Default The Sengoku Jidai - a 1550 Japan IH

So gents, inspired by the coming of Shogun 2 and a look through this forum I've decided to go back to the roots of the TWC IH subforum - our first IH here was a Sengoku IH, after all. I'll also be including some new features in this IH...

    Without further ado...

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is spring of the year 1550, and Japan enters the 73rd year of its Sengoku ('Warring States') Period.

In central Japan, the Ashikaga Shoguns at Kyoto have been powerless puppets of the Kanrei (their supposed deputies) since the Onin War of 1467-77. The present Kanrei, Miyoshi Nagayoshi, presently controls not only the Shogunate, but also a sizable chunk of central Japan and even a strip of land on the island of Shikoku. The only daimyos who are remotely threatening to him now are his old allies, the severely weakened Hatakeyama and Yamana clans, as well as the Asai to the north.

In eastern Japan, order has completely collapsed as dozens of daimyos are actively at war with each other. The major players are the Takeda clan of Kai and the Uesugi clan of Echigo; their leaders, Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin, are peerless warriors whose rivalry is legendary, and who have already met in battle around the same area (Kawanakajima) three times. Other serious contenders for supremacy in the east are the Date of Mutsu province; their rivals, the Mogami of Dewa province; the Hojo of Kanto province; the Imagawa of Totomi province; and an up-and-coming daimyo of the Oda clan, Oda Nobunaga, based in Owari province.

In western Japan, two great clans have been fighting for as long as anyone has bothered to remember; the Amago of Izumo province, and the Ouchi of Suo province - until 1542, when the peaceful Ouchi Yoshitaka devoted his energies to the arts and culture and signed a truce with the Amago. Recently, Yoshitaka faces an open revolt led by one of his lieutenants and former friends, Sue Harukata, who wishes to go to war with the Amago enemy once again. In Amago territory, Amago Haruhisa exploited the break in the fighting to consolidate his powerbase and make preparations for the next war, which he intends to be the last one he has to fight in western Japan. Lastly, the Mori clan of Aki province has been watching these vicious wars from the sidelines, and while his plans have been frustrated by the Truce of 1542, Mori Motonari is still willing to patiently wait for both clans to exhaust themselves in another round of fighting before making his move to take over western Japan.

Lastly, on the island of Kyushu, Otomo Sorin has risen to power in Bungo and seeks to reverse his clan's fortunes - naturally, his expansionism is not welcome news to the Otomo's long-time rivals, the Shimazu and Ryuzoji clans. Jesuit missionaries from the west are also beginning to arrive in not-inconsiderable numbers in Japan, and the Otomo domains just happen to be their 'gateway' into the Land of the Rising Sun...while their proselytism is found annoying by most daimyos, others are seriously considering conversion to the Catholic faith, and both kinds of daimyos are deeply interested in the technology (especially firearms) these mysterious missionaries bring with them.

Default Re: The Sengoku Jidai - a 1550 Japan IH

    Character Rules:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Taking a leaf out of the TW games' books, and to make characters more useful, I've decided to include a character stat & trait system. Characters have the following four stats:

Command - Affects the chances of risky battlefield maneuvers, such as a quick redeployment in the heat of battle, a tactical retreat or an attempt to charge at and kill the enemy commander. Also affects your starting deployment zone (the higher your Command is, the better terrain & starting position you get) and your units' morale. Raised by winning battles.

Administration - Affects province income; each Admin star gives you an additional 5% from the province the Administrator character is presently in. Raised by staying in a province for extended periods of time.

Loyalty - The character's loyalty to your faction leader. Raised by gifts of land and/or money.

Influence - Affects negotiation efforts with NPCs such as the Shogun or independent daimyos, as well as your chances of bribing both NPCs and player-faction characters. Raised by successful negotiations.

In addition to stats, your characters may also pick up certain Traits as he wins/loses battles, manages a province, etc. Some traits are positive, others are negative, and still others can have a mix of positive and negative effects. Characters may have up to three Traits, and once they get a Trait, they cannot get rid of it.

We didn't exactly have a lot of prominent female military leaders at this time, so your princesses will be restricted to the Admin, Loyalty and Influence trait sets and cannot lead armies into battle.

