    Default I need music help

My relatives from Colombia just bought me an Ipod (the new video kind, 30 gb), and I have no idea what to do with it. I really don't listen to music, and would like it if anybody could help me on deciding what music to put in (I dislike country, rap, and girly pop). I have a wide variety of tastes, though. I've already been told to put Radiohead and System of a Down, along with classics, such as the Who and the Sex Pistols. Btw, do you have to buy music from Apple, or can you "acquire" the music yourself from outside sources and transfer them on?

You can always get them from iTunes, however, that costs money. You can put your own MP3's on an iPod.

    Cheers,

Err...just put in the music you like?

If you have no idea where to start get some classics like led zeppelin but stay way from them damn "pink floyd" and "the who"...you're not sophisticated just because you like pink floyd.

True enough, go for Zepplin. You might also want to check out the beatles (of course) rolling stones, deep purple, Jimi Hendrix, Michael jackson (yes, the guy with the funny nose), REM, Red hot chili peppers and the doors.

I hate the Doors, but I seem to be a minority around here. (At least the girl's Doors t-shirt is hot).

Go for some classic stuff, even if there is a whole "I'm sophisticated because I like Pink Floyd" trend, Pink Floyd is great.

And I'll shamelessly plug Coldplay too, be sure to check out a few songs of theirs (Speed of Sound being their most famous)

Watch the possible talk of illegal downloading everyone. No one has said anything wrong as of yet, but just watch yourselves. You can put music on from files on your computer though, Ximan, it doesn't have to be bought from Apple.

You probably wouldn't like most of the music i'd recommend though, it seems to be "out of the mainstream," like myself.

Well there are several ways to get music without having to pay.

Kazaa: adds and poissibly spyware in the free version

    Shareaza: somthing like kazaa

Imesh: decent program, I don't like the GUI though

Emule: never used it but supossed to be good

Bearshare: very good program, not alot of fakes and it's very fast (also for movie files and games) but the files you download may have virusses because there is alot of porn on Bearshare. Make sure you have a good VC.

Limewire: my favorite, never encoutered a virus with it, good download speeds and alot of quality and quantity. Suprisingly it's rather unknown.

Well I hope you don't have any moral objections, or else these program won't be really usefull

You got to have; Audioslave, Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Rammstein, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Dire Straits and Red Hot Chilli Peppers on it.. Anyways,, that's what I listen to...

But I really think you should find your own music taste. You can for example listen to the radio(look at music television) and write down the songs you like, then download them to you iPod. If that doesn't work, nothing will..

Jeez, fill it up with Vivaldi. Stravinsky once said he wrote 1 concerto and copied it a further 399 times.

Classical music bores me to tears with a few notable exceptions (like Ride of the Valkyries).

What Speed of Sound Coldplay's most famous song in US? Their last album is bollocks compared to their first two. Get them instead (I love 'The Scientist')

Are you SURE you dont like even one rap song? Ever, in your life? Cuz I'm a guy who can recommend a lot of unusual, unique and thoughtprovoking rap songs, if anyone wishes to open up their mind. There seems to be a lack of rap fans on this forum...which I find confusing. If youre a kid under the age of 20...you should like SOME rap at least, imo.

Yes, it was playing on every radio station for months.

I haven't heard the rest of that album, but I'll take that song in particular over the other Coldplay songs I've heard.

I just don't like rap period, it hurts my ears. If has a tune and the guy's singing, it isn't rap.

The problem with that is that MTV and the radio don't play real music.

I have emule, it's a great program. You're the fifth person whose recommended limewire to me, so I guess I'll try it out. Also, does anybody know if bittorrent is any good.

Btw, this is only for informational purposes. I would never download anything illegal, ever.

Rap is only for the stu....
    Sorry, I won't go there...

Anyhoo, other choices of mine (though these will likely be more controversial) are Nirvana, the White Stripes, Placebo, Aerosmith, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage against the machine/audioslave (though it's actually somewhat rap-ish...), Queen, Queens of the stoneage, Prodigy, the offspring, Nightwish, marylin Manson (I know, I can't help it! ), Green Day, Bruce Springsteen, Black Sabbath and Metallica of course.

and whatever you do DO NOT LISTEN TO PINK FLOYD! They're horrible...
