Here, one can submit their own quote which reflects one's philsophy on life or on a specific matter. For example,

"God is a comedian playing to an audience too afraid to laugh."
    -Voltaire

Let us analyze this quote. What do you think it means? Do you agree/ disagree with it? Etc...

The quote above undermines the general human feeling towards religion. I think this quote expresses Voltaire's anger towards God and his struggle to find the real answer in the mystery of God. If God existed, why would he let us do these horrible things to each other? This is a message that has plagued humans for eternity. Is God evil? Why is God evil? Is God playing a joke on us? Does he LIKE seeing humanity suffer? OR... Did God abandon human kind? Does God exist? Etc... etc... etc...

    What do you think?

    Does anyone offer an analysis?

My quote for today is this haiku from Ryokan (japanese zen poet and recluse). A local aristocrat came to his hut in the mountains to offer him the abbot position in a famous monastery - to which Ryokan replied by picking up a fallen leaf and writing on it the following:

    The wind gives me
    enough fallen leaves
    to make a fire
    sic transit gloria mundi

Democracy is the thin veil cast over your eyes to shield your sight from the tyranny that is and the liberty that should be.

Americans always try to do the right thing after they've tried everything else.
    - Winston Churchill

America is the only nation in history which has miraculously gone directly from barbarism to degeneration without the usual interval of civilization.
    - Georges Clemenceau

No one can be as calculatedly rude as the British, which amazes Americans, who do not understand studied insult and can only offer abuse as a substitute.
    - Paul Gallico

my current 3 fav quotes from non LOTR/film sources. enjoy, if you want analysis of them, well, Churchill was talking about USA's late intervention into the war, as for the others... thats up to you

Democracy is the strong veil that protects us all from the insane, abusive power of dictators, tyrants and such and unables them to throw chemical weapons and kill several thousands of innocents.

Democracy is the strongest weapon of freewill and access to modern tecnologies, and what enables you to be reading this at this very moment, using the net.

    Both me.

"I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come where the courage of men fails; where we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day... this day, we fight!"- Aragorn Elessar.

Edit: surely it should be either Aragorn, or Elessar Telcontar? just a Q! and even then the quote should be credited to either Tolkien, Jackson, Walsh, or Boyens depending on whether its from the books, or written as part of the film scripts? tBP

ok guys I don't want to start another political argument, but I'm afraid I'm gonna. Democracy isn't the ideal utopical stuff, I agree. But it's the best we got so far. Of course there must be a leader (tyrant in your views) to make decisions, in every organization/society/democracy, otherwise there would always be discussion after discussion after discussion... and things wouldn't just move on. The good thing about democracy is that ONE man can't rule alone and the pop has information and power enough to persuade, at least, that leader's actions. Have you at least looked at the alternatives! I am not taking you down guys. Opposition and incorformation is always needed. Some pression to get things better always got things better

Democracy is great, but one needs balance in democracy. And because one is "at war" with terrorism it is NO EXCUSE to behave like a dictator. So IMO, the "greatest" democracy in the world, that of the US, is useless. I personally like socialism better. Seems to work in Northern Europe.... -_-

True words are seldom spoken Sib. The only democracy i can digest is direct democracy Athens-style, and after that then, scandinavian social-democracy. Other than that, the workers commune is the nearest to ideal we've gotten, as exemplified by the kibbutzen (Eretz Yisrael) and his collectivas in Republican Spain during the Civil War!

True representative democracy neends on an imformed and politically active public (which ironically is most often seen in direct democracies), but if the public is not perfect i.e. they will not comform to an abstract idea (thats the reason communism failed, but thats a whole other story) then representative democracies fail.... In that sense that they do not provide man with LIBERTY, AND STIFFLE HIS SENSE OF BEING.

you're both right sib and boris. Generalized social-democracy in western-northern Europe is, IMO, better than the USA's democracy model, specially for the unfavoured ones. But don't forget USA is a young overpowered nation and that blinds one's actions. Remember yourselves being a kid in a fight, with all your friends beside you,and against a weaker oponent

I do sense, nevertheless, good intentions in most of their actions and I have hope that in the future they will correct their mistakes (the one that bothered me the most was that antiKyoto protocol decision Now there was a proof of dictatorship against the world consense in the matter )

I've got LOTS of quotes on my AIM profile- It Elite1789

So go to that and look- I have a sub profile that has tons of quotes I have accumulated from over the years...

Some faveslots are ones I kind of compiled myself after reading on Nap...)

"Before tomorrow evening, that army will be mine." Napoleon Bonaparte to his staff on the night of December 1, 1805, as he watched the Austro-Russian Allied army settle into its positions near Austerlitz…

"The idea that Prussia could take the field against me by herself," he said, "seems so ridiculous that it does not merit discussion."
Within three weeks in October of 1806, he brought the Prussians to their knees. Defeating the Prussian army at the battles of Jéna and Auerstädt, Napoleon captured 140,000 prisoners and left 25,000 dead or wounded. The might of the Prussian army had been entirely crushed.

When Alexander the First was thinking about what to do after the battle of Friedland, his brother Constantine said, "Sire, if you are considering fighting the Napoleon, you might as well give each soldier a gun and let him put a bullet in his head. The result will be the same."

"O xein angellein Lakedaimoniois hoti tede
    keimetha tois keinon rhemasi peithomenoi

And here are some of the funny ones I have accumulated:

The Key to victory is to use cheep tactics, unfair units and attack in overwhelming numbers at your enemy's weakest point.

Every Plan has a fatal weak point. Once you find it, swarm over it with your minions and bash the hell out of it.

"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it."

The fact that you've got "Replica" written down the side of your gun. And the fact that I've got "Desert Eagle point five O" written on the side of mine, should precipitate your balls into shrinking, along with your presence.

"The downside of being better than everyone else is that people tend to assume you're pretentious."

    Good times,
