Thread: Basic through Intermediate Practical Application Modeling Course

  1. #1

Default Basic through Intermediate Practical Application Modeling Course

There will be an official class in the TWC university, so the rest of the lessons are on hold until they are released in the 'official' course. Apparently, posting your assignments is mandatory in the course if you want the medal or whatever you get from TWC for 'passing'.

I will continue to post lessons here also for those like me that just want to learn on their own, but you won't get a medal (or whatever) without taking the 'official' course.
    ~

These lessons are designed to be used with Milkshape 3D, however the same principles apply to all 3d software. If you want to learn how to use 3ds Max, watch the video tutorials that come with it, they are excellent and will teach you everything.

Feel free to work at your own pace and comment on anything that you think could be improved or clarified.

Lesson One: Overview/Good Reference Pictures/Getting Familiar

Lesson Two: Creating Shapes, Scaling Shapes

Lesson Three: Using Shapes to Create, Part 1 ~ On hold

Lesson Four: Using Shapes to Create, Part 2

    Lesson Five: Modeling from Scratch

Lesson Six: Precision Modeling, Part 1

Lesson Seven: Precision Modeling, Part 2

    Lesson Eight: Editing Existing Models

Lesson Nine: Using Goat/Goal to Implement Models

Do not PM me with questions pertaining to this material. Post it here in the thread, as others will probably have the same questions. Also, you should be helping each other out with answers.

Luckily, I had just downloaded milkshape today. Was getting tired of waiting, so i figured i'd poke around in it a bit. Glad to see that my 30-day trial version will be exploited as much as possible, great timing.

Nice tutorial + rep.And for move option do you know that you can select all verticles(model) and select move button and move whole model in another place.

hmm.. it seems im going to wait a while until i do the course, as it seems to magically know that i have had a trial before, and wont let me download another one (damn computer wizardry!). Ill probably buy it in december sometime as i am currently a bit short, so would it be fine if i started the course a bit later on? Also, is there any way to have the trial twice, as i'd rather not spend £20 on a modelling program and then find that i hate modelling or am rubbish at it

Lesson two posted, I typed it rather quickly so let me know of any typos or mistakes.

For those that have already read lesson one I left this important tid bit of info out (in bold):

Selecting: This tool allows you to select or deselect verts or faces, it will also select any verts or faces behind it. Left click + drag selects and Shift + Right click + drag deselects. By holding shift you can add to, or take away from your preexisting selection. The “ignore backfaces” box allows you to only select those faces or verts on the front of the side you are viewing from, and not all those behind. Selecting also allows you to select groups and joints but don’t worry about that for now.

Lesson one has been updated with this info.

It is not mandatory, I am not grading or anything, but feel free to post anything you make if you want feedback... or just to show off

Thanks, oh and here is a head model I made from scratch (aka vertex by vertex), I don't know how to make ears, or how to make the middle line less visible.

They both look great for the low amount of verts and faces used.

First post updated with new info.
