Default The Fall of Eagles - 476 IH

It is January 1st, 476 AD.

In the west, Europe has fallen into its Dark Ages. The barbarian Visigoths have overrun Spain and southern Gaul; the Alemanni and Burgundians, eastern Gaul; and the Franks are a hair away from completely crushing the Gallo-Roman Dominion of Soissons. The last remnant of civilization in Western Europe, the Western Roman Empire (whose capital isn't even Rome anymore), is under threat from within - the usurper boy-emperor, Romulus Augustulus, and his father/puppet-master Orestes face a mercenary rebellion led by the barbarian foederati captain Odoacer. Further north, the Romanized Britons have fallen into scattered principalities fighting each other almost as often as they fight the invading Angles, Saxons and Jutes, and the Irish have nearly unified the Emerald Isle left untouched by the Romans so long ago.

In the east, the Eastern Roman Empire centered at Constantinople is much better off than its western counterpart - fabulously wealthy, and with a loyal and highly disciplined army that has seen many years of conflict with the barbarians and the Persian Sassanids. Speaking of the Sassanids, this mighty Persian Empire is roughly equal in power and influence to the Eastern Romans, and they have been trading blows for the better part of a century if not more; this does not seem likely to change.

Can you lead a country to glory out of these Dark Ages, or will your empire crumble to dust like the old Roman Empire and be forgotten in the mists of history forever?

    Military Rules:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
There are six types of units to recruit:

Light Infantry - Lightly-equipped skirmishers useful for harassing heavier-armed enemies from a short distance or fighting on rough terrain, but will be destroyed by a stiff breeze anywhere else. 2%, 1,000 men/unit.
Heavy Infantry - Heavily-armored and armed footmen who can hold their ground against even heavy cavalry in close quarters, but are rather slow and have no countermeasures against missile troops. 3%, 1,000 men/unit.
Spearmen - Medium infantry armed with long spears who can turn any cavalry idiotic enough to charge them head-on into kebabs and keep enemy infantry at bay, but are even slower than heavy infantry and are also useless when confronted with missile troops. 3%, 1,000 men/unit.
Archers - Unarmored archers who can turn any opponent into something resembling a pincushion from a distance, but will be slaughtered in close quarters and are especially vulnerable to cavalry. 2%, 800 men/unit.
Light Cavalry - Lightly equipped horsemen who make excellent scouts and raiders and are also handy for destroying an enemy's flanks, who however cannot survive in sustained melees. 3%, 600 men/unit.
Heavy Cavalry - Heavily armored riders who can trample opponents underfoot and bulldoze infantry lines, but like all cavalry are weak to Spearmen. 5%, 500 men/unit.
Missile Cavalry - Speedy, unarmored cavalrymen armed with bows, great for harassing enemy troops (until they run out of arrows, anyway) but who are less accurate than foot archers and who, like archers, will be turned into mincemeat very quickly if the enemy ever catches up to them. 4%, 500 men/unit.

    And 3 unit quality levels:

Militia - 1 day, 2% - Conscripts pulled off the farm, drunkards, people who signed up for a dare, etc. Basically, badly trained men with substandard equipment who however can be spawned quickly.
Regular - 3 days, 4% - Properly trained and equipped professional/semi-professional soldiers who know what they're doing.
Elite - 5 days, 6% - Mighty men who have gone through training from Hell and received only the finest equipment, now serving as the cream of your crop and the spine of your army.

Also, 3 types of ships (all ships come in groups of 5):

Biremes - 2%, 3 days - Light, speedy and maneuverable ships suited for raiding and reconnaissance missions, not great naval battles.
Triremes - 3%, 6 days - Medium three-deck ships that can hold their own in battle and which should form the bulk of any respectable blue-water navy.
Quinqueremes - 5%, 9 days - Massive five-deck ships that can easily demolish lesser triremes and biremes, and usually serve as a fleet's flagships.

Note: The quality levels are for land units only.

Upkeep will always be 1/2 of your units' original cost.

Battles will be fought in the classic style - I'll put up a map and troop strengths, you are to send in your orders by PM and hopefully I'll have the results up in a day or two at worst. Please, please include a map showing your troop deployments and movements, it would make my life so much easier

    Economic Rules:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Every province you hold will contribute 5% to your economy every turn.

You can loot captured provinces for a quick 10% bonus, but the province will be damaged and only contribute 2.5% to your economy for the next 3 turns.

Vassals will pay 1/2 of their income every turn (count the # of provinces they have, multiplied by 5 and divided by 2). You can ask them to pay 3/4 instead, but that will tremendously reduce their loyalty to you and may even cause them to revolt. Vassals will also fight on your side in wars.

You'll also get 5% per trade agreement.

Title reminds me of a famous British miniseries I watched recently.

At any rate, I'm surprised Barry, this came completely out of the blue! I thought you were working on a British or Diadochi one! I'll claim the Franks.

I was, but I was like 'nah, this is gonna be cooler'

I will definitely need players for at least the WRE and the Sassanids, the more the better under that cap of 8 of course. Info for the chosen factions will show up tomorrow.

It's probably too late to change the game now, but should there be some kind of Slavic faction?

Nah, the great migration of the Slavs didn't occur until 500-900AD. Still got a little bit until then. Even when it hits 500, it will still just be rearing up, not near enough to count as a faction.

Wish we could play as the Basques. Such a cool history, read a good book on them a while ago.

Where do you find these things, Kaits? I have to go to your library some time! Mine has nothing on history.

Unfortunately the Basques are a 3-province country, so in-game they'd be destroyed in the first 2-4 turns by the Visigoths even if I were to be nice to you
