RS II Legion Composition and Tracking

Inspired by the wonderful works from Apple http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=204635 and Century X http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=151875 for RS I Legions, I decided to combine the following information for Legions' composition in RS II.

Note: Everything provided here is just my personal likes and fits my style of playing. Consider it as an inspiration for your personal adjustments

    Republic Legion

A general composition of the Republican Legion could be the following:

    1 General
    8 Republican Cohorts
    4 Triarii
    4 Velite
    2 Equites

With one free slot for mercenaries, artillery or any unit that fits best the current situation.

    Named & Numbered Legion

A general composition of the Named and Numbered Legion could be the following:

    1 General
    1 First Cohort
    9 Cohorts
    4 Auxilia
    2 Archers
    2 Cavalry

With one free slot for mercenaries or any unit that fits best the current situation.

    Auxilia Field Legion

The Auxilia Field Legion is a support force for the Named Legion. Its composition could be:

    1 General
    12 Auxilia
    4 Archers
    2 Cavalry

With one free slot for mercenaries or any unit that fits best the current situation.

    Siege Auxilia Legion

A variation of the Auxilia Field Legion for use in sieges is the Siege Auxilia Legion. Its composition could be:

    1 General
    10 Auxilia
    4 Archers
    2 Cavalry
    2 Artillery/Siege units

With one free slot for mercenaries or any unit that fits best the current situation.

A full Striking Force could consist 4 stacks:

    1 Named Legion

    2 Auxilia Field Legions
    1 Siege Auxilia Legion

That force can carry on extended campaigns away from home, with the Auxilia Field Legions used to engage small enemy forces and replace any Named Legion’s thinned cohorts, the Siege Auxilia Legion carry on sieges and the Named Legion to fight the main battles and finish off the sieges.

I generally followed Century X’s system for the Legions and Army compositions.

I also remade the Excel file for organizing and keep tracking of your Legions which you can find attached for download here.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Please give all the credits to Century X and all the RSII team for their excellent and exceptional accomplishment.

    Best Regards to All

    1200 velites
    600 triari
    2100 hastati and principes.
    300 cavalry
then,my realistic and historical polibian legions in my campaign is:
    1 general unit
    3 velites units.
    8 hastati and principes units.
    2 triari units.
    2 cavalry units.

    Nice Thoas...

I'd be too lazy to keep all those numbers in mind in your excel file, but still nice work..
Anyways, funny but my legions have almost the same composure as yours...

This is not meant to be historical, as it should include the real number of the soldiers in each of these units while RTW uses a single number for everybody; he offered a visual help to those who want to stick the most nearer to a historical legion and go happy with it. I think he made a nice work. I use as well the HUGE setting for units size, maybe i should level to a smaller one. What's the best for you guys ?

I actually caught myself wondering last night "Where are those excel-guys, who make those spreadsheets, I could use one right about now". And now I read this, well done!

Suggestion tho; how about adding some room for "Special achivements" or something along that line, somewhere to sum up cities they've taken and or famous battles and such. Past commanders aswell would be awesome.

    Hmmm.

Pretty awesome, but I've always worked it out that one unit was a century, and one stack was a cohort. On Large unit sizes anyway.

Yep, Huge size works well only for germans and gauls...

Nice start but please also see this thread....
It explains how the maniples of each cohort (in game 3 cohorts) worked.
Each legion had 600 cavalrymen of 5000-5600 infantrymen.
Allies provided "legions" with more cavalry though.
That continued in the imperial legions with the addition of archers and field artilery.
    Nice work though!
TGC in order to continue its development seak one or more desicated scripters to put our campaign scripts mess to an order plus to create new events and create the finall missing factions recruitment system. In return TGC will give permision to those that will help to use its material stepe by step. The result will be a fully released TGC plus many mods that will benefit TGC's material.
Despite the mod is dead does not mean that anyone can use its material
    read this to avoid misunderstandings.

IWTE tool master and world txt one like this, needed inorder to release TGC 1.0 official to help TWC to survive.
Adding MARKA HORSES in your mod and create new varietions of them. Tutorial RESTORED.

Thank you all for the kind words.

As I said, it's just a suggestion and is inspired from Apple's and Century X's posts (see links in first post).

As for the spreadsheet, its basic future is that summarizes the battle results (wins/losses) and the casualties (inflicted/sustained), apart from that, anyone can add as many more columns with additional info he wants

    Cheers

    Very nice indeed,

I use a pretty similar format for my Legions, but most of the time usually 1 or 2 more Cohorts to round it to and even 10 for the Polybian error, in turn I go with less skirmishers, and perhaps a bit more Calvary, as the AI (Especially Carthage) loves to throw Light Missie Cavalry at me, so I need an ability to counter that. But this will defiantly be interesting to use come Marian Reforms time, that's for sure, so again nice work

    Very nice work, thank you!

Although the absence of the allied component from the pre-Marian legions leaves a lot of fun out of the game....
