I havent seen any movies on Alexander...
And I know it wasnt totally levies, there was a big section of professionals, mercenaries, and the levies
The persian army was mostly archer, who used to be supported by spearmen with wicker shields, along with a big contingent of cavalry, and other supporting arms and levies. Anthonius made a detailed post about Alexanders plans to copy that model.
I think most were mercenaries, but i could be wrong. I seem to remember that alot of them were people who had fled from greece for various reasons and then coalesced into mercenary units. The Persians would also have had a few of the greek cities in Asia Minor under their control before Alexanders invasion, so they may have been able to draw a few hoplites from those cities as well.
yes Ionia was the source for hoplites... but they were not as tough as those from the mainland
Is it only me (Likely) or does every time you strive and persevere in building a huge empire in this mod have all the pleasure ripped out of it by a quote from the genius of a man that is Carl Sagan? Let me show you his words.
Here at the top of the photo you will see the photo of the Earth that he refers to as a "pixel".The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

This quote haunts me everytime I think I have accomplished something.
