Stalingrad by Anthony Beevor is an amazing book, chronicalling the advances of the 6th Army, and their eventual defeat at Stalingrad
EDIT: I already have Beevor's book on Berlin, it is an amazing piece of work, i loved reading every second, you made a good choice asking for it

Byzantium: The Early Centuries, Byzantium: The Apogee, or Byzantium: The Decline and Fall, all by John Julius Norwich. A masterpiece. In my opinion, it rivals Gibbon's work "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire"

Its about 10000 greek hoplites who were hired as mercenaries by a Cyrus of Persia to topple his brother. Unfortunately, he died in the last battle, and the book is all about the Greeks' journey home. I liked it very much. It shows how good of a leader Xenophon was. He always bore the burden of the journey along side his own men.

Any of the three books by Cornelius Ryan: The Longest Day, The Bridge Too Far and the Last Battle are all good.

Hmm... for a romantic description of the crusades I'd like to point to Kevin Crossley-Holland's trilogy. I only read the third book (typical) so I can't really tell anything about the first books. But the third book was nice, deep, poetic and about the crusades. Add t that a little Arthurian spices and you've got the concept for a great trilogy.

Though the book kind read slowly in the beginning I blame that to the dutch translation.

I also don't know what age you are. I'm 14 so maybe you'll be looking for something more mature (?).

There were also some extremely beautiful books of a Dutch writer, Thea Beckman.
She wrote many historical books of which I think the Hundred-Year's War trilogy is absurdly moving and sweet! I'm not sure where to find it, or under which title you have to seek, as it will be a translated version. Maybe the theme won't be to interesting for Englishmen or Americans (the good old Anglo-French hatreds...), but no other writer, not a single other book has portrayed the life of French trouvères during the hundred-year's war so nicely as this trilogy. I recommend it to everyone!
