Default Thera: Legacy of the Great Torment: an Alternate-History IH(Waiting for people to make Faction Threads)

That's right, I decided to do an IH for the THERA mod for Medieval 2: Total War. I personally am a big fan of this mod and I know several of my colleagues on TWC(namely Dan the Man and The Holy Pilgrim) are also huge fans. Therefore I have taken it upon myself to make this IH. Enjoy!

    A map of Thera, c. 222 S.T.

Spoiler for: Legacy of the Great Torment
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Thera was a world much like the one we know, a land of vast forests and wind swept grass lands, wide deserts covered in golden sands and snowcapped mountains. Great trade fleets ferried their precious cargos across the length and breath of the great oceans. That was until one fateful day 222 years ago, a day when great natural calamities were unleashed and the world known as Thera was broken asunder. A day when entire generations were lost. A day when histories ceased and life was changed forever, a day when the dead out numbered the living. Terror in untold portions now stalked the land of Thera; it is said on this day the cries of pain and fear could be heard to echo across the heavens.

What exactly happened to cause these calamities is not clear; theories were thick in the air as to why these calamities had struck Thera, priests slaughtered animals and willing, or not, human sacrifices to determine why the Gods had turned on them. Blood ran in great rivers from the temple doors even as the wailing holy men were crushed as the temples fell to powerful earthquakes. Churches were packed as the Christian peoples of Thera sought shelter from the wild storms that rolled across the lands, only to find these buildings offered no protection as roofs were ripped away and wild winds tore people into the swirling maelstrom above. Each culture describes the causes and the effects within their own cultural and belief frameworks striving to provide answers for their leaders and the terrified population.

What is clear is that the planet suffered earthquakes, entire cities swallowed by the heaving ground, volcanic eruptions, an almost worldwide tidal wave, thousands perished at sea as ships disappeared without a trace, bodies littered the coast line for weeks to come, all with the same expression twisted on their faces, terror, pure terror. Huge wild fires ripped across many lands, a ruddy glow painting the skies of Thera at night and smoke so thick it blocked the sun for days. There were reports of fiery objects seen in the skies, causing more mass hysteria amongst the many peoples of Thera. This day became known universally as the 'Great Torment'.

In the years following the normal tidal and seasonal patterns became erratic. Many regions suffered great storms, lightning would tear apart the land and thunder rumbled so loud some went mad as the sound would not cease. The storms lasted weeks, months and in some areas years. The effects were so great that most people believed that this was truly the end of time. Almost every culture reset their calenders to mark these world changing disasters.

This lasted for over a century and the population of Thera was decimated, cities became tombs for lost kingdoms. Many formerly great nations fell, as starvation and disease ravaged the lands. Some nations locked their borders in an attempt to safeguard what they had, some nations looked to their gods for salvation, others turned to science.

It is now 222 years since the day of the 'Great Torment'. Many cultures believe this to be an auspicious date for a myriad different reasons, the reoccuring nature of the date, the alignment of the stars, the return of the herds, or simply because they feel strong again. The Legacy of the Great Torment is a world inhabitied by many small nations which have been forced to develop in near isolation, a world of large desolate, depopulated lands, which are ripe for development by a wise and powerful leader. Are you such a leader ....... .

It is time to sound the horn, it is time to call your people too war. Raise your banners and sharpen your sword for the land of Thera is ready for the taking, stand up and rewrite the history of Thera.........

    Kingdom of Avalon:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Defenders of the Grail

Historic Background: The Kingdom of Avalon was founded by a band of pious knights seeking to protect the Christian people from their pagan neighbours. Whilst flag of this kingdom carries the a representation of the Holy Grail, but the army always fights under the Lion banner to honour the memory of the original 'Knights of Avalon'. The land is governed by a king and his table of ministers, who are bound by the Arthurian laws to protect both the rights of the serfs as well as the privileges of the nobility. The 'Holy Grail' has been held by the Avalon bloodline for the past century, and legend says if the Grail was ever lost, Avalon would sink into the sea.

Present Situation: Avalon was damaged by 'The Great Torment', even though their lands swelled with the addition of the Brymaris region on the Gaelic isle of Tethra, after the local Christians sought protection following the death of their of their own King. The Grand Inquisitor also gave sovereignty of the county of Cheshire to Avalon in a diplomatic agreement, where Avalon pledged to support any future crusades the Inquisition may call.

    Royaume des Bons Chevaliers
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Flower of Chivalry

Historic Background: The Royaume des Bons Chevaliers is ruled by the Meravangi. They claim to have a noble lineage stretching back over a thousand years and see themselves as the very vision of the chivalric code. Their society is still run along traditional feudal lines. In this system the King gives land to members of the nobility, in return the barons pay tribune and provide military assistance to the King. The Barons have total control over both the land and the people within their provenices, and therefore their serfs are worked hard and long. This results in a society which is deeply divided and often it takes a war or threat of invasion to bring the people and their nobility together. Kings have used this ploy in the past, but it is always an dangerous and expensive stratagem..

Present Situation: The Royaume des Bons Chevaliers suffered during the 'The Great Torment', her people suffer plagues, and much misery. Many believed this was a curse from God and turned their backs on the church, and so rose the Vexille families, as they became known. Many provinces then rebelled against their barons and many members of the nobility were killed. Her lands on the Iberia mainland have been reduced to a single province, and on the Europa landmass the Medici and Vexille families have lead a large scale revolt, thus only two regions remain under Bons Chevalier control.

