Thread: Whats the best musical ever?

Default Whats the best musical ever?

Pretty much self expalnatory. Whats your favorite musical and whats your favorite song or act from a musical. For me it has to be Westside Story. Unbelivable music and dancing. Plus its made in my city. How can you go wrong? It also has my favorite number from any musical though it has so many good ones itself its almost hard to pick. But this is it.

    Artist: Wand, Betty Lyrics
    Song: America Lyrics

    ROSALIA
    Puerto Rico,
    You lovely island . . .
    Island of tropical breezes.
    Always the pineapples growing,
Always the coffee blossoms blowing . . .

    ANITA
    Puerto Rico . . .
    You ugly island . . .
    Island of tropic diseases.
    Always the hurricanes blowing,
    Always the population growing . . .
    And the money owing,
    And the babies crying,
    And the bullets flying.
    I like the island Manhattan.
Smoke on your pipe and put that in!

    OTHERS
I like to be in America!
    O.K. by me in America!
    Ev'rything free in America
For a small fee in America!

    ROSALIA
I like the city of San Juan.

    ANITA
I know a boat you can get on.

    ROSALIA
Hundreds of flowers in full bloom.

    ANITA
Hundreds of people in each room!

    ALL
    Automobile in America,
    Chromium steel in America,
    Wire-spoke wheel in America,
    Very big deal in America!

    ROSALIA
I'll drive a Buick through San Juan.

    ANITA
If there's a road you can drive on.

    ROSALIA
I'll give my cousins a free ride.

    ANITA
How you get all of them inside?

    ALL
    Immigrant goes to America,
    Many hellos in America;
    Nobody knows in America
    Puerto Rico's in America!

    ROSALIA
    I'll bring a T.V. to San Juan.

    ANITA
If there a current to turn on!

    ROSALIA
I'll give them new washing machine.

    ANITA
What have they got there to keep clean?

    ALL
I like the shores of America!
    Comfort is yours in America!
Knobs on the doors in America,
    Wall-to-wall floors in America!

    ROSALIA
When I will go back to San Juan.

    ANITA
When you will shut up and get gone?

    ROSALIA
Everyone there will give big cheer!

    ANITA
Everyone there will have moved here!
And the dancing thats going on during this is a sight to be seen, So much energy.

Then again I do always enjoy this little diddy from it also.

    Artist: Tamblyn, Russ Lyrics
    Song: Gee, Officer Krupke! Lyrics

    ACTION
    Dear kindly Sergeant Krupke,
    You gotta understand,
    It's just our bringin' up-ke
That gets us out of hand.
    Our mothers all are junkies,
    Our fathers all are drunks.
    Golly Moses, natcherly we're punks!

    ACTION AND JETS
    Gee, Officer Krupke, we're very upset;
We never had the love that ev'ry child oughta get.
    We ain't no delinquents,
    We're misunderstood.
Deep down inside us there is good!

    ACTION
    There is good!

    ALL
There is good, there is good,
    There is untapped good!
Like inside, the worst of us is good!

SNOWBOY: (Spoken) That's a touchin' good story.

ACTION: (Spoken) Lemme tell it to the world!

SNOWBOY: Just tell it to the judge.

    ACTION
    Dear kindly Judge, your Honor,
    My parents treat me rough.
    With all their marijuana,
They won't give me a puff.
    They didn't wanna have me,
    But somehow I was had.
Leapin' lizards! That's why I'm so bad!

    DIESEL: (As Judge) Right!

    Officer Krupke, you're really a square;
This boy don't need a judge, he needs an analyst's care!
It's just his neurosis that oughta be curbed.
    He's psychologic'ly disturbed!

    ACTION
    I'm disturbed!

    JETS
    We're disturbed, we're disturbed,
    We're the most disturbed,
    Like we're psychologic'ly disturbed.

DIESEL: (Spoken, as Judge) In the opinion on this court, this child is depraved on account he ain't had a normal home.

ACTION: (Spoken) Hey, I'm depraved on account I'm deprived.

DIESEL: So take him to a headshrinker.

    ACTION (Sings)
    My father is a bastard,
    My ma's an S.O.B.
    My grandpa's always plastered,
    My grandma pushes tea.
    My sister wears a mustache,
    My brother wears a dress.
    Goodness gracious, that's why I'm a mess!

