How to put out fire?

I was playing a naval battle and one of my ships caught fire. I had forgotten how to put a fire out so my ship almost sunk

can somebody tell me how to put out fires.

The fastest way to put one out is to tell your ship to hold fire (in other words, turn off "fire at will"). The crew will then stop manning the cannon and instead work on putting out the fire.

That's a good question... my assumption is no it won't.
IIUC, fire is put out "in their spare time", so giving them something else to do won't let them put out a fire.
But I'm really on a limb here, might be totally wrong.