    Men of Valhalla:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    A Cloak of Flesh

Historic Background: During the Great Torment, the Norse lands suffered almost continuous winters. With the crops and livestock ravaged, the people began to die. Infighting broke out between the different tribes as resources became scarce and the old Norse kingdoms collapsed. Many ambitious warlords trying to fill this void, but could never hold together the different Jarls long enough to establish a viable kingdom.

It took a ferocious, bloodthirsty warrior to finally achieve this goal, his name has Rothgaard Bluetooth. In order to impose his will over the other tribes he lead a lightening campagain against the neighbouring region of Elsadør. He had all the nobles executed in the most horrific ways, he then had them skinned, and had a cloak made from theses skins. This he wore to a grand gathering of the tribes. There he offered generous terms to the neighbouring tribes, if they swore allegiance. He also warned that if they chose not to align themselves with the Men of Valhalla, he had many battle hardened Jarls, who also needed new cloaks.

Present Situation: Kong Rothgaard rules over the lands of the Norselund. While Prins Beowulf has taken an army of brave Norsemen in their dragon ships, across the seas to the dark lands of the west. There they have built the settlement of Vinland, and the stronghold, known as Odin's Gate. The lands of the Skraelings offer great opportunities, and whilst some of the natives have been happy to join the forces of Valhalla, some have proved troublesome, warlike, and deadly. On the Norselund there are still threats to the security of Valhalla. The pagan hunting Teutons had landed and formed a stronghold on the southern shore, and to the far east the City of Kozlov and the ambitious Wotan seem to be expanding their lands.

    Povos da Hispania:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Between Cross and Crescent

Historic Background: For many centuries the lands of the Hispanic tribes were populated by people of many religions. Pagan people lived happily along side the followers of both the cross and the crescent, free to live and pray however they wished. But then came the 'The Great Torment', the Grand Inquisitor blamed the plight on the presence of infidels on gods land. The Christians sought pagan and Muslim blood to appease their god, and so the the pagan tribes had to unify if they were to withstand the expected onslaught.

A brave warrior rose from the council of elders and promised the people, that no more would he allow the Christians to slaughter his people. His name was Vaasco de Sousa and he would be the saviour of all Hispanic Pagans. The other pagans tribes quickly joined him, and he fought off the the Christians to the north. No sooner was this threat contained, when the men on camels began to encroach from the west, it took many years of skirmishing before an uneasy peace was reached.

Present Situation: The Hispanic Tribes control regions in south east Ibellica, including the mighty Castelo de Sousa. The peace with the northern Christians and western Muslims is still tentative, and they must be closely watched. For the moment they seem keener to fight each other, but the Hispanic lands would make a good base for each of them to attack the other. To the south a new threat has arrived in the form of 'Lord' Greystoke and his pirates. They have made their base on an island to the south, building a sizeable fortress. This has become a magnet for villains and mercenaries, not the kind of neighbours one would choose, given a choice.

    Warriors of Kukalcan:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Historic Background: During 'The Great Torment' Mesocala (the meso landmass) was rocked by earthquakes as the fire-mountains on Incata Island roared and belched fire and rock into the sky's, blotting out the light from the mighty sun god. This was believed to be caused by the Kukulcan, breaking the bonds that had held him in the centre of the world, since he lost the great battle against the Sun God in the time of creation.

Many people believed the Sun God, Huitzil had abandoned the people because they allowed the pale skins to enter the sacred lands and trade their evil goods. Militant warriors from the peoples of the Paynál and Sycorax joined together in the blessed lands near Akator, to found a new people, and to build their strength, so they might scrouge the lands of the pale men.

If they were to succeed they needed the help of the greatest deities, and since the Sun God had turned his back on the people, this new nation pledged allegiance to the new power in the heavens. They dedicated themselves to the Kukulcan, the quetzal-feathered serpent god.

Present Situation: The Warriors of Kukulcan have now established a viable kingdom and now they are poised to strike out and increase their influence both on Mesomecala, and on the dark lands across the sea. Votan of the Kukulcan has vowed to take the fight to the home of the pale skins. This will not be easy for the pale men cover themselves in metal skins and ride the sweating beasts, but the scale of the task will only make the victory all the more impressive. Votan has pledged that the Kukulcan will be honoured by the offering of a sea of pale skin blood.

    Faustian Reich:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Historic Background: The plagues that gripped Ibellica and Europa during 'The Great Torment' decimated the Germanic peoples. They were at the time ruled by a council of nobles known as the Otterbach-Anschluss. However in times of great peril, it often takes a great man to step forward and shoulder the burden of saving his nation. Karl Faust was such a man.

The Grand Inquisitor blamed the plagues on the anger of God, an anger caused by the close presence of pagan and Muslim peoples. So the Otterbach-Anschluss lead armies against the Hispanics and Tahar kingdoms, the result of these wars was stalemate and the death of many great Germanic noble bloodlines. Karl Faust lead a rebellion and eliminated every member of the Anschluss Council. While the Otterbach had been a slave to the whims of the Grand Inquisitor, Faust declared he would allow learned men to explore the new sciences in a bid to find cures for the great plagues. This was the first step that would turn the new Faustian Reich into a potential 'renaissance' superpower.

