Havent been here in a long time and i'm just getting back into rome because of a series I just read and a lot has changed it seems. It appears SPQR is available to use the RS2 map and I was wondering if it was just the battle maps or the campaign map as well. might not be the right forum but there wasnt an answer on the SPQR forum

    Battle and Campaign map.

I never played it with the RS2 map, the old map just adds to the special SPQR feeling.

Default JAVELINS Re: Roma Surrectum Mansio, a place for friendly off topic talk

Had a question for you guys about Javelins that comes from a comment by a poster on another game board, the Brytenwalda forum of the Taleworlds forum (Mount&Blade Warband game):

    http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.p...,230144.0.html

The Brytenwalda mod is set in 636 AD British Isles and the mod does push use of javelins relatively more than bows (bows are much weaker than in the vanilla Warband game).

Tbh, I was not too familiar with the use of javelins in the Roman era until playing Roma Surrectum and seeing how prominent a role they play in various factions infantry. Obviously 636 British Isles is different from the setting of Roma Surrectum, but I figured you guys who are knowledgeable about history could adjust and comment accordingly. To synthesize the points that to me are controversial:

    1. the OP argues that, while pilums were designed to incapacitate shields, javelins in general should not be so effective at doing this.

Based on this he suggests as follows:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I think it'd be much more realistic if "javelins," 'horsemen javelins," and "wooden javelins," did not cause extra damage to shields, and on top of that, like throwing rocks or something of that nature they should not even stick into shields. Upon hitting a shield they should just vanish like a throwing rock. It becomes sort of silly to see soldiers walking around with their shield completely plastered in these tiny javelins.

However, Throwing Spears and Angons should remain as they are now.. throwing spears and angons are much heavier and much longer, and I'd imagine they'd have a reasonable chance of piercing a poplar shield. Besides that, soldiers only carry 1-2 agnons/throwing spears so it seems fair that they'd be better.

On top of that, all throwing weapons should probably be a fair bit slower in motion. All the javelins and darts in the game move way too fast. If you've ever thrown a javelin or seen a real javelin (not one of those Olympic "flight" javelins) be thrown, they don't move that fast. They are quite slow. I realize that the soldiers in brytenwalda would be quite adept javelin throwers, but nonetheless you really shouldn't be seeing these javelins move as fast as arrows. They are a throwing object, not an object shot from a bow.

    2. Other guys chime in to say things like "I agree. Javelins are overpowered." and

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Javelins not only should have much less distance, but be less deadly and damaging to shields.
They would have been the weapons of poor men, kind of like improved slings.
Next level up should be bows arrows.
Not sure they were even used much in Old England. The celts gave them up after the Roman invasion.

    3. Some other guys claim that the pilum was in fact a copy of the "Iberian Solifera"

To me, the mod is very difficult, but javelins in particular don't seem particularly overpowered. Appreciate any feedback you guys have so maybe I can convey it on to the dev.

I'd say let him get his feet wet with vanilla. It is tbh a bit more approachable for the new.
