Turn off the shadows (really helps). Also you may try to turn off additional graphic options.

The absolute best fix for this and any lag problems with BI or RTW is to increase the paging file. This is found under the hardware settings in the control panel. A setting of 8192 makes a world of difference.

Even with increasing the paging file setting, I still reboot every hour. The memory leak will over time make things laggy and more laggy. The paging file extends the playable time -- thats all.

Turning off one or two minor details (shadows or grass) really helps, especially if on the battle map your battles get over 6 or 7 or even 9 thousand soldiers. (This happens when you have a full stack city under siege by multiple armies, or in any battle with lots of horde armies.)

For the campaign map, I agree with the shadows thing - tho i keep my settings on default and the game works fine. I don't have to reboot every hour or so - maybe after 3 or 4 hours.
