Thread: Explanation of Faction Symbols?

    Default Explanation of Faction Symbols?

Can someone please educate me on the faction symbols in RSII? i would like to know why they are what they are. I know some of the more obvious ones- Rome is an eagle with an SPQR (duh) and Sparta is a upside down V thingy (what is that called again?). but for the others, i would like to know.

Another question-do the faction colors have any historical meaning? to me, purple for Makedon is pretty strange....

The faction colours were picked in order to try and make it easy to identify which faction was which on the radar map.

Some of the factions changed colours quite a bit during the life of the beta. At least there are no fluro colours like in RTW BI.....

The inverted V symbol is the Greek L, which was the first letter of something significant to the Spartans.(The name of their people, or something.)
I have no idea if I'm correct or not.
I vaugely recall reading this somewhere, and I do not know the reliablity of said source.

EDIT: The name of the letter is Lambda, which may sound familar to somebody who has played half life(or studies physics, for that matter.)
Λ the uppercase, λ is the lowercase.

Macedon is purple because it was the color of royalty. As for the symbol on the Macedonian banners, that is the family crest of sorts for the Royal family. It is still in use today on the Macedonian flag, but now it is a red background I think.

another question-why is the best spartan hoplite shield a very creepy smiley face? i would have thought it would have been a Lambda, but another spartan hoplite has that....

Times were different back then. Men frolicked in the Olympics naked and prostitution wasn't necessarily illegal.

i read somewhere that while married women weren't allowed to see the olympics, young virgin girls were.

    Nice thread.

Wanted to ask whats the reason for seleucids having an elephant as symbol, wonder why they don't have this anchor. Thats their symbol on shields in battles and on banners on the campaign map.
Is the elephant a symbol of their royal family?

I think quite a few of them are based off of pieces of jewelery originating from each of the factions in question. E.g the Scythian and Arverni faction symbols.

I split off the discussion on Greek sexuality inot it's own thread as it was derailing the thread.