Present Situation: The 'renaissance' as is has been known, has seen the Faustian Reich grow in strength and influence. Many great inventors are working on new wonder weapons and as they become viable weapons they could make the new professional armies a truly formidable war machine. From a base on northern Ibeliica, an armed mission has reached Mesomecala, and has gained a tentative foothold on the coast. These new lands boast great resources in the form of foods, furs, and gold. The native peoples are a mix of very friendly and dangerously hostile. The real decision now is whether to use the resources of the Reich in pursing the development of a colonial meso empire, or if those resources would be better used in expanding the Reich's influence closer to home.

    Paynal Triple Alliance:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The Will of the Sun God

Historic Background: Once the Empire of the Paynál controlled all but the cold north lands of Mesomecala (the meso land mass). Then the pale ones came, and the people were allowed to trade with the strangers. Soon the people fell sickly, blighted by a plague. The great shamans were consulted and they told how the Sun God, Huitzil was displeased by the presence of the pale men and their evil ways.

Just as the Great Paynál was trying to decide on how best to rid the lands of the pale men, the fire mountains roared. The Sun God disappeared for nearly a full year, the crops failed, many people died, and many fled their villages and towns to join the Kukulcan. The pale men disappeared and for many cycles they not seen again.

Present Situation: Two hundred cycles after the mountains roared Huitzil has returned, to smile on the people of the Paynál. The lands are again green and providing food. It is now possible for the Empire to consider expansion, to consider reclaiming the lands that slipped from their grasp during 'The Great Torment'. But the Pale skinned demons have again returned to the shores of Mesocala. If Huitzil is not to be angered again, two things are clearly required, the cleansing of the lands polluted by the pale men, and the crushing of the Kukulcan. The order in which these are to done, is the real question.

    Men of Wotan:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Warriors of the Wotan to Arms!

Historic Background: The Wotan are a hardy people from the far north. There hard existence has made them tough and resilient. They have long traded with many far away lands, taking not only goods but wisdom from these alien cultures. The City of Kozlov being the beating heart of the bear that is Wotan, developed a culture of acceptance to one and all. Then came 'The Great Torment' and the age of long winters. As with most cultures when disaster strikes, and the cause is not apparent, the people blame the strangers. And in Koslov this is what happened on a grim scale. When the Great Tzar Volchok died of a fever, the people rioted and attacked the merchant quarter of the city. The streets ran red, as the foreign merchants were attacked and killed. The reputation of the Wotan has been forever smeared by these events.

Present Situation: With the loss of the merchant links, Wotan needs to transform into a military power, if their society is to survive. The Men of Valhalla are making worrying noises to the west, and news from the south is that the chivalric nations are attacking many pagan lands. Wotan must carefully watch both these threats.

    Romuli Empire:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    The Constant Empire

Historic Background: The Empire of Romuli has a violent foundation legend, one that mirrors much of the political and military infighting that happens between the great families. The empire was first established by Romulus Caesar who murdered his brother Remus for trying to usurp the crown of the fledgling empire. Since then all rulers of the Romuli have acclaimed themselves Caesar. The patrician families of the Romuli claim descent from the adventurers, exiles and warriors Romulus recruited to help establish his city. Alongside the patrician families, the Greco Nobles also wield some power, but thy will never be considered true Romuli. The capital city, Constantium, is know as the constant city, for it has never left the control of the Romuli, since its founding, in the mists of the ancient times. For a while the empire attempted a greco style democratic form of government. A senate from the patrician families controlled the running of the empire, on behalf of Caesar. But it was under their rule that the crops failed and the people went hungry. The people believed that the Gods were angered by this imported form of governance. There were many riots and much civic disorder. The plebs didn't realise this was the beginning of 'The Great Torment'.

When 'The Great Torment' began, the settlements close to Constantium began to fall to disease and plague. At this time the empire was lead by Nero Caesar, in order to quell the plebs concerns he retook direct control of the empire. He was a clever but cruel ruler, and he knew the heart of the empire must be protected from the ravages of 'The Great Torment'. He ordered that every settlement that fell to the plagues must be razed to the ground and all the inhabitants must be slain. Whilst these actions were extreme, they were also successful. The slaughter was only halted at the battle of Demos, where an entire Romuli army was destoryed by a rag tag force of Uruks and gladiators. And so the Romuli closed their gates to all foreign influences, for two centuries they remained in defensive isolation. During this time they concentrated on developing new civil and military systems, knowing one day the Torment would abeit, and on that day they must be ready, to send forth the Legions.

Present Situation: Gaius Caesar has declared it is time to expand into the land of the barbarians. The armies have been placed on a war footing, and new legions have been raised. The world beyond the borders is a unfamiliar place, due to the self imposed period of isolation. The Romuli have no idea what type of enemy they are likely to encounter.

    Barka Sultanate:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Warriors of Jihad

Historic Background: The Barka Sultanate is an ancient and pious kingdom. As followers of the crescent, they have often carried the battle to the infidel. Whenever the Christian attempted to gain control of Eden (the place where life first began, according to the followers of both the crescent and the cross) it was the forces of the Barka that repelled them. Then came the 'The Great Torment' For three generations the rains failed to come, the crops and the livestock withered and died. Unable to feed themselves, soon the people died too. For over a century the people of the Barka clung on, bearly able to survive on what the lands could provide. But by careful managment and pious prayers the people did survive. Then as the lands began to recover, that cursed Christian crusader, Baldwin de Ibellin arrived with an army of jackal heathens. For twenty years they fought for the possession of Eden. Many times control of the city swapped hands, but neither side was able to solidify their hold. As the conflict continued, both sides struggled to replace the men they lost in battle, and slowly they ground each other into stalemate.

