I got very limited knowledge of military tactics of that era (or any era) but moving a unit or bunch of (foot) archers mid battle around the flanks to position them in the rear of the enemy sounds like science fiction, or something that is tactically unlikely to happen? (given standard set piece battle)

This tactic is'n exactly historical or accurate but it does a good job winning helpless battles or just winning them easier with less losses, you can do it or not, its up to you But for me this tactic works wonders

It is possible to do it, because after all you're fighting the AI. The only thing is you have to make sure the AI has all of it's heavier infantry engaged.

The risks are the AI moving one of it's cavalry units to attack your skirmish infantry and the risk to your own troops. It's guaranteed that your troops will suffer casualties from a rear attack to the enemy.

This is why I adopt a Single line formation, The enemy can never engage you fully, if he Engages you he will have all his troops engaged in one part of your Battle line, he cant spread out enough to engage your whole battle line or their own units will easily break, once the enemy engages you You will have lots of flank units free from action, I usually swing those into action, and Sometimes I Reserve A Separate detachment of units in the Rear of my battle line for outflanking/flank guarding duties, once the enemy is committed I Send the ranged units & Any free units behind the enemy, It wins un-win-able battles, trust me

Who wants to saw a new spectacle? This time - special spectacle only for troops, to raise morale. Hurah!

P.S. This was the default starting battle deployment when defending Halicarnasus.

Most of those rebel armies will probably be clubman and light spearman/swordsman .I am surprised to see Carthage take down the Gallaeci, are you helping them with money or they just managed to hold them on their own ?

Macedonia(FYROM) is Bulgarian. If you don't believe me, read a book.

I haven't touched the west actually, Carthage is simply rampaging.
They have so far, some 20-30 turns later, pushed across france, and are battering the Cimbri out. They now have european holdings, all the way up to the English channels, and all the way east to Massalia.
In short, I'm looking on in wonder, as Carthage take on the 3 remaining powers in european areas: The Greek Cities located at Scicly, the Romans in Italia and the Cimbri across the rest.

I figure that the reason the Galleci haven't been able to wipe out Carthage is that Rome actually backstabbed them and drove them to near extinction before their empire collapsed under Cimbri pressure.
Carthage took the liberty of retaking the southern provinces of Iberia, and then went berserk.

As for the rebel armies, the battle royal was done, and oddly enough, the Rebels won.
Rebels tend to become rather strong, if they are left alone for long enough. I had a battle somewhat north with them, at Olbia, and they actually had nothing, but elite troops across 3 stacks.

    Edit: here's an update:

rebel Armies are'n that simple/weak in RSII I Thought, in my roman campaign the free people of the north came with stacks of mixed light and strong heavy infantry/spearmen. But also alot of clubmen and light spearmen though

Another battle for the already proven General Decimus Papirius Crassus and his legion the 4th Flavia Felix Legion. This great battle pits him against the Macedonian King Hippostratus and his 3 generals. And like the last battle with this legion just as epic.

My most recent battle with Hannibal. Wish I had remembered to use Fraps during the battle itself, instead of near the end. And for some odd reason, these aren't coming out in their native resolution (1920x1080), but I suppose they're good enough.

Yeah. Surprisingly both Macedonian armies didn't have cavalry (with the exception of the 4 generals) and archers.

Well you know what they say: Officer jumps in first and goes out last. I salute you brave centurion.
