The most realistic mod is Europa Barbarorum, which has faction names and units in their original languages, historical events and represents nearly every people from the Atlantic to the Altai. However it's gameplay is quite slow and don't expect to blitz.
Rome Total Realism isn't so realistic but gameplay is faster and more intensive. There aren't so many factions or units but it's quite good
Roma Surrectum has 0-turn recruitment which allows for really massive battles and alot of them. The new 2.0 version has almost the same unit detail as EB, but there RS is a little Roman-centric.
XGM(Extended Greek Mod) is the most vannila like and focuses the most on Hellenic factions. It has an interesting battle system and is worth a try.
You can install all mods on this list on the same RTW installation except RS which overwrites vannila.

Harold Godwinson: You can make a new folder of Rome and install RS2 on it, this way you can play all mods at a time (check the RS2 forum for more info)

OP: I'd recommend you Europa Barbarorum, Rome Total Realism (you want realism, right?) and Roma Surrectum.

I think Europa Barbarorum is most realistic but RTR and RS are good too

In EB the battles are smaller, but feel much more decisive. Armies are expensive and harder to raise and maintain, therefore you really feel that each battle (especially early in the game) will decide the fate of your empire.

RS( havent tried RSII) is quite arcadey and has you raising armies several thousand strong to match tens of thousands of barbarian scum. Still a great mod and very, very fun.

RTR is sort of like a blend of the 2.

    Overall, i'd go with RSII

The arcadey feel is easily gotten rid of on RS2 by downloading a very simple sub mod that reduces the amount of stacks of the enemy and yourself by increasing unit cost. Its very effective and makes battles just as decisive as EB imo.

Also the graphics of RS2 are stunning. Game play is more centralized on the Roman faction but hey...its Rome total war. It has a nice legion recruit system and you can recruit up to 32 (or something like that) different legions, each with their own unit artwork.

RS2. I just wish it didn't have so many damn bugs.. You can't even quicksave :\
The patch will be coming out in a matter of weeks which will put to rest many of these annoying glitches so that's not a problem

So in my opinion RS2 is definitely the way forward

In my opinion EB is the most realistic mod. Armies are made up by historical standards, without anachronisms.
The other mod aren't bad, but they don't achieve the realism of EB (although graphics and gameplay are greatly improved).

Europa Barbarorum for the campaign play and realism.
Roma Surrectum II due to excellent graphics and (for me too) many huge battles.

RTR is too vanilla for my style. Both grahics as well as campaign.
Atleast the current version - RTR VII (still in development) might be a good contender to the two other superb mods.

Regarding map accuracy and historic detail Rome Total History (RTH) beats all the others.

If you want a late roman experience then try the Invasio Barbarborum mods which cover the period of the mid 3rd Century through to the 5th Century.