Present Situation: The crusaders are locked into the city of Eden, and their coastal port. But the possession of the most holy of places, is still a great insult to all followers of the crescent. The Sultan knows that all the Islamic world looks to him to wipe away this insult. However the Sultanate has not yet fully recovered from the torment, and it would be better to wait and build, rather than take the risk of total complete destruction if they were to attack and fail. These are the two considerations that must be weighed.

    Gaelic Nation:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Unification Of the Isle

Historic Background: The Gaelic isle or Tethra to give it its gaelic name, has always been a land of dispute and bloodshed. The main tribal groups Gaelic, Celt and Pict constantly warred against one another in a bid to dominate the landmass. As the majority of the Celtic tribes converted to the Christian cross, they began to gain assistance from the chivalric kingdoms of Europa, and for a while they looked likely to finally gain control of the entire isle. This threat was real enough to finally force the Pict and the Gaelic to join forces. Not long after this union was ratified the Celtic forces were decimated by a plague, 'The Great Torment' has arrived.

At first the newly formed Union of Gaelic Nations took this to be a sign that the Pagan Gods were pleased, and had chosen to destroy their newly converted enemies. Indeed many Celtic peoples re-converted back to paganism and joined the Gaelic Nations. Then came the age of long winters, and the people suffered great hardships as crops and livestock died. This weakened the Union and many clan leaders broke away and declared their regions as independent kingdoms, although they were more like thiefdoms.

Present Situation: The Gaelic Nations now have a leader cast from the hardest iron, and he has promised to gain dominion over the Isle. He is Patrick O'Neill, and he is from a bloodline that claims lineage to Cuchulainn himself. The western Celtic lands have invited the Christian dogs of Avalon to rule over them, and this chivalric presence on the Isle is a real threat to the aspirations of the O'Neill. They must be removed, however the best way to achieve this is not clear. Should the rebel regions first be conquered, so they can provide wealth and men, to aid in the war against the Christians. Or should the Avalon be attacked immediately before they can establish a firm foothold on the lands.

    Lao Che Khanate:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    The Return of the Herds

Historic Background: The Steppe was populated by many tribes, some were farmers, most were nomadic herders. Since the time of the beginning, the great herds have crossed the plains, and the nomadic tribes have followed them, living off their produce. In harsh times, when the herds were thin, conflict would breakout between the tribes for the access to the herds. This conflict would often take the form of masses of horse archers peppering each other with arrows until one side broke and fled. These occurrences were rare as the herds were large, and there was enough for all. The tribes were very often inter-related through diplomatic marriages, alliances (although often tentative) were developed. Then came 'The Great Torment' and the snows failed to melt even in the summers. The herds could find no grass, and died on their thousands.

And so the conflicts began, tribe against tribe, family against family. The conflicts became so intense that soon there were few peoples left on the steppe, and those that remained had to come together if they were to survive. The remaining elders called a grand council, and all the tribes sent their best warriors to represent their respective tribes. A series of tournaments were held to decide the greatest of all the champions. The only tribe whose champion was also their headman was the Tribe of the 'Che'. Their head man was Lao Che. During the tournaments he swept all the other champions aside, besting them on horse, on foot, with the bow and with the sword. Lao Che was crowned Great Khan, and the new kingdom would carry his name, The Lao Che Khanate.

Present Situation: The Khanate migrated across the lands of the Sumari steppe, through the mountains into the steppe lands of Huang Chuan. It has managed to bring her people through the Torment, through wise use of resources, and improvements to the limited farming on the Steppe. The Great Herds are returning to their former glories, cattle, horse and elephants are again traversing the harsh plains of the steppe. The renewal of the herds has filled the people with hope, and they believe the spirits are urging them onwards to greater things. The Khan, now with greater finances available, has begun to develop the gifted horse archers of the tribes, into a professional standing armies. One of these armies has sailed north into the lands of the meso, and has established a province on this strange new land. The shaman tell that this land too has great herds, and that it is the destiny of the Lao Che become the masters of these herds also.

    Tahar Caliphate:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Warriors of Camel and Elephant

Historic Background: The south west of Ibellica is a region of desert and scrubland, inhabited by numerous nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes. These peoples had long fought against a centrally administered form of rule. The Tushkan and Numari people occupy the desert regions and are highly independent.

The coastal regions on the west coast were the most settled of the tribes, trading with regions on Mesomecala (the meso land mass), as well as Ibellica. Whenever the regions faced foreign threats the tribes would, for a time unite, under whichever tribe was the strongest at the time. But once the invaders were repelled, infighting and squabbling would again split the tribal unity apart.

With 'The Great Torment' came a time of hardship, the rains failed to come, and the land cracked and groaned as though demons from below were trying to free themselves. Then the Christians launched attacks from the north, blaming the calamities upon the followers of the crescent. A great general rose to prominence during these wars, his name was Tahar Tahar. After leading the the armies against the Christians, Tahar Tahar set to work developing a central government of state. He organised royal granaries so that the limited harvests could be be equally distributed amongst all the tribes. In return for this grain, each tribe provided a military levy to the new national army, so that the people would never again be taken by surprise, when the Christians attacked.

Present Situation: The Infrastructure of the Tahar Sultanate has risen to a point where they can now think of expansion beyond the old borders. Already a new settlement has been gained on Mesomecala, and whilst the relations with the native peoples are somewhat unpredictable, the settlement is secure. The learned men are developing new technologies and these will at last allow the armies of Tahar to truly challenge the Christians for dominance over all of Ibellica.

