Chapter 7 - Great defeat and a grater Revenge
After the liberation of Bonnonia we wanted to capture Segesta, but there was a great Romani army, so we
decided to
conquer Arretium, the second largest city of the Republic, counting about 130 000 men. I
decided to march towards the city with my experienced 7 500 wariors. Near the city was a small Romani army, counting about 2 800 men, but
the army from the city, which had about 4 100 men helped them. But it was too easy for our men. Iaosatae were again
heroes. Infantry was ordered a frontal attack and Belenos and I, as
usual crushed their flanks. Only 30 Romani survived, but that was surely not enough to defend Arretium.
And then... The
greatest sack of one Romani city, after
the sack of Rome 130 years ago, under the leadership of our ancestor, Brennos, begun. Our wariors looted the city for whole five days. We have
exterminated or killed aproximately 100 000 foolish Romani! Brennos would be happy and proud if he could see this.
We gained 15 000 mnai from looting and destroying plenty of buildings in the city. We destroyed their stupid baracks, temple of some fool Jupiter, their goverment building, and very improtant their awful blacksmith. I took one "gladius", some stupid Romani sword and
decided to
practice a bit with my brother. But when he first time hit my sword with his, "gladius" broke! So I
decided to burn
the blacksmith and all Romani who were making "swords". We used that money for
development of our infrastructure in Gaul.
After that we stayed in Arretium for two weeks. Some Gauls from Segesta told
us they desperately
needed our help to crush the Romani, who
have been ruling our cousins like they are slaves for 8 years. They reported there are about 1 800 Romani. I attacked the town with my 8 500 wariors, including 800 Peltastai I hired. We had only 2 500 infantrymen, but I
believed we won't need more to defeat 1 600 Romani. But I noticed there were only 2 000 mercenaries, what was very unusual for this area. However we attacked and our spy managed to open the gates. And then we were absolutely shocked! There were another 18 000 Romani. It was 8 500 against 20 000, including Romani leader and 16 000 infantry. 15 000 their soldiers were mercenaries!
But Gauls never run! We fought for our brothers, for our freedom, for our honour! But it wasn't enough. Romani had nearly 3 times more men and 7 times more infantry. Our Iaosatae could not save the day. Romani attacked our infantry line and our cavalary, including me, Belenos and 800 Leuc Epos tried to flank the Romani. But we couldn't... So we let our infantry fight as much as they can and tried to protect the Iaosatae and other missiles. Romani ruler, called Avgvsts, whatever that means already attacked them and us, two brother angrily attacked that rubbuish and bloodthirsty slain him. But it could not change anything. Our men were crushed, but Belenos and I fought like
lions and with our 400
cavalrymen killed another 2 000 Romani. But when we saw this
lead to nowhere, and we can only die, we
decided to retreat, cursing Romani and promising them the blood Revenge! Only 860 Gauls survived the battle, but also 6 000 Romani were dead.
We were in a very bad situation after that. But we were not done! Now when we had
support of all Gallic tribes from Gaul, thousands of angry Gauls begun their march towards Southern Gaul (formerly called Cisalpine Gaul) in order to revenge their brothers. Also, about 4 000 men moved out of Massalia. Amminos marched towars Mediolanum just afted 800 Hoplitai were recruited to guard Massalia. But despite everything, Romani had a great advantage. They tried to use it. Their army that had 14 000, under the command of a stupid Romani commander, adopted by
the now dead Avgvsts beseiged Mediolanum, where
there were only 1 600 wariors. Their smaller, but high quality army attacked Arretium. Our
reinforcements came from Bonnonia and we utterly crushed the beseiging army. For that time, our brothers were heading towards Mediolanum. And Romani were still building rams. Belenos and I first moved to Bonnonia, so we could react if either Mediolanum or Arretium are attacked. After two weeks Romani attacked Arretium, and reinforcments were nearly after Mediolanum. Belenos and I made an agreement: I marched towards Mediolanum to join our men from Gaul and he was about to crush the siege of Arretium with the help of the troops from Bonnonia. I joined our powerful and brave army. Wariors
were eager for the battle and couldn't wait to kill as many Romani as possible. Our army had about 12 500 men and the Romani had about 2 000 more, what was nothing when compared with Segesta.
First, three armies merged into one. We marched towards the forest and tried to lure the Romani to attack us where the visibility was better. Iaosatae started to throw stones on them. Romani attacked them few times, but they ecaped and Romani didn't dare to attack our infantry.
Our men could not wait any more, they were angrier and angrier every second and they ran towards forest in order to destroy cowards under the flag of Romani. But our line wasn't equivalent with their, so they had a great advantage on our right flank. I
decided to anulate
(?) that using Iaosatae as a light infantry. They helped our line to hold a lot. And than my favourite part: I attacked Romani from behind with our Cuer Epos, hired by my brother Amminos, who could not come in time to fight. Romani started to rout, unit per unit. Their commander ran away in the early phase of battle.
Soon all of them were trying to escape, but we had no mercy. We were hunting them until the sunset, despite
the fact that we were very tired. I wanted to kill every single Roman that fought against us after Segesta, but I knew that will have to wait for few weeks or maybe months.
The final result was good - only 1 800 from 14 000 Romani survived, but also 5 500 fearless Gauls and Greeks were dead. But
most important - we revenged our brothers!
For that time, Belenos attacked Romani who had 1 650 elite Allies forces and 820 Principes and utterly crushed them, thanks to the brave Lugoae and his well-timed attacks behind the Romani lines. Belenos also did his best to hunt as many cowards as possible. It was an excellent victory, but it cost
the life
of 600 Gauls. The better part is 2 200 Romani were dead.
And than his army had an easier task - they had to defeat
a weaker Romani army,
and they were also reinforced by Motios,
a charismatic and optimistic Carnute I adopted after the liberation of Bonnonia. Iaosatae, hired by Motios and those Belenos
led killed 600 Hastati, so left flank easily fell after
cavalry attack from behind. After them, Principes were destroyed in the same manner and at last Italic Allies. Arretium was defended. Citizens, including Peltastai and Sotaroas whom I disbanded before were quite happy, as Romani made only 30% of popularity in this city, others were Gauls, Greeks and some Carthaginians.
Now situation is pretty good. Main Romani army is destroyed and our way to Segesta is clear.
But, something worries me:after the
loss of their land in Italy, Epeiros made a ceasfire with the Romani.
Good news
is there are few more children in our family, and our men are getting more and more succesfull in administration and trade.
