Problem starting up the game

The problem is, whenever I doubleclick on the icon that says "Medieval II Retrofit" it takes me to the Total War launcher. I choose the "Retrofit mod" and it shuts down and says "Medieval II suffered a fatal error and will now exit"

how to fix this plz? I have downloaded the retrofit mod, and installed it. Then I downloaded the "Grandunit Addon" and installed it to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\medieval ii total war"

yes, I got this game off steam, which I suspect might be the reason, but anyone know how to get around this particular problem?
