Right, have you tried reinstalling from a new download?

But i got the 'safe mod' working and i guess thats good enough for me

If thats fine for you then alright, but you aren't getting any of the benefits of DMUC (no extra units, graphic etc).
Have you tried reinstalling Steam yet? We've had to do that recently.
