He was Prince of Beijing and defeated the armies of his nephew on several occasions, thus becoming emperor and moving the Capital from Nanjing to Beijing. In his reign there were 6 Mongolian campaigns of which one was a defeat (lead by his generals), 3 were victories (led by himself), and 2 had no fighting as the Mongols retreated (led by himself). Later on he ordered an invasion of Vietnam in which he was successful but would later become a failure for his future heirs.
