Thread: Gloss files CTD my game?

Default Gloss files CTD my game?

Lt, I've been having the same irritating problem of CTDs occurring while loading up my second battle. I can play my campaign, start a battle, have a fine time, but the second I start a 2nd battle it CTDs. It doesn't matter which faction my army fights against, or in what order. I've played SPQR from it's earliest betas, and have never had this problem before.

I've tried just about everything by now. Clean installs, new drivers, new campaigns, lower settings, and the problem keeps occuring. However, I've noticed that there's definitely some patterns to it.

For starters, the problem begins ONLY after the marius reforms. This caused me to stop playing one campaign, since I thought the save game became corrupted, but it then occurred again in another.

I thought, then, that the problem was that the textures on one of the post marian units was causing the crash, but after singling out each available unit and throwing it into a few battles I realized that this was not the case. I did discover though that the CTD did not occur if I only attacked wth 1 unit. I could run a dozen battles where I attacked the guals or the germans with just archers, late cav, or spearman aux. HOWEVER, if I took all those units, lumped them into a stack, and then attacked, the CTD would occur as I loaded up the second battle.

After digging through a million forum posts, I came across one which you wrote that the high res gloss files that SPQR uses could be causing CTD by overloading a graphic card's video memory:

I think this may be what is causing my game to crash, especially considering that it doesn't happen when playing vanilla, BI, or RTR. Just SPQR. Is there anyway for me to fix this problem? Will 5.0 shrink the size of the gloss files for units? Should I try to swap new skins in for all the post Marian units?

Any help I can get would be relaly appreciated. I'm using a Radeon 9600 with 256 MB RAM, 2600+ Athlon, 1 gig of ram, if this helps.

Thats quite a full report there durango!

One thing that has come up is graphics cards getting hotter and overheating, could this be the case with you?
Lt fitted a better fan unit to his card and it stopped overheating.

Does your PC have temp sensors?
My ATI X800xt never goes above 30 degrees and runs fine, incase that helps

Yeah, LT thought that might be the problem, but I'm pretty sure it isn't. I play a lot of PC games at high settings without any problem. Also, I can play RTR and SPQR pre MArius just fine. Heck, I can even play BI for hours and I can really feel how much that game stresses out my system. The fact that the CTD is always during the loadup of the second battle is what makes me think its not just an overheating problem.

Durango there is nothing wrong with the mod. lol There cant be or we all would start seeing the pattern. I'm sure its something to do with your hardware. Try opening the window at night and let it get VERY cold in your Room. Then test out your theory again. To be honest it sounds like an heating issue. Are you in the USA or EU?

You video card should be fine for the Gloss file as there are only 2 units in SPQR that have them. lol And I doubt your using those units right after marius. I believe your system is overheating, most likely the Video card. Ify ou have the heat on and stock fan RTW and especially SPQR and other mods that use better graphics, your system can overheat. You have to be systematical.. play RTR after your SPQR crash and play RTR for a while in campaign until after reforms, fighting battles etc and see if you get a crash. You may have not crashed in RTW or RTR because of the time zone and your PC was cool. There are tons of variables in dealing with Hardware issues. Make sure you havbe the latest drivers. Have you defragged your system. Have you had any lockups or wierd PC behavior lately. Have your EVER reformatted your Hard drive.

System are meant to be reformatted every 6months to a year depending on use, no matter what DELL or MS says. lol Ask any computer specialist and see how often they reformat and reload their system software. :-)

Well LT, I just reformatted my computer. But get this, I forgot to backup my spqr saves. Haha. I'm starting a new campaign and if it doesn't work this time around then screw it, the gods have forsaken me.

I recommend human sacrifice in the form of an annoying baby sister, or perhaps a goat. That would obviously clear things up.
