    He was not prime minister nor president but "Chef de l'Etat" which means head of state.
    He abolished the Republic which he blamed for the 1940 collapse and took advantage of the german occupation to build a nationalistic bigot "(puppet)state".

    Some, even nowadays, still say that he was just an old man used as a figure head for real facists like Laval or Darnand to rule in his stead but the truth is that Petain came from a traditionnalist ultracatholic and antisemitic background that was quite common among old officers.

    He was very popular for Verdun and taking care of his men's lives unlike many other clueless and heartless generals but History is merciless regarding is role during the occupation; he did not only follow the german's orders but did more than what was asked of him because he shared some of the nazi "values" such as frenetic antisemitism, antiliberalism and anticommunism.