    Grand Duchy of Dracule:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Claws of the Dragon

Historic Background: The Translavia land mass has always been a land of war and of blood. Divided between the Varia, Vikia, and Vallach peoples it has since the time of creation been an area of almost continual conflict. The dark brooding lands are famed for being home to brigands and thiefdoms. The local princes known as Boyars fought amongst themselves, vying for control of the most profitable regions, murder and intrigue surround all the royal families. All this led to the greater region being unstable, weak and easy pickings for outlander invaders. Then came 'The Great Torment' the sky became dark and the people trembled. Black rain fell and the crops perished. When the plagues arrived the people believed God had truly abandoned them. Civil uprisings against many of the Boyars took place. When the plagues reached Kosavar, The Dracule knew they must act.

The Grand Duke rode his army into the region, and slew every man, woman, and child. Even the animals were killed, not a horse, cow or even hen was left alive. Then the city was put to the torch, so that no vile pestilence could remain. Then amongst this suffering the Vashta arrived, attacking the northern regions and quickly gaining control of a number of provinces. As the torment continued to kill to people, it was was impossible to mount a serious defence against the Vashta. Then the plagues took hold of the invaders, and their advance was stalled. So a stalemate was reached, the Vashta controlling the northern regions of Translavia, the independent Boyars holding the midlands, and the Dracule controlling the South East peninsula.

Present Situation: The Dracule spent the years of the torment building its military technologies, and learning the latest techniques of war. Diplomats were sent to the chivalric kingdoms, and treaties were signed to allow chivalric armourers and military advisers to come and advise the Grand Duke. Finally the armies of Dracule are ready to sweep the infidel Vashta from the Slav lands.

    The League of Privateers:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Historic Background: Pirates have been in existence since the first man set sail on the seas. Over the ages many Kingdoms have sponsored pirates or privateers as they are sometimes known. Then the Grand Inquisitor ruled the practice of issuing privateer licences both immoral and unchristian. The most successful of these Privateers, Lord Greystoke refused to comply with the wishes of the Grand Inquisitor. He was hunted by the various Christian navies across many seas, and survived many battles against larger fleets. But he knew they would not rest until he was dragged before the Grand Inquisitor in shackles. So he fled for the treacherous waters around the new lands of Mesocala, the Christian navies dared not travel into the those dark, unknown waters and turned back for their home ports.

Greystoke eventually found a safe harbour with (relatively) friendly natives. Here he established a modest stronghold and named it after his wife. His faith in the Christian church had been destroyed by the actions of the Grand Inquisitor. He had only ever raided non Christian fleets, so could not understand why he had been so demonised by the Grand Inquisitor. He suspected the Grand Inquisitor had hoped to seize the substantial assets of the various privateer fleets. So Greystoke took time to learn the traditions of the native peoples, and to listen to their creation stories. He heard stories of a great serpent that had swam the seas during the time of the creation. Many of these stories had parallels to the maritime stories of the Krakken and the other gods of the sea.

Then Greystoke fell ill to a fever, and for many weeks, it seemed he would surely die. Then a local shaman was summoned, in the hope that local remedies may break the fever and return Greystoke to health. The shaman ordered Greystoke be brought into the serpent temple of Canpech. There Greystoke was kept in a stone casket, and covered with snakes. Each day he was fed a potion of local fungi and snake blood. All this time the shaman danced around the casket singing stories of the creation.

After five days within the temple, Greystoke's fever broke. And slowly his health returned. During his recuperation he spent many hours speaking with the Shaman, describing the vivid visions he had seen whilst battling the fever. The Shaman was convinced that Greystoke had been visited by spirits who had been battling for possession of his soul.

Greystoke decided to adopt the faith of the shaman and swore allegiance to the serpent gods. His loyal troops did likewise, and the building of many temples was ordered.

Offering refuge to to other privateers and pirates, their numbers swelled, and soon they were able to head back to the seas of Ibellica and Europa. Over the next five decades the family Greystoke lead the league of Privateers on numerous raiding campaigns, capturing a number of settlements which could be used as springboards for further campaigns. The Greatest of these campaigns wsa the infamous attack and sacking of the Vatican. A great castle was built in the south of Ibellica, and this was to become the family home of the Greystokes.

Present Situation: Having given refuge to many other Privateers and pirates, the 'League of Privateers' has grown to become a potential powerhouse within the political and military landscape of Thera. Holding regions spread across three continents, they now have to choose in which direction to further expand their fledgling empire.

    Ducado de Sangre Valiente:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    New Frontiers

Historic Background: The plagues that gripped Ibellica and Europa during 'The Great Torment' decimated the Christian peoples. The Grand Inquisitor blamed the plagues on the anger of God, an anger caused by the close presence of Pagan and Muslim peoples. So the Duque lead armies against the Hispanics and Tahar kingdoms, the result of these wars was stalemate and the death of many great noble bloodlines. This caused such turmoil within the Ducado that a new age science developed, in a bid to find cures for the great plagues. This was the first step that would turn the Ducado into a potential 'renaissance' superpower.

Present Situation: The 'renaissance' as is has been known, has seen the Ducado grow in strength and influence. Many great inventors are working on new wonder weapons and as they become viable weapons they could make the new professional armies a truly formidable war machine. An armed mission has reached Mesomecala, and has gained a tentative foothold on the coast. These new lands boast great resources in the form of foods, furs, and gold. The native peoples are a mix of very friendly and dangerously hostile. The real decision now is whether to purse the development of a colonial meso empire, or if those resources would be better used in expanding influence closer to home.