Children will turn of age once they hit 14. However, they can be married off before that, although obviously they can't have kids until they're of age

    The Command Traits are:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Berserker - This character has a worrying tendency to see the 'red mist' and fly into either a screaming, frothing rage or a frighteningly quiet, almost tranquil state whenever he enters battle. In either case, when he does enter this 'berserker state', enemy soldiers know well enough to get out of his way. Reduces the morale of enemy troops.

Chivalrous - This character strictly adheres to the Bushido code; he will never look down on his allies, always treats his enemies with respect, will not flee from battle unless ordered and remains loyal to his betters in good times and bad. Naturally, his men are honored to have someone like him on their side. Improves the morale of your troops.

Coward - This character doesn't just lead from the rear, he bolts as soon as he feels his life is threatened and will take dishonorable surrender over an honorable death if escape is impossible. Few men would have any respect for such a fellow, and his soldiers are no exception. Reduces the morale of your troops.

Dirty Fighter - This man values victory over honor, and there is no level he will stoop to in order to get his triumph - whether it be repeatedly striking his opponent in the groin or holding his enemies' families hostage. His enemies know this, and dread facing such an unscrupulous fellow in battle; however, his own soldiers have little respect for such a dishonorable man. Reduces morale of both your troops and enemy troops.

Merciless - This man's cruelty borders on sociopathy, for he never shows enemy soldiers mercy - much less any respect to their commanders. Not bound by any code of honor, he is the kind of fellow who will cheerfully torture and execute prisoners and even insubordinate minions, and so not only do his opponents shiver at the mere mention of his name, but even his own men are too frightened of him to call him out on his bloody deeds. Reduces the morale of enemy troops.

Ruthless - This man cares nothing for the lives of his own men, he is perfectly fine with throwing them into a meatgrinder if he thinks he can win that way and will simply answer 'We have reserves,' if he is ever called out on it. The soldiers under his command dislike him for obvious reasons. Reduces morale of your own troops.

Valorous - This character does not shy away from danger and doesn't mind getting his hands dirty alongside his men, something his soldiers find inspiring. Improves the morale of your troops.

Natural Leader - This character was born to command armies and lead them to glory. +1 Command.

Naturally Incompetent Leader - This character was born to command armies - and lead them to disaster. -1 Command.

    The Admin traits are:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Architect - This character is a master builder, who makes even ordinary homes look like small mansions. -2 days for building projects in this man's province.

Bad Architect - This character is an incompetent builder, who should not be trusted with putting together a doghouse. +2 days for building projects in this man's province.

Corrupt - This slimy fellow regularly takes money out of the state treasury, and should not be trusted with managing a lemonade stand. -1 Admin star.

    Mathematician
    - This character is a brilliant figure when it comes to logic, space, transformations and numbers. +1 Admin star.

Trader - This character is a superb trader, and probably multilingual too. All trade agreements bring in 10% instead of 5%.

Teetotal - This character abhors all alcoholic drink and so is rarely invited to parties, where s/he tends to be rather boring. Nevertheless, completely abstaining from booze allows them to keep a sharp mind when it comes to administering the realm. +1 Administration, -1 Influence.

Tax Farmer - This character is particularly good at extracting taxes from the populace, something both the common man and the aristocrat can agree is a bad thing. +1 Administration, dice roll to decide whether or not Peasant Revolt breaks out in random province.

Lenient Tax Official - This character either doesn't care about his job, or is nice enough to let the people get off easy when it comes to taxes. While they are liked by the populace, they obviously tend to contribute less money to the treasury. -1 Administration, dice roll to reduce unrest in random province.

    The Loyalty traits are:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Austere - This character lives a Spartan life and does not appreciate most gifts. S/he will be harder to bribe than lesser men.

Disloyal - This character can break oaths of allegiance without even the slightest tinge of regret. -1 Loyalty.

Hedonist - This character lives a life of luxury, regularly surrounded by useless trinkets and fawning servants. S/he will be easier to bribe than greater men.

Loyal - Loyalty is a word this man lives by. +1 Loyalty.

