Unfortunately not. I'm not sure what I did to the startpos to make Syria impassible but I messed up somehow.
The height map only makes the map more bumpy to represent mountains. You could replace the height map with a completely black file and it would still work.

If anyone's interested here's a batch file to break up the ETW map into 64 pieces. Just rename it to stupid.bat (take the .txt off the end).
Files are named x-y, where x is the row and y is the column. You need to put stupid.exe, stupid.bat, world_.stpd, and world.stpi in the same folder. The script uses C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war\Stupid, but you can use Notepad to find/replace that with whatever folder you want

it's true but it's not sufficient
how it was said by uanime we need more
in fact if we want to add a mountain we need to add a block area in mountain_data of regions.esf file
this will make area covers by mountain impassable
but not only we also need to add a hole and an outline in region areas
we also have to be careful that mountain area is not split trough 2 or more regions
and so for each mountain, river or lake (considered sea regions)
but luckily we have coordinates of coastlines of all word
crux3D i don't know if you still around here, but if in the somehow you see this message, could you try to update your tool to S2TW? I know that the map as suffered several changes at the point of be 3D now, but all you tool is extracting is this:

Original post updated with a new version of stupid.exe. Now supports the Shogun 2 format. Also fixed some errors handling files within packfiles and a progressive mipmap darkening bug. Note that for Shogun 2 the supertexture contains the parchment map and a normal map, it does not affect the visible terrain as it did for Empire and Napoleon.

Maybe they hardcoded the map just in the beta? Either way, we just have to wait 11 days to find out.

Supertexture Tool and tutorial : Stupid from Crux3d
Hey I am trying to extract the colour bitmap from the FOTS supertexture. The only issue I am having is the colour bmp file keeps coming out staight black. They hide the cloth map (its what I am after) on the green channel.
I can use an outdated version of stupid to extract a preview:

but if throws and error, when I try and extract the full thing using the old version of stupid (not really that surprising)
The updated version of stupid though generates the following two images.

these are the preview versions but the full ones are the same just bigger. The problem is there is no cloth map hiding in any of the channels :: P. Especially the first since its nothing but black. XD
Any ideas?