    Sycorax Nation:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    The Kwahu Soars

Historic Background: Since the time of the beginning the northern lands of Lepana has been home to many different nomadic tribes. These tribes followed the herds of bison and mammuc on their annual migrations. The herds are considered sacred as they provided the people with everything they needed, food, furs, and many other life granting gifts. The tribes were well balanced and lived in harmony. Their settlements were small and temporary, the people living in tents, as they followed the herds. Then came 'The Great Torment', first the black rain came, and then the snows refused to leave the land. Soon the herds began to die and the people went hungry. The tribes began to raid each others camps, to find food and other resources.

As this raiding culture took hold, the tribes began to build walled settlements that could be better defended. The Sycorax were one of the first tribes to begin this evolutionary transition to permenant settlements. They sent elders to the Mesocala peoples in the south, and these elders brought back the sciences of farming and war. Using this information the Syrorax slowly began to grow, whilst the other tribes of Lenapa died away with the herds.

Present Situation: The herds have began to return and the people eat well again. A byproduct of this upturn is that the remaining non-allied tribes are regaining their strength, they are beginning to pose a threat to the Sycorax. To the west pale men in dragon headed ships have landed and are begining to exert some power in the region. The tribe elders have consulted the ancestor spirits and even the mighty Kwahu, and the visions were grim, they told of coming bloodshed and desolation. So now the Sycorax must prepare for war once again.

    Vashta Sultanate:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Vashta Awakes

Historic Background: The northern lands of Syrianna have been the home to many different kingdoms through the ages. The last of these kingdoms melted away with the onset of 'The Great Torment'. The people saw that the towns and cities were the places of plague aned pestilence, and so they returned to their nomadic roots. Then came the Christian Hordes bringing more death to the land. A mighty Otjuk warrior named Vashta Baghdadi took a small army of horse archers and ghazi and attacked a crusader army that recently captured Baé Asra. He set upon the infidels like a wolf upon sheep, not one crusader survived. This small victory acted like a beacon to the desperate peoples of northern Syrianna, and they flocked to him. So the Vashta Sultanate was born.

The new Sultan sent forth many ships of exploration, some returned, some did not. News came back of lands far to the north west that are ruled by small groups of brigands, where furtile lands go to waste, as petty infidels bicker amongst themselves. And so an army was sent through the wild waters until they reached a land named Translavia by the inhabitants. A lightening campaign saw two provinces brought under Vashta control. Then a great plague struck the army, the offensive faltered.

Present Situation: Whilst the torment raged, the Vashta decided to solidify what they had, and so took upon defensive positions. Now that torment appears to be over (for the moment at least), offensive operations can once again begin. The choice is which infidels to cleanse first the ones local in Syrianna, or the bickering fools of Translavia.

Holy Order of the Pale Knights:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Defense of the Outremer

Historic Background: The Grand Inquisitor blamed 'The Great Torment' on Gods displeasure that Eden the holy city, was in the hands of Muslims. Many pious knights took up the call to arms and headed for Syrianna. These armies were disorganised and prone to infights, and many armies failed to even reach the Outremeras it was known. As the effects of the torment increased, many believed that the time of revelations, as told in the holy books, had arrived. A pious band of knights decided it was their task to bring forth judgement on the Infidels and bring on Gods great design. They took the name 'The Holy Order of the Pale Knights', their name inspired by the Pale Rider of Revelations. Under Baldwin de Ibellin, these knights set forth to the Outremer. For twenty years they fought against the Sultans of both the Vashta and the Barka. During this time Baldwin was afflicted with leprosy and was forced to wear a silver mask, to cover his hideous affliction. Even with this curse, Baldwin was able to gain control of a coastal port and the holy city of Eden. On his death Baldwin was sainted, and all Grandmasters of the Order since have worn a silver mask out of reverence of their sainted founder.

Present Situation: For over twenty years the Pale Knights have kept their possessions of Eden and Acre, but they have been unable to strike out and expand their area of control. With the world ravaged by disease, the Grand Inquisitor has not been able to rouse extra manpower with which to support the Pale Knights. Now as the world appears to be healing, these new recruits are beginning to arrive again. So the choice is whether to defend what they have, or to strike out and take more lands in the name of God.

    Teutonic Order:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    The Hunt of the Pagans

Historic Background: The Grand Inquisitor blamed 'The Great Torment' on Gods displeasure at the exisitance of Pagan Kingdoms. These kingdoms included the Livonian Goths in North Europa, and the Valhalla and Wotan kingdoms of the Norselunds. The Teutonic Order was founded by a noble and pious knight from Wolfsburg. He led a bloody and sustained war against the Livionian Goths, until he finally the land was cleansed. These lands along with the Wolfburg castle formed the base for this crusading order of knights.

Present Situation: The Teutonic Order, fuelled by a need to redeem their souls through conquest, has grown into an unrivalled military power on the north shores of Europa. Their religious fervour comes at a great cost to the lives of their pagan neighbours, but even their fellow Christians are not exempt. They war with many and are trusted by none.