    The Influence traits are:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Bad with Words - This character regularly says the worst possible thing at the worst times, and it is a wonder how s/he still has his head attached to his shoulders at times. -1 Influence, reduces chances of bribing a character.

    Good with Words
    - This character has a way with his words, always withholding any inform s/he needs to withhold and saying just what others want to hear at the right time. + 1 Influence, increases chances of bribing a character.

Handsome/Beautiful - This character can turn the head of anyone of the opposite sex s/he passes and instill deep jealousy and a feeling of inferiority in the others s/he meets. +1 Influence.

Hideous - It's a wonder this character hasn't been forced to wear a bag over his/her ugly face every time he goes out in public. -1 Influence.

    Silver Tongue -
This character can make the most outlandish proposals sound perfectly reasonable and easily convince others that s/he is right, no matter how utterly wrong s/he actually is. +1 Influence, increases chances of bribing characters.

Hard Drinker - This character likes his/her sake, and once s/he drinks enough of the stuff s/he becomes quite fun to hang around. However, drunkards obviously don't make good administrators. +1 Influence, -1 Administration.

Pious - This character publicly respects God/the gods and His/their servants. +1 Influence.

Sacrilegious - This character publicly spits on God/the gods and His/their servants. -1 Influence.

Characters obviously need to marry to have (legitimate) kids. You can either marry your characters to other factions' characters, gaining the women (with all their stats & traits) as your own character in that case and also providing the lucky groom with a Loyalty boost for marrying him into a prominent family; you will also have a chance to claim that family's domain if their faction leader dies without a legitimate heir. If you can't be bothered to wait/ask for a suitable bride/groom, you can simply have the character marry a generic noble from your realm, but this provides a useless extra char, no Loyalty bonus and no chance to claim another faction's throne.

You may randomly get children at the start of every turn; if you do get a new kid (gender also randomly determined), I'll announce it in the event thread.

    Political Rules:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The lucky, lucky man to hold the title of Seii Taishogun is effectively the Generalissimo and de facto ruler of Japan, with the ability to call upon every single daimyo in the country to either pay him tribute or contribute troops to his army. The Shogun can also brand any of his enemies an 'outlaw', meaning they and their domains are fair game for all the other daimyos, while also causing unrest in said domain (think a Crusade & excommunication on a Catholic faction in Medieval II).

The Kanrei is one of the Shogun's chief lieutenants. He holds power over one half of Japan (the Kyoto Kanrei is master of western Japan, the Kanto Kanrei is master of the east) and can demand the daimyos under his jurisdiction pay him tribute or donate troops to his army. The Kanrei cannot, however, brand anyone an outlaw like the Shogun.

Elections for both Kanrei offices are held every five years, with the western Daimyos able to vote for a Kyoto Kanrei and the eastern Daimyos voting for a Kanto Kanrei. Alternatively, if a Kanrei dies in office, an election for his replacement is to be held immediately.

The man controlling the Shogun will be able to order him to either mobilize the realm, force people to pay tribute to him or brand someone an outlaw. However, the Shogun may decide to rebel if pushed too hard, in which case he can go from being your best (albeit reluctant) ally to an extremely dangerous enemy.

    Economic Rules:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Every province you hold will contribute 15% to your economy every turn.

You can loot captured provinces for a quick 25% bonus, but the province will be damaged and only contribute 5% to your economy for the next 3 turns.

Vassals will pay 1/2 of their income every turn (count the # of provinces they have, multiplied by 5 and divided by 2). You can ask them to pay 3/4 instead, but that will tremendously reduce their loyalty to you and may even cause them to revolt. Vassals are also automatically allied to you, and so will also fight on your side in wars unless you annoy them enough that they decide to sit that round out.

You can force enemy clans to pay any amount of % for any number of turns as tribute.

You'll also get 5% per trade agreement. You can also initiate trade agreements to buy Teppos from other clans.

