    A further clue, he served in the American army, but gained fame fighting for Mexico.

    John O'Reily of the San Patricios? I can't remember if Winfield Scott had him executed or not.

    Correct!

    Reilly escaped execution as he deserted the US army before the war started, but he was whipped and forced to do a few years of hard labor. Supposedly he was also forced to watch as his men were hanged.

    Here's the scene from the film about him.



    Give them blizzards refers to the 'blizzards' of grapeshot they fired upon US troops attempting to storm their positions in previous battles.

    Eventually he returned to Mexico after his hard labor and was received as a hero and given land and a pension by the Mexican government. However, contrary to the uplifting ending to the film, love did not conquer all and it seems he died an alcoholic, his spirit utterly broken by the loss of his men.