    Uruk Dominion:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Legacy of the Freed Uruk

Historical Background:::: The Uruk and Ly Kan races have existed since the time of the creation, living in packs scattered all across the forests and plains of Thera. The Romuli would send hunting parties out into the wild lands to capture both Uruks and Ly Kans so that they could be used in the bloody gladiatorial games. As time progressed, the Romuli began a selective breeding programme of these creatures to ensure a constant supply, rather than hunting for them in the wilderness. With time this selective breeding resulted in bigger, stronger specimens. It was also discovered that it was possible for Ly Kans and Uruks to join with human women, and for the union to produce offspring. The creatures borne to human mothers tended to be more intelligent, whilst losing nothing in strength or ferocity. And so slave girls were used to breed an ever more improved generation of bestial warriors. Whilst many of these bestial arena warriors were successful and became as popular as their human counterparts, they were never granted their freedom. So whilst a gladiator could dream of one day becoming a Rudiarii, a Ly Kan or Uruk warrior could only look forward to a bloody death in the arena..\n\nIn the Greco city state of Demos there lived a wealthy gladiator school owner named Xenos Hades, he was famed through out the Greco-Romuli regions for the quality of both his gladiators and the games he organised. He was also famous for his personal guard which comprised of experienced Uruk Warriors (the first Uruk Gan).

During a civic revolt in Demos, Xeno's son was kidnapped by a criminal gang, and held for ransom. The boy was Xenos's only heir, and as such was of huge value. The father was keen to pay the ransom and against all advice attended meeting where he was to personally hand over the ransom. He took with him his most trusted Uruk, named Slavos. The meeting was held in the old market of Demos. And as soon as Slavos entered the place his heckles rose, as the place smelt of blood and fear. The bestial senses of the Uruk told him all was not well. Soon a group of hooded figures arrived and demanded to see the gold. Slavos barked that first they must show that the boy has alive and present. The tallest of these hooded men appeared to be in charge, and told Xenos that the Uruk must leave before the exchange could be made. Slavos now knew this was a trap, and that the boy was almost certainly already dead. Xenos, desperate for the return of his son insisted that Slavos comply. So the Uruk was escorted out by two of the kidnappers, into an adjoining alley.

The moment they turned the corner, Slavos heard the muffled scrape of blades being drawn behind him. As quick as one could imagine, he slew around taking out the throats of both his would be assassins. Catching their bodies before they fell, he made no sound.

Inside the market, the tall man was still insisting that the gold be shown. The cold truth of the situation was beginning to seep into the mind of Xenos. His boy was dead, and these brigands intended to takes the gold and then dispatch him also. In his heart sorrow quickly turned to rage, and he began to shout that the boy must be presented, and he drew his sword. Reacting to the change in demeanour of the elderly man, the brigands drew their blades and the tall man, reached inside his cloak. He threw down his hood as he tossing a round object at Xenos. As he object reached Xenos, he recognised the bruised and blooded head of his boy. Stepping back with the horror of it, he stumbled and dropped his sword. Seeing this the brigands rushed forward to complete their work. It was at this point that Slavos came screaming into the dark marketplace. The wild blood-lust in his cries causing the brigands to freeze momentarily, enough time for Xenos to reclaim his sword and enter the melee alongside Slavos. The next few minutes were a kaleidoscope of steel, blood, and gore. In the end only Xenos and Slavos remained alive, stood back to back, ankle deep in the blood of the now vanquished brigands. Xenos bent down to retrieve the head of his murdered son, and the grief took over him. Mumbling curses and oaths of vengeance he collapsed. The trusted Uruk Gan picked up his prostrate master and carried him back to his villa.

For three days Xenos fell in and out of a feverish sleep. Physicians from the gladiator school tended to him, concerned that their lord had lost his wits, and would never again return to them. All this time the ever faithful Slavos never left his masters bedside. Finally Xenos broke from the fever and returned to a world, to find himself without an heir, and of an age, where he could not hope to sire another son. He knew who truly deserved to be named as his heir, the one living being who he truly trusted. This was of course his Uruk, Slavos, but never before had an Uruk been given granted a Rudis, never been given their freedom, let alone been named as heir to a highly ranked noble such as Xenos Hades.

For many days Xenos held council with his advisers. Legal, religious and political ramifications had to be considered, before he could risk naming Slavos as his heir. In the end all said that if he named an Uruk as his heir then the King of the City State would declare him mad and have all his assets seized. But Xenos had to follow his heart, he knew it was the honourable thing to do. The next festival was only a week away, and Xenos as always would organise the gladiator games.\n\nAfter watching Slavos win his last battle in the Arena, Xenos strode out into the sand covered ring and to the amazement of the crowd, presented Slavos with the wooden sword that signified that the Uruk was now a freeman, and then proudly proclaimed to the crowd, that he, Xenos Hades had taken Slavos as his heir. The crowd cheered, still drunk on the blood-lust of the battle that the mighty Uruk had just won before them. The King looked uneasy as the crowd where clearly delighted. Indeed this was the very reason Xenos had chose to announce it here, because whist the King was a corrupt serpent of a man, he was also a weak coward. An as such he would be fearful of moving against the appointment of Slavos, if it was clearly popular with the masses. And so the first Uruk had gained his freedom.

Slavos was now officially known as Slavos Hades having taken his adopted fathers name. For two years Xenos taught Slavos the ways of the human world. He schooled his in the arts of politics, of finance, so that when he was gone, Slavos could continue his 'fathers' legacy. Then as the plagues of 'The Great Torment' reached Demos, Xenos was taken from the world of living, and this time Slavos could not save his beloved father.

Demos by now was little more than vassal state to the Romuli, due the weakness of a long line of corrupt Kings. When The Romuli heard that plagues had taken hold of Demos, they sent their dreaded legions to 'cleanse' the city. The King ordered the gates opened when the Legions arrived believing he at least would be spared. However as soon as the Romuli entered the city the slaughter began, all were killed, old men, women, children, none were spared.