One vital resource in this game is the Teppo or Japanese arquebus. For every unit of teppos you own, you can train four regiments of Teppo Ashigaru. To obtain more Teppos, you can either buy them from Portuguese traders at 20% per unit, or trade with other clans. (or defeat them in battle and take their Teppos, that works too)

There are three types of buildings you can construct in each province (only 1 building/province):

Teppo Factory - A stinking, smoke-filled factory where native teppos are manufactured. Produces two batches of teppos per turn. 25%, ten days.
Buddhist Temple - A Buddhist temple, obviously. Allows recruitment of Sohei units. 15%, four days.
Christian Church - A Christian church, obviously. Allows recruitment of Portuguese Mercenaries and Kiba Kuge. 15%, four days.
Tavern - At night, the local tavern can be a gathering place for the more dangerous elements of society. Allows recruitment of Ninja, Kensei and Ronin. 15%, four days.

    Military Rules:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
You may recruit the following units in SJ:

Jige-Yari - 2%, 1 day, 6,000 men/unit - Peasant militia with no training and only a short yari spear for protection. While they make good cannon fodder and can tie up enemy units at chokepoints, sending them up against veterans, heavy cavalry or, even worse, samurai will just result in a lot of peasants becoming widows at the end of the day.

Yari Ashigaru - 4%, 3 days, 5,000 men/unit - Infantry conscripts armed with the yari, a Japanese spear with varying length (some are as long as 20 feet or 6 meters, though most are only about 3 meters long). They make good anti-cavalry units, but being conscripts should not be relied on to turn the tide of battle or to survive a battle with samurai.

Yumi Ashigaru - 4%, 3 days, 5,000 men/unit - Infantry conscripts armed with the yumi, an asymmetrical Japanese bow usually about 2 m in length. They will be your basic ranged unit, and while they can turn most enemy soldiers into pincushions with their stinging arrows, they should be kept well away from the front line. 4%, 5,000 men/unit.

Kodachi Ashigaru - 4%, 3 days, 5,000 men/unit - Infantry conscripts armed with the kodachi, a Japanese sword too short to be considered a katana but too long to qualify as a dagger. They can handle themselves in close combat against anything but samurai.

Teppo Ashigaru - 5%, 3 days, 5,000 men/unit, requires Teppo -Infantry conscripts armed with the teppo, a Japanese arquebus. While their firearms can punch through even the toughest samurai armor and turn unprotected heads into a pink mist, they are inaccurate except at close range and so should fire in volleys, and it doesn't help that like Yumi Ashigaru they are helpless in close quarters either.

Ninja - 14%, 5 days, 100 men/unit - Covert agents now serving as battlefield assassins, able to hide anywhere and use various tools (from wires for strangling, to daggers for slashing throats, to metsubishi or 'black eggs' for blinding opponents) to kill your enemies before they even realize they're under attack. However, ninjas are not flying supermen, and should never be deployed for open combat - they are best used for killing enemy commanders or in skirmishes.

Ronin - 8%, 4 days, 1,500 men/unit - Masterless, disgraced samurai armed with the katana now serving as mercenaries, sometimes seeking to regain their place in society but usually just trying to make a living doing what they do best. While they are not as skilled as proper samurai, they are cheaper and faster to train, and can be useful if you don't have the money or the time to raise units of proper samurai. You need a Tavern to hire them.

Yumi Ronin - 8%, 4 days, 1,200 men/unit - Masterless, disgraced samurai armed with the yumi bow and the katana now serving as mercenaries, sometimes seeking to regain their place in society but usually just trying to make a living doing what they do best. While they are not as skilled as proper samurai, they are cheaper and faster to train, and can be useful if you don't have the money or the time to raise units of proper samurai. You need a Tavern to hire them.

Hatamoto - 12%, 5 days, 1,000 men/unit - Samurai fighting on foot with the famous katana. These well-armored and highly trained men are truly warriors without peer, capable of cutting everyone to ribbons except other samurai.

Yumi Hatamoto - 12%, 5 days, 1,000 men/unit - Samurai fighting on foot with the yumi bow and the famous katana. These well-armored and highly trained men are truly warriors without peer, despite being archers first and foremost they can still hold their own in close quarters.

Kiba Ashigaru - 8%, 4 days, 2,500 men/unit - Lightly-armored mounted ashigaru armed with yari lances and the tachi (a Japanese saber). They make for good shock cavalry and can mount a powerful charge with their lances, but are not particularly good at prolonged melees and will be cut to ribbons if they ever have the misfortune to go up against samurai.

