Participated in the French Revolutionary Wars on both sides, the French 1792-1793 and the Allies (specifically, Prussia) 1793-1795. No known ambitions since the death of Charles Edward Stuart in 1788.

Infamous for their 'ungentlemanly tactics' and legendary (at least throughout North Africa and the Mideast) for their brutality. Participated in various local conflicts between the Mamluk lords.

Background: Formed from Swiss exiles that fled the French invasion and dismantlement of the old Swiss Confederacy. Many of them are veterans of countless battles, having served with first the Prussians and then the Austrians against Revolutionary France until the Treaty of Campo Formio forced Austria to release them from Imperial service, and they are known both for their ruthlessness and nerves of steel, having marched in formation through an artillery barrage at Valmy and only retreating under orders. They dream of re-establishing the Swiss Confederacy.

Background: Drawn primarily from the Don and Kuban Cossack Hosts, but also incorporating Cossacks from as far as Orenburg as well as Russian criminals and peasants with nowhere else to go, Pavlov's Cossacks have earned an unparalleled reputation for speed, recklessness and ferocity in the service of the Austrians, always first to charge (straight into the deepest enemy formations, no less) and often last to leave, frequently outmaneuvering and outmatching their French rivals in what even the French commanders themselves have grudgingly admitted to be 'somewhat fair combat'. They dream of extending the power of the Orthodox Church and, more importantly, their Motherland.

Background: A band of ex-pirates now loaning out their services to whoever will pay. Martinez's Mariners are known to make up what they drastically lack in firepower with speedy, maneuverable cutters and fire ships for suicide runs, and have performed superbly under both the French and the British in the Revolutionary Wars.
Are the mercs from 1796 still available, or do they leave as the year advances?
But I assume if we hire them a year after they appear, their term of service is reduced by a year?