The King and his guard joined the Romuli, expecting to join them in the slaughter, but the Legions had been given orders that no living thing was to survive. The King died badly, a pilum in his chest, and at least a dozen gladius wounds before his begging pleas were finally silenced. When the news of the slaughter reached Slavos he was at the Gladiator School on the furthest side of the City from where the Romuli had entered. Uruks, Ly Kan, and Human fighters followed Slavos as he led this makeshift force to confront the invaders. The Romuli had already destroyed the merchants quarter of the city (ironically the only area that had been affected by the plagues so far) when Slavos and his warriors arrived. This numbers had swelled on this rush across the city as commoners and nobles alike sought to protect their city.

The 'Battle of Demos' as it became known was a long bloody affair and for a good part of the day it looked as though the Romuli would take the city. The professional legions cutting through ranks of untrained townsfolk without real resistance. But the arrival of the Uruk and Ly Kan gave hope to the people of Demos, and slowly the tide of the battle turned. Finally, long after the sun had set, the Romuli commander saw that victory was unattainable, and ordered a retreat to the city gates. Luckily Slavos had expected this and had stationed a reserve of Ly Yar and Uruk Yar guard the city gates. And when the last hundred Legionarii reached the gates the younglings set about them, tearing them apart, revelling in the slaughter. When the dust settled and the last sword was sheathed, not a single Romuli had made it out of the gates.

An army of over two thousand men had entered Demos, and all had fallen in the blood soaked streets. The city had lost of five thousand of her inhabitants, but this was still a victory, the City of Demos had survived, and no longer would she crawl under the yoke of the Romuli.\n\nIt took a full week to clear the streets of all the bodies. A grand pyre was made for the fallen of Demos, so that their brave spirits could join with the gods. The bodies of the Romuli were decapitated, their heads were used to build a mighty 'slaughter shrine' and their bodies were fed to the war dogs.

Once the clean up of the city was complete a festival was held to celebrate the survival of Demos. At this festival the people, recognising that is was Slavos Hades, the first freed Uruk, who had saved their lives and their mother city. He was by popular proclamation, acclaimed the new King of Demos. Slavos addressed the people, he explained he could not take the title 'king'. For too long the title 'King' had signified nothing more than being the chief puppet of the Romuli. He would however accept the title of 'Alpha'. He explained that being the Alpha, meant it would be he who first offered himself to the enemy in battle, that if the city was hungry it would be he who first went without food. He would make the City proud again, he would right the wrongs inflicted on all the creatures of Demos, be they human, Ly Kan, Uruk , even Reptarri. He would raise a great army and he would turn the City State of Demos into a mighty dominion.

Present Situation: The legacy of Slavos continues, his bloodline still rules over the Uruk Dominion (as it has become known). The influence of the Dominion stretches across Hadea. The Alpha has sent out armies to explore for new lands to conquer.. A fortress has been established far to the north. This could become the first stone in a new northern empire.

In this IH, each faction is unique and, as such, has their own strengths and weaknesses. As such, each faction will have their own one-of-a-kind units, in addition to the standard setup. This is the standard setup:

    Heavy Infantry
    Light Cavalry
    Heavy Cavalry
    Missile Cavalry
NOTE: Some factions may not have some of the above listed.
The unique units for each faction are as follows:

Men of Wotan: Kossacks; Nomadic hunters, gathered together into large groups to become a powerful force on the field. Regarded as Elite Horse Archers.
Romuli Empire: The Legions; Disciplined heavy infantry armed with 2 Pila(a javelin) and a shortsword apiece, as well as a massive shield. Good for holding lines.

Gaelic Nation: Kerns; Light Infantry armed with a javelin and a shortsword as well as a small shield. However, they wear no armor.
Lao Che Khanate: Sung Yen; Lightly armoured Horse Archers, but are deadly with a bow and very fast. Also available in large numbers.
Tahar Caliphate: Camel Gunners; Crack shots atop camels. Not very fast, but the smell of Camels scares any enemy horses.
Grand Duchy of Dracule: Vampyres; Stealthy, fast, and armed with twin shortswords, these men are the perfect battlefield assassins who can also be used as Light Infantry.
League of Privateers: Greystoke's rifles; Elite light infantry with a long-range, rifled musket. Good for picking off enemy officers.
Ducado de Sangre Valiente: Jinites; Basically Almughavars on horseback. Fast and effective against armor. Not to be ed with.
Sycorax Nation: Thunder Braves; Musketeers on Horseback. Good for turning armoured knights into swiss cheese. Very fast as well.
Vashta Sultanate: Yani Ceri; Heavy Infantry armed with a Poleaxe and mail armor. Slow moving, but powerful.
Holy Order of the Pale Knights: Knights Templar; Fanaticly religious, heavily armoured, and skilled fighters. Come in Mounted and Dismounted varieties.
Teutonic Order: Ritterbruder; See Knights Templar
Uruk Dominion: Uruks; Powerful Heavy Infantry, and gruesome in appearance, though somewhat lacking in numbers.

I'll have the rest of the info up shortly, but for now feel free to choose a faction.

The Lao Che, ingame, use alot of Japanese terms. Sung(meaning horse archer) and Yen(meaning peasant) are the two root words.

Lao Che are like a weird mix of Timurids, Chinese, Japanese, and Mongols. But they're a lot of fun and totally OP'd (they have war elephants with rocket launchers on them), don't worry.
