So, is there any way to install Broken Crescent on a Steam version of MTW II?
So, is there any way to install Broken Crescent on a Steam version of MTW II?
Please, familiarize yourself with Sticky: Steam users and Sticky: instructions for Steam and Windows 7 RC.
Nope, did not work. I guess, the problem is, I have Windows Vista on a 64 bit machine.
I'm sorry, but I can't help you. I don't know how Steam works.
Maybe ask on general M2TW tech help forum? There should be some info about how to install mods with Steam and on Vista 64.
OK, got it to work. In the case of W-Vista 64, the key should be placed in
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\Mods\Unofficial\0001Broken_Crescent"
Not in
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\Mods\Unofficial\0001Broken_Crescent"
Once, the above is fixed, it seems to work.
LOL, still no "cookie"...
I got the campaign to launch and also managed to get the missing tool-tips (strat-map level and battle-level) in. However, BC goes CTD before every other battle...
No issues like that with the vanilla, retro-fit or any of the kingdom expansion battles.

Okay, but can you make them clearer, Dagda? Because I can't. It would be good if you could write a simple guide for Steam users. I'm no a Steam user.

Question: should I UNPACK the main MTW2 before installing BC? I have not touched the pack files from the original install.
My problem seems to be that after installing BC 2.02, I still have a lot of unit-related files missing. This causes CTD before battles that involve the respective units.
No, you shouldn't unpack M2TW.
About those unit related files - what exactly are you referring to?
The missing file list in the spoiler here:

Hmm, I looked into those files posted here and they have set kingdoms.exe as the launch-exe. This shouldn't work, because BC2 uses medieval2.exe.
Maybe this is the source of your problems.
If it comes to log entries, most of them are garbage which everyone gets. However, those entries referring to vanilla sounds, for instance, shouldn't be there. Maybe this is a clue...
EDIT:
Ahah! I think I got it!
Here's what: your installation of BC uses kingdoms.exe. This means that there are game-play features activated that don't exist in M2TW. BC2 is for M2TW, not Kingdoms, thus BC2 doesn't use Kingdoms features.
Therefore there are CTDs when you attack Antioch, and not surrounding towns - Antioch has better defences which contain also hot oil, which is one of Kingdoms features, and BC2 lacks proper files to support that oil defences. That's why you are getting that CTD - BC just can't support a battle with oil defenses.
This is my assumption and I may be wrong, though.

The kingdoms.exe bit I got from the first link you originally provided to me:
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=141992
The BC.reg that nicolaswille has posted there has a clear entry:
"GameExe"="kingdoms.exe"
I'll see if my problems go away after I switch to medieval2.exe.
I changed the reg-key GameExe entry to medieval2.exe and the game would CTD right on the launch... So, no luck there. With kingdoms.exe, it at least lets me get into a campaign and even fight a battle or two as long as I do not attach Antioch.
This leads me to question: has anyone really been successful installing this mod for Steam run on Windows Vista?
