    I say we go with the "typical" western european fuedal system. At top would be king, go through the nobility, the non-nobility military (men-at-arms) and then the peasants at the bottom

    Let's get Feudal, and let Patronizing become Vassalage.
    Great Houses of the TWC, replicates Feudal Europe pretty well imho.
    Let the Imperator become the Pope, the only figure of central authority in western medieval europe :p
    Or maybe the Emperor, if he lists...

    My first choice would be Byzantine, but to compromise between West and East, how about we go with this place

    Venice!Probably the second most famous republic in history (behind Rome of course)

    I'm feeling better today, not as dizzy. I think we need to switch. And fuedal titles in my opinion would be the best. I don't like Byzantium because I think it is a half-assed change. We can't be afraid of change, no one wants to be part of a forum that stagnates and lives in the "past."

    QFT, its like our site does not want to put any effort into a change, we're too traditionalistic.

    But many don't want to forget the past either... A natural progression, perhaps, would be OK. Byzantium figures in this. It is also very romantic.

    A slow change is fine by me, start with Byzantium and move towards the English titles. I still think the Byzantium isn't going far enough. It like say your friend lives 100 miles away and you tell him you will drive 33 miles and he can drive the rest to meet you there. I just don't like the idea of it. Change is good.

    Oh come on imb, you're smarter than that. We aren't going to forget our past in any way by changing themes. The thing that keeps our history always alive is our longtime members who keep TWC what it is, as long as our most committed members stay, the past of TWC will never die.

    Thank you AP, there's a compliment in there... I've already made my position clear. We've started off due to ROME Total War and a nautral progression would be to develop along Byzantium lines as this is what happened in real life.

    I still stand by my choice of Medieval England. Most people asssociate the medieval times with Knights and stuff.

    Yep, Byzantinium just doesn't do it for me...besides, by the end of M2TW's timeframe, Constantinople has already fallen to the Ottomans...

    It's not feudal. I cannot, for example, force in anyway KHV to agree with me - indeed on this issue we disagree openly. Our current system works through trust only. There are few sanctions if the relationship breaks down etc.

    I would prefer :

    Basic Member = Footman/Serf/Peasant
    Civitate = Squire
    Patrican = Knight
    --------------------------
    Senatorii = Courtiers
    --------------------------
    Cohortes Praetoria = Marquis
    Quaestor = Count
    Praetor = Duke
    Consul = Lord Marshall
    Imperator = King

    I overall agree with Bavarian, but would just change some nomenclature:

    Basic Member = Peasant
    Civitate = Squire
    Patrician = Knight
    --------------------------
    Senatorii = Lord
    --------------------------
    Cohortes Praetoria = Marquis
    Quaestor = Count
    Praetor = Duke
    Consul = Lord Marshall
    Imperator = King

    and would press to incorporate "honorary badges", given to

    - Most Senior Member
    - Most Commited Non-Staff
    - Most Commited Staff
    - Rising Star (for a great noob posters, for example)
    - Great Debater

    On the issue of changing theme: as it is, the civitate system is and was always about trust and bonds between patron and patronee which roughly means feudalism, even if a "friendly" form of it. Also, the forum itself works in a feudalistic scheme, with the lower ranks under the control of a smaller caste which in turn is controlled by a smaller caste, etc...

    Changing from Roman to Medieval has no real impact on how government is handled, because it's a change of THEME not of SOUL or of ETHICS.

    The ToS and forum rules remain the same, even if we changed to a Zulu theme or a Aztec theme...

    No, but the feudal system was very much like the Roman patrongae system, the system which we presently copy.

    KHV, you hardly need protection! Though I could do with the prestige...

    No, but it is the fact that in our present system we are only copying the name, not the details.

    I fully agree with TBN about the ranks.

    About Manji's idea for honorary titles, I think we could continue the member and modder awards and use those to bestow the titles, which are a terrific idea.

    I say that Quaestor should become Sheriff (or seneschal) as both were adminstrative ranks.
