I know is such a necro, but I guess some of you would have this among the subscribed threads. There are two options for us to play. One is Vassal and the other is on either Dawn of War mod, which recently launched it's 0.8 version but still has a lot of work to go. Or in the dead as the emprah but might come back Fire in the Sky mod for Empire at War, which has been recently re-uploaded by his awesome creator (to download complete the captcha and press the green button that reads "Скачать" or simply use Jdownloader or MyPony and copy the link.
There has been a lot of mod attempts for BFG but none seen to has been ever completed, like this incredible awesome mod too for Empire at War called Universal War. And the Sins of a Solar empire mod that never quite took of the ground completely either. The warp seems to curse every captain daring to try taming it for our divertimento.
The only two mods that I know are in progress are the above Dawn of War total conversion mod and this little jewel for Startsector which to be honest its pretty awesome even for a RPG'esqe 2d game.
Baal's Editorial Note: In a world with so many, many space battles games in many genres and sub-genres (strategy games, tactics games, shoot'em up, rpg's..) it's interesting not to see a game of Battlefleet Gothic running around rampant. Like so many things, I believe Games Workshop have a gem in it's hands, only to be trowed away in favor of masturbatory fantasies of ultramarines by the hand of MW.... so sad. They even canceled the whole specialist games line this year, so yeah, it does look like a grimdark future for this, although rumor has it that they are doing this as a stage for a big relaunch of that line, I don't think so, and if they are, I fear they will disappear long before doing that thanks to their idiocy and the advancement of 3d printers. I think is time for them to make the full jump to digital media of their whole universe and start to make a living out of it instead of just being something peripheral for them.
Although I admit they might have been onto this already, given the amount of games they have been releasing like space marines and Space Hulk, and announcing lately like the Space Wolf, Armagedon,Revenge Something (don't recall the name)Storm of Vengeance, the adaptation to IOS of Space Hulk, and the crown of all them, Eternal Crusade: Warhammer 40000, set to be released by the end of 2015.
Yet, a space game of what's basically a space game with this awesome potential has yet to be even mentioned by GW. The reason? I can only speculate, but again, it seems they deem it as not worthy, careless of the millions of potential costumers that unlike hobbyists would buy an awesome looking space battles game, regardless of it's background.