Kiba Hatamoto - 15%, 7 days, 1,000 men/unit - Mounted samurai armed with a yari lance and the famous katana. These warriors are heavily armored, highly trained and highly disciplined, they are truly men without peer and can make mincemeat out of everything short of other samurai.

Kiba Kyuuhei - 15%, 7 days, 1,000 men/unit - Mounted samurai armed with a yumi bow and the famous katana. These warriors are heavily armored, highly trained and highly disciplined, they are truly men without peer and despite being ranged troops, they can hold their own in close quarters.

Kensei - 25%, 10 days, 100 men/unit - The elite of the elite, Kensei ('sword saints') are the few mighty samurai who have established themselves as the best swordsmen in all of Japan, and whose deeds and swords will soon become the stuff of legend. Despite their small numbers, their skill and equipment is so great that they can take on small armies with only limited support, and not even the ordinary samurai are a match for them save in large numbers. The presence of such heroes in their ranks also provides a morale boost to your troops. You may only have one unit of Kensei at any time, and they can only be recruited once you have built a Tavern.

The following units can only be purchased from a Buddhist Temple:

Sohei - 14%, 5 days, 1,000 men/unit - Warrior monks armed with the naginata (similar to a European glaive). Highly disciplined and utterly merciless on the field of battle, the Sohei make for excellent shock infantry and frighten enemy units with their mere presence, though they should not be expected to survive a protracted melee due to their relatively light armor. The length of their weapons also provides them with some measure of protection against cavalry.

Yumi Sohei - 14%, 5 days, 1,000 men/unit - Warrior monks armed with the yumi bow and a kodachi sword. Highly disciplined and utterly merciless on the field of battle, these Sohei are superb archers and can handle themselves in melee, although like their naginata-armed comrades they should not be left in close quarters for too long due to their light armor. The length of their weapons also provides them with some measure of protection against cavalry.

The following units can only be purchased from a Christian Church:

Portuguese Mercenaries - 12%, 5 days, 1,000 men/unit - European soldiers of fortune who are crack shots with a musket. They are highly disciplined ranged units whose fire is more accurate and even more deadly than that of the Teppo Ashigaru, but who are still vulnerable in close quarters. Unlike Teppo Ashigaru, they bring their own muskets to battle and so do not require Teppos to train.

Kiba Kuge - 14%, 6 days, 1,000 men/unit -Nobles who have converted to Christianity and now ride to battle in the style of European cavalry, wearing medium armor and armed with two wheel-lock pistols and a tachi saber. They are well-disciplined and well-trained soldiers who move at half-gallop towards their enemies, fire their two pistols as they approach and finally break out the sabers before charging home. While they are good melee fighters and shock cavalry, the samurai still outclass them.

The following can only be built with a Teppo Factory:

Tetsuho - 20%, 6 days, 20 cannons/unit - Mighty heavy artillery that can reduce castle walls to rubble with a sustained bombardment and blow enemy formations away on the battlefield, but are sluggish and especially vulnerable to enemy cavalry.

Also, 3 types of ships (all ships come in groups of 15):

Shuinsen - 5%, 4 days - Armed merchant ships that trade armor and firepower for speed and maneuverability. Can carry only one land unit.
Atakebune - 10%, 8 days - Medium warships with much more firepower than the shuinsen, but which are still faster than the infamous tekkosen. Can carry three land units.
Tekkosen - 20%, 14 days - Massive warships boasting an impressive arsenal of various cannons and iron plating. However, they are extremely slow and limited to coastal operations. Can carry five land units.

Upkeep will always be 1/2 of your units' original cost.

Battles will be fought in the classic style - I'll put up a map and troop strengths, you are to send in your orders by PM and hopefully I'll have the results up in a day or two at worst. Please, please include a map showing your troop deployments and movements, it would make my life so much easier

If both parties wish it, they can have their character personally enter combat and do some RP while the battle rages. In this case, their conflict will play out much like an IH RPG (such as TLW), although I still require orders from the players for the overall battle.

when the union's inspiration through the worker's blood shall run,
there can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun,
yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one?
but the union makes us strong.
