Well the fire service might be going on strike on bonfire night this year, so the whole country will go up in flames.

Bonfire night celebrates Guy Fawkes Night - in 1605, a Catholic plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament while James I addressed it was foiled, Fawkes was caught with the gunpowder kegs and burnt at the stake along with his co-conspirators. Their aim was to remove James I a Protestant and replace him with a Catholic monarch.

Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire night normally has a "guy" burnt on a bonfire in remembrance of this, though I suspect it's mainly used to let off a lot of fireworks now.

Yeh nobody at uni knows what im talking about when i talk about bonfire night/guy fawkes night since i suppose its only celebrated in the uk . Was guy actually burnt at the stake? I thought he was hung drawn and quartered- it seems a bit overkill to burn him as well- he might not be dead yet, so we'll just put him on this fire to be sure.

Oh, I kind of assumed you were at Uni in the UK, my mistake I guess.

I don't know if he was burnt at the stake, I guess I assumed so because of the burning of the guy but the usual was hung, drawn and quartered so maybe that's what happened - we can be sure he gave up the names of the conspirators after some rather nasty persuasion - I have to admit I read enough on wiki to get the date no more, I knew it was 16 something just wasn't exactly sure

    Apparently:

They were to be "put to death halfway between heaven and earth as unworthy of both". Their genitals would be cut off and burnt before their eyes, and their bowels and hearts removed. They would then be decapitated, and the dismembered parts of their bodies displayed so that they might become "prey for the fowls of the air".

Well he would have been tortured first as well to get the confession, and they would have been hanged first until almost dead- unlesss they break their neck when they do that and then the bad things start to happen.

I am at uni in the uk- Nottingham if you want to be precise, its just that most of the students are from abroad and whatnot in my course- uk students tend to gravitate more towards the social sciences it seems.