    A-RAB: (As Psychiatrist) Yes!
Officer Krupke, you're really a slob.
This boy don't need a doctor, just a good honest job.
Society's played him a terrible trick,
    And sociologic'ly he's sick!

    ACTION
    I am sick!

    ALL
We are sick, we are sick,
    We are sick, sick, sick,
    Like we're sociologically sick!

A-RAB: In my opinion, this child don't need to have his head shrunk at all. Juvenile delinquency is purely a social disease!

ACTION: Hey, I got a social disease!

A-RAB: So take him to a social worker!

    ACTION
    Dear kindly social worker,
They say go earn a buck.
    Like be a soda jerker,
Which means like be a schumck.
    It's not I'm anti-social,
    I'm only anti-work.
    Gloryosky! That's why I'm a jerk!

BABY JOHN: (As Female Social Worker)
    Eek!
Officer Krupke, you've done it again.
This boy don't need a job, he needs a year in the pen.
    It ain't just a question of misunderstood;
Deep down inside him, he's no good!

    ACTION
    I'm no good!

    ALL
We're no good, we're no good!
    We're no earthly good,
Like the best of us is no damn good!

    DIESEL (As Judge)
    The trouble is he's crazy.

    A-RAB (As Psychiatrist)
    The trouble is he drinks.

BABY JOHN (As Female Social Worker)
    The trouble is he's lazy.

    DIESEL
    The trouble is he stinks.

    A-RAB
    The trouble is he's growing.

    BABY JOHN
    The trouble is he's grown.

    ALL
Krupke, we got troubles of our own!

    Gee, Officer Krupke,
    We're down on our knees,
'Cause no one wants a fellow with a social disease.
    Gee, Officer Krupke,
    What are we to do?
    Gee, Officer Krupke,
    Krup you!
    A real funny scene.

Just how good was it? Nominated for an incredible eleven Academy Awards in 1961, WEST SIDE STORY took home ten Oscars including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (George Chakaris), Best Supporting Actress (Rita Moreno), and Best Direction (Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins). Only two other films, BEN-HUR (1959) and TITANIC (1997) have earned more Academy Awards.

    Default Fun Thread!

Perfectly tailored to give me a few minutes break from my animating and coding projects.

WSS is indeed grand, but it doesn't hold the same magic for me that Cats... - Just kidding!

Maybe I'm too personally involved in theater to have just one favorite, there are aspects of many shows that I've enjoyed for one reason or another, but I'll sum up some of my favorites and why:

Drama - Most Happy Fella. It's really emotionally charged with the right people in it, and is a totally unique show in so many ways.

Comedy- The Producers -- This show Kills me. A lot. The movie is one of my favorites, and I hope the movie-musical-movie is going to work.

Music- The Yeoman of the Guard (Gilbert & Sullivan) -- maybe this doesn't count as it's not a 'musical', but I'd rather put this than a Sondheim (otherwise Kiss me Kate--Cole Porter, you can't go wrong!)

Guilty Pleasure - Joseph & the technicolor dreamcoat. It's guilty because it's Lloyd-Weber. His stuff is like the porn of musicals.

Ok, now I've got 'Wunderbar' stuck in my head. Goodnight!

Yeah I love that movie. Springtime for Hitler sure is a scream. I dont see how the new one can be as good as the original just as i couldnt see a remake of WSS as being as good . For british stuuf I like all the Gilbert and Sullivan stuff .I especially the HMS Penifore. I believe thats fromthe Pirates of Pensam or something like that. Its like 5am here so Im not thinking to straight :sweatingb

I'd say Les Misérables for best drama musical.

The best musical ever was South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.

Hilarious musical numbers, and a hilarious movie in general.

Wow, best Musical (maybe should be in the arts section?)

That's a toughy. Seen to many to chose favourites.

    3 Penny Opera is fun.

Chicago was great (the stage or the movie versions)

Phantom of the Opera was great for this ex-newwave industrialist (all the cool gothic sets!!)

Sound of Music was probably the standard bearer.

    Les Miserable was incredible.

Too many to chose one fav here.

(and yes Cats was over played!!! But it was cute.)
Faithfully under the patronage of the fallen yet rather amiable Octavian.

    I agree.

how can a musical be homosexual?
surely, if anything, a musical would best be described as asexual... having no interest in sex whatsoever...
