"

There is a "names" file someplace in the translations directory, in contains all names and according translations which are the names shown ingame afterwards.
Sometimes however not even the official names work, I tried to give Publius Cornelius Scipio (Africanus) some military career traits since I've left him in a town for too long. Unfortunately not even the name given in the family tree file works (iirc PubliusA Scipio) :/
Now one of the most famous military commanders in history is governor of Genoa.

I've already studied the names files, e.g. my faction ruler's ingame name is "Agesipolis III of Sparta". In the files he is listed in the Sparta section as "Agesipolis_III" so I tried:

    "Agesipolis"
    "Agesipolis III"
    "Agesipolis_III"
    "Agesipolis III of Sparta"
    "Agesipolis_III of Sparta"
    "Agesipolis_III_of_Sparta"

None of them worked. I don't understand, do I have to try out ALL the names in the list; could his name be something completely different? That's about the only thing I haven't tried yet.

I have consulted all three names files, there is no other variant given.

Also, as I said, I tried to give my other generals traits - I looked all their names up too, but none of them worked, always "character not found".

Maybe someone could start a campaign as Sparta and try to give any of the four generals a trait via console and tell me if it worked and how?

Someone suggested to move the character out of the city, select him and type "give_trait this Brave 1" but that doesn't work for me either =/

Finally, a step forward! The console finally accepts the character name, RebelClub gave the right clue (+rep!), you have to:

type the underscores between the name and the number (if any) and between the "of" and the location (if any) but leave a blank space between those two. The correct form is: "Agesipolis_III of_Sparta"

Hopefully, this will help other people with the same problem.

For now, I am stuck with the next problem: The console doesn't accept the trait "Brave" now but I'm going to figure that one out eventually...

P.S.: The trait is "Brave1", no space and it's *not* optional to leave the number.

Oh, the joy! I had refused to continue my Sparta campaign with my generals being named cowards for no reason...

same problem here, in fact i posted a question about it but till now i got no reply. that freakin coward trait is so annoying i got like a half a dozen generals & admirals all with the same stupid Coward trait i made the give_trait "Brave1" cheat via console & although it removed the trait from the general's list the general's name & coward is still shown.. I hope this thing will get fixed soon cos its ruining half the fun..

The problem has only just started for me, every one of my military commanders is a coward in Dacia.

Is there a link to one of these hotfixes or is 2.2 out tomorrow?

I know it isn't game breaking like the Unit Shader CTD, but if it is an easy fix then it would be pleasantly convenient...

    Hotfix found, thank you anyway.

If anyone else reading here wants the fix, see post #51 of "XXXX" the coward thread. Will edit this with a link.

I didn't read through this thread since I'm rather tired, thus I don't know if the problem is already solved. Anyways if you still have trouble with the console command, then you should take a look in this guide: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...ighlight=cheat
