What books would you recommend as the definitive one volume treatments of the Anglo-Sudan and Anglo-Zulu Wars? I would like them to be objective or lean slightly towards the British perspective and not be the sort of PC anti-Western kind of stuff you often see nowadays. Right now it looks like Michael Asher's "Khartoum: The Ultimate Imperial Adventure" is getting the best reviews for that campaign. The possibilities I'm looking at for the Zulu War are "Brave Men's Blood: The Epic of the Zulu War 1879" by Ian Knight and "The Washing of the Spears: The Rise and Fall of the Zulu Nation" by Donald Morris. What is everyone's opinion on these books? Keep in mind I would like them to be very objective or British-leaning in viewpoint rather than the other way around.

Anyone intersted in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 must read 'The Washing of the Spears' by Donald R. Morris, a really fabulous history book that reads like a novel. After that I recommend three authors -look them up on the net- Ian Knight, John Laband and F. W. D. Jackson. Enough to get started.

There are several Public Domain books regarding the Sudan Wars which can be downloaded in pdf, kindle and many other formats:
    1) Link: https://archive.org/details/fireswordinsudan00slatiala
Fire and sword in the Sudan : a personal narrative of fighting and serving the Dervishes, 1879-1895
by Slatin, Rudolf Carl, Freiherr von, 1857-1932
    2) This one don't know if it's PD but it can be downloaded in PDF; read it and very good presentation including Hicks expedition: Three Sudanese Wars (can't find the download link now ....)
    3) Ten Years in Captivity in the Mahdi's Camp, Father Joseph Ohrwalder Link: https://archive.org/stream/tenyearsc...ge/n7/mode/2up
    4) Too Late for Khartoum: Link: https://archive.org/stream/toolatefo...ge/n8/mode/2up
    5) Link: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/4943 The River War, Winston Churchill - subtitled the reconquest of Sudan but contains extensive initial chapter about the first wars in 1883-85.
There's a few more out there. Non-free books about Sudan Wars and Zulu Wars are plenty if you look around, starting with Osprey.

And although the thread is titled "History, Books, Videos..." I think it is relevant to include a mod I just made for Civilization III Conquests, see my signature.
