Ow ow ow, I've seen him before!
It's John de Courcy, an ambitious Norman who thought it was easier to get forgiveness than permission, so on his own initiative he invaded Ireland with a small army and kicked ass, only to fall out of favor with the King. Norman Kings were big on personal initiative, but not without royal approval
The King sent a guy after him, a real teacher's pet named Hugh de Lacy, who managed to defeat John.
He was imprisoned and was only released when he promised to go on a pilgrimage.
He died obscure and poor in, errr, the 1220's or thereabouts iirc.

Yes. John de Courcy, the rouge Norman who set up his own Kingdom in Ireland and even minted his own coinage - King Henry II didn't even notice for a few years. He's the guy they invented the word; 'bold' for. Icing on the cake was that after he patched things up with Henry, he was included in the expedition sent to remove Hugh de Lacy after he'd fallen out of favour.

I can't rep Visna atm, could someone get that for me please? Thx.

Should I post a hint, it really isn't that hard of a guess though.

    Random guess: Fenton Aylmer.
